Free speech advocates have raised alarms over the possibility of a new so-called "Fairness Doctrine" that would regulate speech over the radio airwaves, and now one media leader has suggested a litmus test is needed to protect First Amendment rights from President Obama and his appointees.

That means less consolidation of media in the hands of so few. It means more owners of TV and radio stations.
If you think the mainstream media is biased toward liberals, then why wuldn't you consider splitting up the five or so enormous media conglomerates that control mainstream media by owning several TV and radio stations and newspapers a good thing? After all, it would increase the number of viewpoints expressed, and break up that so-called liberal monopoly on the media.
Can you explain to me how this will "censor Rush Limbaugh and all his conservative counterparts"? -

Once again the party of that claims to defend the rights of all is taking rights away from us again. The only good thing that seems to be happening, at least in my corner of the world, the DNC strangle hold seems to be weakening. Just like communism's empty promises, I think people are realizing the empty promises of Obama and the left.

Agree about the rush thing red. In my 'corner of the world' it would seem that the intellectual thrust of Team 0Bama thought that they could pick on Rush because he would be seen as an archaic, verbose and intellectually bankrupt rube and it would be easy to use their preconceived ideas about him as a way of making Rush a universal bogeyman, or fall guy, for all things perceived as bad in the media about Universe 0Bama; as an example; the precipitous fall of the DOW could be penned on Rush because he said he wanted 0Bama to fail, etc ,etc, etc. (If the fall of the DOW is due to Rush's comment, then Mr Rush is one very, very, powerful 'entertainer'.)

To a degree, this simplistic approach has worked well in the camp of the 'devoted 0Bama Bolsheviks' yet in another way it has failed miserably. because a lot about what 0Bama meant by ''Change You Can Believe In' is finally coming to light to the public in general, and that in itself is very dangerous to Team Messiah.-

I wonder who the liberals and the democrats will elect as their poster person to hate now that Bush is out of office.
Now we have our answer.
Obama hates Limbaugh so the media, his little trained minions like Durbin will attach Limbaugh. The drive by media already hate Limbaugh so Obama's army has their new poster person of hate and are starting to attack.
They will use words like diversity to make is sound all fair, caring, inclusive, warm and fuzzy so the american people will not think a thing about the first step toward Durbin's gestapo start to stopping all free speech.

This is not an issue between republicans and democrats or liberals and conservatives.
The American people VS the Federal Government. Once this is allowed it will be easy for them to shut up the citizens of this country. -

Sure it is. If this passes it will be bad for all americans. Once the government gets that much control it's only a matter of time until it effects us directly. They get their hands on anything they ruin it, tax it, control it. And control is what this is all about.

also remember the Fairness Doctrine cuts both ways....., The Fairness Dictrine passed I believe in 1949 is for a time that no longer exists. The infancy of TV, limited stations, limited programming, limited news sources. Rush, Hannity, Ingraham, Levin will keep the heat up on this for a long time.

Senator Durbin, along with 86 other senators, voted to keep the Fairness Doctrine in the grave. All Durbin's amendment, which passed on a party-line vote 57-41, would do is clarify that the FCC could continue carrying out its core mission -- as enshrined in the Communications Act of 1934 (http://www.fcc.gov/Reports/1934new.pdf) -- to promote competition, localism and diversity in the media.
There's no legal way for the FCC to use ownership rules or localism requirements to censor content. In theory, the agency could ask broadcasters to hold community events and get feedback from their listeners in exchange for their lucrative licenses to use the public airwaves.
All the rest is an absurd fantasy completely divorced from reality and history, which shows broadcast licenses have been revoked in only the most extreme and rare circumstances. (Like a KKK-run TV station in Mississippi in 1969.) -

L. Brent Bozell III of the Media Research Center - who publicly demanded that the new FCC chief publicly disavow use of the "frightening new governmental censorship powers" allegedly handed to him by Senator Durbin - was for the "Durbin Doctrine" before he was against it.

In fact, Bozell and his colleagues not only have encouraged the FCC to keep an eye out for smut, but they've long opposed runaway media consolidation and supported more local ownership.

There is no chance the Fairness Doctrine will come back. There's no bill to reinstate it in Congress, no proceeding before the FCC that would resurrect it, and no public interest advocates are campaigning for it. President Barack Obama has unequivocally and repeatedly stated his opposition to its return.

Broadcasting especially AM radio is doing fine just like it is so why change anything even the mainstream leftist media. It really is amazing what Rush did for AM radio it was a total void until Rush came along. He and others of talk radio revived a whole industry now liberal, progressive, democrats want to destroy it because they haven't' been able to compete in that arena. They, the lpd's, are always trying to save jobs, I wonder how many jobs would be lost in this business sector if the Durbin Doctrine or one of it's clones are ever passed into law?

The liberals better be very careful here. I don't think they understand what kind of trouble this can create. This could trigger a civil war. The liberals think they can sneak a socialist society right under our noses w/no consequences. I don't believe they will be able to do it w/out a war.
