Move Over Karl Marx - U.S. Seeks Expanded Power to Seize Firms - washingtonpost.com »

The Obama administration is considering asking Congress to give the Treasury secretary unprecedented powers to initiate the seizure of non-bank financial companies, such as large insurers, investment firms and hedge funds, whose collapse would damage the broader economy, according to an administration document.

The government at present has the authority to seize only banks.

K Marx would love this one.
Welcome to the Collective Comrades and remember; the govt is only doing this because you, the exploited proletariat, deserve the best from your govt, and protection from those evil bourgeois capitalists, because the govt loves you, the proletariat, and only you.

This is the largest power grab by the US govt in the history of this country

Don't you wonder about the timing of this Geithner bomb shell - at a Congressional hearing on the AIG bonuses?

Geithner makes this announcement at the same time the govt is claiming it wants a public/private partnership on buying up toxic assets
Think they are going to get much cooperation from the private sector when Geithner makes a proposal like this?

Ever wonder if they really don't want private firms to invest in the toxic assets?
Certainly would give them a convenient excuse to nationalize the banks, wouldn't it
The Feds could claim they tried to get financial institutions involved but were unsuccessful so were left with no choice but to nationalize the banks
Since these toxic assets are also on the books of many insurance companies, hedge funds etc, it would also give them the chance to grab these private companies too

Seems all too convenient to me

What amazes me about the left is that they are just like the right. (Bear with me, while I insult everybody on this thread.)

This is like watching the World Wrestling Federation.

It was just about 5 or 6 years ago, when the vast majority of the GOP spat reasons why we should faithfully invade Iraq without question. Just about every possible justification was cited. (Mostly, we cited fear and safety and blamed the left for being unpatriotic and spineless.)

Today, it is the left that justifies Marxism in the name of "safety." It is the left that faithfully tows the party line without question. Mostly, they lay blame with Bush/Cheney's totalitarian queue for getting us in this mess, but then foolishly believe the answer must be more totalitarianism.

The parallels between the dialogue then and the dialogue now are truly amazing.

I have a no-cost, easily implemented suggestion to Obama and Geithner for stimulating the economy. Stop scaring the hell out of the private sector with this talk of "taking over" companies that look like they are in financial trouble, don't create an "executive compensation czar" to determine private sector salaries, don't single out individuals by name in Congress, and don't send busloads of Acorn-istas to demonstrate in front of their houses. If you want to bring them into a public-private partnership to buy toxic assests, don't threaten them with confiscatory taxes and demonize them for their profit motive. Stop referring to capitalism as a failed system. If they can't do that, at least be neutral.

Can't they see that every time they open their mouths in public the markets drop?

We have no choice but to give Obama a chance. It took Bush and Co 6 years to screw things up and it usually takes longer to fix things than to break them.
If Obama can turn things around in 4 years I will be very impressed. This is a huge mess he is trying to fix.

Overall, 56% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance so far. Forty-three percent (43%) disapprove.

The disapproval number for Obama has tripled.

-- Boston Herald -- One pollster puts Obama's approval/disapproval around 50-50: "The honeymoon is over, a national poll will signal today as President Obama's job approval stumbles to about 50% over the lack of improvement with the crippled economy. ... Pollster John Zogby said his poll out today will show Americans split on the president's performance. He said the score factors out to 'about 50-50.' "

How many on here would hire Geithner or Obama to be their personal financial advisers, and would follow their advice?

I'll take bets that not one single lib will answer this question!

The thing that makes me laugh the most is that on one thread you have those jackasses PC25, Red(Rocket)J, Doggie2007 and KlarissiatheKlarvoiant calling Obama "the Messiah" while on other threads they call him Hitler and other threads, Marx.

              Schitzophrenia abounds.
