This is truly a sad story. I am usually opposed to abortion. All life should be treated as sacred. It is for that reason that I oppose the death penalty. That said, a nine year old girl would have had immense difficulty carrying twins to term. Most likely she would have died from complications of her pregnancy.

The problem I have is that the church tosses aside the mother and doctors who were saving one life while losing two others. The girl will suffer emotional scars as is. Public excommunication in Brazil does nothing but cast a pall of shame over the family. The Vatican and its surrogates handled this matter very badly. For them to claim that the father is not excommunicated even though he raped the girl, but the mother is, is unconscionable. -

FTA: "He also said the accused stepfather would not be expelled from the church. Although the man allegedly committed "a heinous crime ... the abortion - the elimination of an innocent life - was more serious".

What of the innocence that was stolen from the 9 year old little girl? I understand the church's position on abortion and the ex-communications, but to exclude the father (who murdered the innocence of a child, I feel is wrong. I disagree with the Church's decision to excommunicate the 9 year old. She really didn't have the maturity to understand the decision that her parents and doctors were making for her. What a shameful, sick world we live in.-
