Watchmen – The Movie Event of the Year Thus Far »
Posted By frnknglsh 8 months, 3 weeks ago in Arts & EntertainmentAmong this past Tuesday's video releases was Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic. This video takes the graphic novel and brings it to life using limited motion, sound and music, and voice. Not your typical animation, the visuals bring to mind a comic page that is being repeated but moved just slightly, with the movement at times being choppy and awkward. The artwork itself is outstanding, but the motion seems to almost take away from it. For viewers who are used to smooth, realistic, life-like animation, this could be a definite turn-off. It is reminiscent of cartoons from the 60's and 70's, and especially with the animation boom over the last few years, this nostalgia trip is not necessarily visually pleasing. One facet I did like was how the ink blots on Rorshach's mask changed. The story is extremely close to the original graphic novel, and as it is comprehensive rather than an abridgment, the video runs over five hours in length. However, it is broken up into chapters, so the viewer can easily watch it in segments. All of the voice work was provided by actor Tom Stechschulte, and this is both good and bad. On the male characters, he did an excellent job, capturing the essence of both the character and the story. On the female characters however, it was a bit awkward. It is one thing to listen to an audio book with one male reader who has to voice a female character, but to watch that character on the screen but hear a definite male voice can be a bit disconcerting. If you can get past these issues, and focus on the story, or if you are already a fan and snap up any chance to see or read anything Watchmen, then at least rent this video. If you purchase the video, you will get “movie money” worth $7.50 towards the price of a ticket to see Watchmen in theaters.
