Rape and other forms of sexual assault against women is the great shame of the U.S. armed forces, and there is no evidence that this ghastly problem, kept out of sight as much as possible, is diminishing.

New data released by the Pentagon showed an almost 9 percent increase in the number of sexual assaults reported in the last fiscal year — 2,923 — and a 25 percent increase in such assaults reported by women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Try to imagine how bizarre it is that women in American uniforms who are enduring all the stresses related to serving in a combat zone have to also worry about defending themselves against rapists wearing the same uniform and lining up in formation right beside them.

The truly chilling fact is that, as the Pentagon readily admits, the overwhelming majority of rapes that occur in the military go unreported, perhaps as many as 80 percent. And most of the men accused of attacking women receive little or no punishment. The military’s record of prosecuting rapists is not just lousy, it’s atrocious.

    FTA:

    There is no real desire in the military to modify this aspect of its culture. It is an ultra-macho environment in which the overwhelming tendency has been to see all women — civilian and military, young and old, American and foreign — solely as sexual objects.

      Garbage post from a super liberal. This was warned against when the integration of women into the close working with the men was pushed on the military. While wrong and should not be condoned it was foretold. NOW ignored it and pushed for women in these positions.

        No, this is not garbage. Unfortunately it is true and it is endemic throughout the armed services -- even in the academies.

        My daughter was lucky -- she was only harassed before she left. She was told to suck it up, she wasn't really hurt, that's just the way it is. She said another woman was raped in her bed the week before she left.

        Closing your dorm room door, let alone locking it, is a priviledge for the first year.

          Endoscopy, exactly which statements in the article are you calling garbage?

          I also have to wonder:

          What do you mean by "it was foretold" and "NOW ignored it and pushed for women in these positions"?

          Not that what you brought up has anything to do with the article, but which positions should women not have in the military?

          Women have been serving alongside men in the military since the 1940s.

            From endoscopy: "Garbage post from a super liberal. "

            You believe you have no shame, in what you type into the screen, Endoscopy;
            but you are wrong.

            There is no shame in what the world does to us.
            Soldier or civilian, we all endure the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune as best we can.

            What is shameful is to decide to be less than a man.

            For the record, Endoscopy: women make as good soldiers as men.
            They are tough and mean and damned fast.
            They have the same desire to show off, risking their necks to serve something bigger than themselves.

            If you told someone women were too delicate for warfare, - you got the laughter you deserved.

            The toleration of sexual harrasment in the current forces is a breakdown in discipline ,
            a sign of low training and moral. It is a problem to be addressed.
            For you to fob it off as a liberal issue is creepy; dishonest;
            - shameful .
