Posted By engineer 8 months, 3 weeks ago in Political News

President Barack Obama enjoys widespread backing from a frightened American public for his ambitious, front-loaded agenda, a new poll indicates.

He is more popular than ever, Americans are hopeful about his leadership, and opposition Republicans are getting drubbed in public opinion, the new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll suggests.

WOW, NBC you don't say...Would that be the same NBC that's TOTALLY in the tank for Obummer, so wouldn't that say this poll is mostly SKEWED in favor of Obummer?

What I find interesting is the lack of any in-depth analysis. The reality is that President Obama's approval rating of 60% here at the outset of his presidency is almost exactly the same as Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. It is actually about 10 points lower than Jimmy Carter. And it is only slightly higher than Bill Clinton and both George H.W. and George W. Bush. It isn't really all that remarkable for a new president.

Go do the research and you'll see the same thing. Remarkable that the news article does nothing to put this into context.

--What would you know about "in-depth analysis"? His ratings alone are unremarkable because he's still in his "honeymoon" phase. This is the point where it's too early to render a meaningful judgement so many Presidents at this point will still be fairly popular. As esoosbobnar suggests below, what's remarkable is that Obama is dealing with a helluva mess at the same point in his Presidency where few (if any) of the other Presidents you mentioned had to deal with such a crisis. What were any of those other Presidents facing at this point in their administration that's comparable to the hellhole Obama has to dig us out of. Exactly...There's your depth right there, SOTM. Any questions?

True, his popularity is very much in line with other presidents at this point in their terms. However, the problems he's facing are much steeper than other presidents. I believe that's why the article feels his enduring popularity is notable.

As for NBC being in the tank for Obama, didn't seem that way when they were promoting the Santelli rant non-stop :)

In my opinion, so far he's done an outstanding job -- especially considering the hand he's been dealt.

Heh...I can't help but laugh at the conservatives who refuse to believe any poll showing favorable ratings for Obama, but the first time a poll is released showing unfavorable numbers, they'll be all over it, squawking about this is "proof" he's a lousy president and should never have been elected.

Hypocrisy is an amazing thing. 8D

All I got to say is that Obama has 4 years to straighten this mess out. I hope that in his attempt he doesnt make it worse. I wish the President and the rest of America the best of luck getting out of these trying times we face.

It is interesting that so many are willing to work so hard to try and suggest that President Obama's popularity rating is something dramatic or interesting or worthy of adulation.

The facts demonstrate that his popularity rating is "average" for this point in his administration comparable to presidents from JFK forward.

To those who suggest that he is facing circumstances that somehow make him unique in comparison...please go back and read your history.

To those who suggest it is too early to judge what his popularity will be throughout his tenure...no kidding. The point however is that the Obama media apologists have been trying to make a big deal about how his popularity rating is noteworthy. It is only noteworthy in how average it actually is.
