Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced today that the Army will virtually eliminate the unpopular practice of " stop loss" -- or mandating that soldiers stay in the Army beyond their service obligation -- by March 2011 and will offer extra pay to soldiers whose service is extended under the policy.

    Haven't we heard that before? That they're going to 'stop extending' tours of duty? C'mon. Wait until next month and they'll end up eating their words, while extending tours of duty yet again.

      i listened to this on the radio yesterday. it was qualified by a quick blurb "except under extreme conditions."

      in other words, nothing has changed.

      I have always felt this was grossly unfair to any aerviceman/woman. It appears that the military can keep you as long as they want or until you get killed.
