It's my opinion that every home in America, and the whole world, should have some sort of wind turbine and solar panels. I understand that this is expensive but, as seen in this article, there are some very inexpensive solutions. Bicycle parts and car alternators is something I saw in the article. While not everybody would, or should, be able to go completely off grid the impact would be huge.

That is what we are doing. Help the working man build his own safe wind turbine. Never build a wind turbine with PVC or wood. I have seen this to many times and it is not safe. We sale every part you need to build your own. http://re-new-it.com
