Brazil leader takes regional clout to White House
RIO DE JANEIRO -- His meet and greet with the U.S. president was bumped to Saturday, and when the White House announced his official visit, they misspelled his name.
But when Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva becomes the first Latin American leader to sit down with President Barack Obama this weekend, he brings undisputed clout.
Silva runs the world's fifth-most-populous nation and ninth-largest economy and has close ties with leaders across the political spectrum. He's been asked to lobby Obama for free trade on behalf of conservatives in Colombia and for dropping the U.S. embargo against communist Cuba. Even Hugo Chavez has asked Silva to carry an olive branch to the new administration.
DVD's AGAIN?-

so, who just offended Lula?
you simply have no idea about brasilians, how they use their names or their attitudes.
btw, Lula was NOT offended by the quote marks around his name. and you can't find me a statement from him or his aides that say he was, can you? (and if some writer from the American Thinker -whatever that is - tries to infer it, it doesn't make it true)
and if that wasn't enough...
Lula's Minister of Strategic Affairs, Roberto Mangabeira Unger, was Obama's professor at Harvard. In a recent interview, Unger said that he regards Obama as a friend and respects what the calls his moral and intellectual qualities.
SO...time to put on your little helmet and get in the little yellow bus where you belong.

Via Foreign Policy, wondering if anyone’s told The One yet that the State Department has an office of protocol for this sort of thing. Maybe he knows and just assumes that if they can’t even do translations anymore, they can’t be trusted with something like this. Or maybe, as with Treasury, he simply forgot to staff the office.
When you’re the world’s biggest celebrity, you don’t have to fret over diplomatic niceties. -

it's about protocol, it's about statesmanship, it's about allies, it's about repairing the TERRIBLE IMAGE of America , and restoring the prestige the George Bush supposedly destroyed. What we see here is a pattern. A pattern first with the Brits, the Russians (Hillary should have known better) and now the Brazilians. Apparently the State Department can not even translate properly, and the Obama team misspells the Brazilian Presidents name. Reflects well on America and the new Administration doesn't it. He is a buffoon in over his head. He lacks leadership, experience and most of all JUDGEMENT. BTW did you here even more of his appointees ran into problems this week.

They've snubbed a lot of leaders. You guys (Republicans)were all upset about France of all countries. Don't preach to me. One of your Congressmen or Senators as late as just yesterday claimed Obama was calling for the "France-ification" of America. You guys are really funny, BTW klarissa, talk to any tanker truck drivers lately. LMAO!

If it were the left's poster boy of hate, dare I say the name of George W. Bush, the cries of moron and stupid would be heard on propeller.
In addition there would be the nasty filth typical on the Huffington Post, Media Matters as well as negative coverage in the drive by media with David Letterman throwing some venom with his top 10 list .
Jovial said This is news, good greif!
Yes it is news.
The most powerful man in the world hasn't a clue as to protocol. With each passing day his inexperienced is becoming more and more evident.
Is he so arrogant he would NEVER ask about protocol, or so clueless he doesn't realize it's been disregarded?
The Presidential Candidate touted as the Messiah, the man with world's most brilliant mind, the revolutionary of change, hope, the man that can solve every problem for EVERYONE in America AND pay your mortgage too, seems to be clueless on Presidential protocol.
What any American President does or doesn't do reflects upon us as a nation. What does that say for our nation with Obama in Office?

he superheroes I always found hard to keep track of were the ones who kept relaunching themselves. I mean, Batman’s been Batman for 70 years and Spider-Man’s been Spider-Man for the best part of 50. But I’m thinking of chaps like Ant-Man. Very small, as one might expect. Then he became Giant-Man. Then he became Yellowjacket (his girlfriend was the Wasp). Then he became Goliath. I’ve lost track of him since then. But, thanks to my usual 20-second exhaustive research, I see he was relaunched only a month ago, this time as the Wasp. Hang on, I thought the Wasp was his chick? Has he had a sex-change? Hey, why not? For a while he was both Giant-Man and Yellowjacket, playing a kind of schizoid double-hero with each superpower emphasizing a different side of his identity.
Anyway, that’s how I feel about the endlessly morphing supergovernment hero battling the planet-swallowing economic crisis. Back in September, we were told to put our faith in Bailoutman. Then in January, Bailoutman went to his tailor, had the long underwear redesigned, and relaunched himself as Mister Stimulus. A few weeks later the Obama crowd noticed that “stimulus,” like “bailout,” had become a cheap punch line, and decided the approved term was “recovery.” So Captain Recovery swung into action. -

I know Obama's got bigger things to worry about, but there is a whole office of protocol that's supposed to take care of these things. If they can put together a Stevie Wonder concert, they should be able to arrange White House visits from the world's most important leaders with a little more class than this
That's the problem!
They are using the same team who plans concerts to arrange the meetings with foreign leaders!
This White House is operating more like Animal House-

In deference to the White House, they had a tough choice to make. Misspell a name or let the fish monger send the Brazilian president a dead fish.

Not so...it appears the only one offended in Britain or Brazil or the US is the press. Well not the real press. I have cruised several stories by "quality" news sources and have found nothing that shows a snub. I have seen a summary of what they may talk about .... now that is important. Why not post something that might mean something...

in fact, Obama's name recognition is so strong in Brasil that six Brasilian politicians have actually changed their names to, you guessed it, Barack Obama. some changed it legally. some just used it as a nickname (in Brasil, if you're running for office you can use either your given name or your nickname on the ballot).
putting "lula" in quotes won't offend anyone. lula's pretty cool. he likes Obama, and said Obama's election was an extraordinary event that recognized the true meaning of democracy. so, this won't bother him at all. and at least it shows that Obama understands how nicknames work in brasil, which is much different than how they work in America (as mentioned above)
so...
this story is just more bullsh*t.-

I'd think I know enough to try to get names right on a 6 year old's ice cream party invitations, much less an invite to meet and greet the President of the United States. It make the rest a bit easier and makes you seem more 'presidential', the next thing I'd do is have my aides write up a few index cards and can the teleprompter. Pssst Mr' President, his last name is ************ and Hola has nothing to do with surfs up!

in fact...
pc25 understands int'l diplomacy to such a degree that he obviously didn't know that Obama and Lula have eagerly wanted to meet face to face, that the Obama Administration has called this meeting a “recognition of Brazil’s ascendancy in the world,” and that Obama made it a point for Lula to be the first Latin American leader to visit the White House.
pc25 is so adept at world politics that he actually thinks a few quote marks are going to get in the way of real, important global business between the hemisphere's most powerful countries.
pc25 is so keenly aware of int'l attitudes towards Obama and the US that he actually believes that the Brasilian President is so petty that he would take this meaninglessness as a serious slight to his name and country.
c'mon now.
did you really think this story was anything more than a huge, smelly pile of bullsh*t?

Brazil is an emerging economic power whose respected (and left-leaning) leader, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has been seen as a possible intermediary between the Obama administration and several other Latin American nations.
...the White House made several moves interpreted as snubs by the Brazilian media.
Silva aides said the trip was pushed forward from Tuesday because of the St. Patrick's Day holiday -- making Latin America once again look like an afterthought. Then, the White House announcement misspelled his name as "Luis Ignacio" and put "Lula" -- a nickname that decades ago became a legal part of the Brazilian leader's name -- in quotes.

Britain has been our most steadfast ally for a long time, and we need to enhance our relations with South America. Like I read in another comment, I thought we supposed to rebuilding our international alliances. Obama's rudeness and lack of class may become a problem, and I don't know what I think of his budget except that as a paraplegic, he seems bound and determined to give me less badly needed healthcare by getting rid of Medicare Advantage. I'm Democrat and voter for him - as he was certainly a better choice than McCain - but I worry about him not knowing what he's doing. And hey, whats this I hear about spending $900 million of the tax payers money TO REBUILD GAZA when our government is not even taking care of its own citizens, and it looks like China will be extremely hesitant to loan us more money. I do not believe in foreign aid of any type when Americans are suffering, and am not really interested in hearing "there is no money" when they have wasted billions on war, and now wasting almost a million to rebuild a country who hates our guts, but will happily take our money.

the funniest thing about this is Jovi and the rest of the LIBS said it's not news and then spend the next 2 days trying to marginalize it. If it was not news in Britain and in Brazil, and if it did not portray Obama and his administration in a negative light than why waste the energy.
