Obama to Reverse Bush Stem Cell Policy »
Posted By Eagle_Eye 8 months ago in Science & TechnologyWASHINGTON (March 8) – President Barack Obama's announcement Monday that he is overturning his predecessor's policies toward embryonic stem cells also will include a broad declaration that science — not political ideology — would guide his administration.
Obama planned to reverse President George W. Bush's limits on federally funded stem cell research through the National Institutes of Health and to put in place safeguards through the Office of Science and Technology Policy so that science is protected from political interference. The moves would fulfill a campaign promise.

FTA: "The long-promised move will allow a rush of research aimed at one day better treating, if not curing, ailments from diabetes to paralysis — research that has drawn broad support, including from notables such as Nancy Reagan, widow of the late Republican President Ronald Reagan, and the late Christopher Reeve.
Reply
The move also will highlight divisions within the Republican Party, now in the minority and lacking votes in Congress to stop Obama.
The proposed changes, which Obama planned to sign around noon Monday, do not fund creation of new lines, nor specify which existing lines can be used. They mean that scientists who until now have had to rely on private donations to work with these newer stem cell lines can apply for government money for the research, just like they do for studies of gene therapy or other treatment approaches."
I don't understand why the GOP is against finding a cure for people with such life threatening and disabling diseases and handicaps, I guess they think that we are "expendable" and not worth the effort. -

Goppy, you are for taking questions of morality out of decisions of government funding?
Reply
I happen to be for stem cell research. However, I know that the way to President Bush's decision was one whole hell of a lot deeper than you apparently are, given your nonsensically partisan blandishment of "mind numbingly incompetent, ideological drones". I respected his decision and his way to it. I do not respect utterances like the one you just made.

Good. This one of the things I voted for when I cast my vote for Obama this last November.

I know the stem-call issue has many pro-lifers screaming "murder," but the facts are that the stem-cells come from embryos (actually, zygotes, but I digress) to be used for in-vitro fertilization. If these are not used for stem-cell research, chances are 99.9% that these will be destroyed anyway. Ironically, in-vitro fertilization itself is NEVER criticized by these people, even though most of the remaining embryos are discarded after a pregnancy has been accomplished.
The only difference is that these embryos, which would have normally been discarded, will now be used for a life saving purpose. Perhaps a cure for Alzheimer's can be found (even Nancy Reagan supports stem-call research....and for obvious reasons...). Or Parkinson's (re: Michael J. Fox). In fact, I don't find a negative here.
And to those pro-lifers who have a moral issue with this, let me ask you: How many "snowflake babies" do know of?-

Excellent Point scott, they don't scream murder when the embryos are thrown away, but use
them for science and to help living breathing human beings then it's murder.
These embryos are nothing more than tissue mass, there is no heart, no brain, no body, just a mass of tissue.

One can only hope. It looks like the Justice Dept. is geared to stop harassing the medical marijuana growers and dispensaries. That's a start. But in my view, marijuana should be taxed and regulated the same as liquor (complete with the prohibition for those under 21). It is much less harmful than alcohol. And honest to God, I'd much rather be on the road with a pot smoker than with someone who has had even 1 drink!

Glad to see that Obama is ignoring the important issues such as, economy, markets, banks, jobs and concentrating on the fake global warming scare, Rush Limbaugh, and stem cell stuff! You go Obama, I'm sure all the important issues such as our economy will just clear up on their own. So, what's the buzz for today on Rush? Oh, and who do you think will win the American idol contest.

"ignoring the important issues" I guess helping terminal, paralyzed, sick people isn't an important issue, maybe not to you but to many Americans, getting their lives back will bring them back to the work force thus alleviating the medical cost and taxpayer Social Security Disability compensation. But I see that isn't important to you, well at least we know where you stand.

As for Limbaugh, I hope Obama hounds the a$$hole until he implodes in the massive fat pusstules that he is composed of. What a despicable and hateful person. It is beyond me why any caring and thinking human being would allow Limbaugh to formulate ONE opinion or position for them. I THINK FOR MYSELF...unlike you and your GOP ilk!

This president as a senator supported the gruesome practices of partial birth abortion. Where a viable baby is basically killed in the womb and then cut up and removed. You'll neg me but that's basically what is done. It's usually done as a form of late term birth control and not a life saving procedure for the mother as many try to claim. The stresses on the woman are greater than if you would deliver the child early.
Reply
So that being said, if he has no problem living with the idea that doing a late term abortion is fine, he clearly has no problems with using the remains of that child for a profitable industry. That's what we're talking about, profits from the patents universities can earn. Or did you actually think all of that research is for the betterment of mankind? We're talking about a Chicago politician. It's always about profits.-

Obama did not support partial birth abortion. Matter of fact, had you not limited your source of knowledge to right wing propagandists, you would know that there was one reason and one reason only that democrats voted against the ban. The mother’s health and life were not considered in the bill. Knowing that their follower drones wouldn't look further to see why anyone voted against banning partial birth abortion, the CONS refused to add that in the bill, and went on a propaganda spree. And here you are, stepping up to the plate and showing the world you are easily manipulated. tsk tsk tsk.

Teagan, you cons supported the "gruesome practices" of full scale war including the shooting and daisy cutter bombing (aka incineration) of who know how many babies and you were more than happy to deny health insurance to millions of innocent children based on the self-serving and reprehensible belief that to protect children that are here already is "socialism." You have NO leg to stand on whatsoever. You're NOT believable at all. ;-(

"I think it's entirely appropriate for states to restrict or even prohibit late-term abortions as long as there is a strict, well-defined exception for the health of the mother. Now, I don't think that "mental distress" qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term. Otherwise, as long as there is such a medical exception in place, I think we can prohibit late-term abortions."

President Barack Obama
The embyos in question are not viable fetuses and not are the subject to abortions. They are frozen in fertility clinics and will be destroyed anyway. (How does God feel about these clinics destroying the embryos?)
Clearly you are trying to denigrate not only the President but also the majority in this country. No aborted fetus should be used in research unless the parents give written approval.

Look at Obama and all his little peabrain democrat supporters. They just sit around not paying attention to what's going on and coming at us, head-on, like a freight train. Total economic meltdown and perhaps a depression that will make 1929 look like some kind of birthday party. If the great Obama doesn't get this economy turned around, AND SOON, we are totally screwed. So, lets concentrate on stem cells and Rush Limbaugh instead. Let's pretend Obama is doing a great job of fixing the economy. Just look at the DOW....it's been nose diving ever since Obama came to office, with no end in site. Yep, it's looking just great. So, lets not worry about the economy, lets worry about what Rush is spewing today. Lets support Obama in his baby murdering, lets spend all our time and energy on anything and everything but the economy and the financial well being of our nation.

Perhaps the Administration can do multiple tasks simultaneously?
Reply
Perhaps funding stem cell research IS a component of the spending package and hence related to the economy?
Perhaps the view of the previous administration that the beliefs of a few fundamentalists are more important for the nation than a strong science policy in general (not just stem cell research) has place the U.S.A. at an eight year disadvantage with respect to other economic powers that have developed their scientific enterprises? -

You seem to be focused on what Limbaugh says or what you think others are saying about him more than anyone else. This article has nothing to do with that. Why do you keep bringing it up?

As far as the "Total economic meltdown and perhaps a depression that will make 1929 look like some kind of birthday party", are you suggesting this is something that Obama has done in his 6 weeks in office? I may not agree with his approach to solving the problem, but it would be hard to attribute the cause of the problem to Obama.
You didn't seem to be concerned about the DOW going in the tank for the last few years, did you?

No, our government should do--and spend--nothing to stem the current economic meltdown.
Reply
Oh, maybe give the rich some more tax breaks. And just float a little money out there, which should be sufficient to encourage the required spending.
Invest in an ad campaign that would encourage people to "Buy Something--Today!"
Doesn't matter if the economic infrastructure--banks, insurance companies, big corporations that employ thousands of people--crashes.
Sooner or later the market will correct itself. We just have be patient and wait.
Because the way to pump money into the system so people can start to spend is to not pump any money into it at all.
Or maybe just....$1.20. (While giving the rich tax breaks.) -

At one time, Embryonic Stem Cells was superior to other types of stem cell research.
But since Bush stopped federal funding for Embryonic Stem Cell research in 2006, other types of stem cells along with cord blood, have excelled within modern science to do amazing things.
Researchers at Harvard Medical School say adult stem cells may eliminate the need for embryonic ones.
At the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, a man with a rare, potentially fatal skin disorder that was so severe that he could no longer eat, is now symptom-free after receiving a transplant of his own adult stem cells.
Forbes Magazine provided additional confirmation that adult stem cell research is far more successful that embryonic stem cell experimentation
Diane Irving, Ph.D., a former professor of biology at Georgetown University and former biochemist with the National Cancer Institute, said, "I have argued that adult stem cells are better because they are closer to the stage of differentiation than embryonic or fetal cells - therefore they do not have as long a distance to travel differentiation-wise as the younger cells. Therefore there is far less of a chance for genetic errors to be accumulated in the implanted cells and less side effects for the patient to deal with."
Besides, why is Obama bringing up yet another federally funded need when we have a serious crisis money crisis on our hands?
Seriously Obama? Pay attention to the crisis at hand that is causing the biggest concern already. The stock market. You may be ignoring it, but it is not ignoring you.-

Thanks for the breakdown, but it misses the larger point. As I said, under Bush's ban, if a university received ANY federal money for research, it could not share facilities, equipment, or data with another of their labs that was doing embryonic stem cell research. If for that reason alone, lifting the ban is a good thing.

And that is just the beginning.....stop limiting science and research, for some one who is fair and balanced you are way off balance

America is moving forward. We were left in a financial bind by Bush, but we are making the right steps now.
Obama made a very good case for lifting the ban in his speech today. He said that research will be "responsible" and it will not be used to experiment in areas like cloning.-

He also said "include a broad declaration that science — not political ideology — would guide his administration." so I am hoping that pretty soon he will apply science to Cannabis and take away the political ideology of it being a bad drug.
