SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Many detainees locked up at Guantanamo were innocent men swept up by U.S. forces unable to distinguish enemies from noncombatants, a former Bush administration official said Thursday. "There are still innocent people there," Lawrence B. Wilkerson, a Republican who was chief of staff to then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, told The Associated Press. "Some have been there six or seven years."

The last sentence is the best.
"I'm very concerned about the kinds of things Cheney is saying to make it seem Obama is a danger to this republic," Wilkerson said. "To have a former vice president fearmongering like this is really, really dangerous."

I read this a while ago, and actually tried to submit it, but Prop was acting up!

This is unforgivable, to think that bunch KNEW they had innocent people locked up and probably laughed about it..
Cheney needs to just shut his big gaping mouth, he's pure evil to the core.

Brave man to speak out, even now.
Is ANYONE honestly even a little bit surprised about this?
It never was anything other than "Round up the usual suspects" and the fact that they apprehended a handful of actual perpetrators was 90% based on the obvious fact that many natives who had cojones were morally BOUND to resist occupation and the destruction of entire cities.
        Remember Fallujah??
How many previously passive victims were radicalised there by having their loved ones murdered for no known cause?
The bottom line is that 1 American life was regarded as worth those of any number of hundreds or thousands of ignorant dark-skinned Allah-worshippers. [NOT my opinion!!!]

It should be self-evident that those, who aren´t guilty, have to be allowed to leave Guantanamo and choose freely, where they want to start a new life. How can anyone apologize the abuse of kidnapped innocents, even their torture, only to get some questionable information for the intelligence? I hope that the German government will decide to allow some of those people to stay, because it is easy to speak of ethics and human rights, especially in "old Europe", but here, these values would become concrete!

            FTA:

Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney fought efforts to address the situation, Wilkerson said, because "to have admitted this reality would have been a black mark on their leadership."

If many at Gitmo are innocent then why can't our government get their home countries to take them back?
