Coming Next - State Sponsored Newspapers / The Government Co-Option of Newspapers Bill hits Congress »
Posted By pc25 7 months, 2 weeks ago in NewsIt didn’t take long for Democrats to try bailing out and co-opting an industry that they see as vital to their cause. Senator Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) wants to have the federal government fund newspapers, providing the faltering industry with subsidies in exchange for control over their editorial decisions. They would also become — I’m not kidding — charitable institutions (via Michelle, emphases mine):

A news media dependent on government funding and political protection becomes an organ of government, not an independent entity for informing a free people. The Obama administration might just as well have Organizing for America distribute newsletters door to door with the Approved Information of the Day. Once newspapers become dependent on government for their survival, they will do nothing to jeopardize their standing with that government, at the state or federal level. They will form an Orwellian Ministry of Information for whichever party is in charge.
if you cant compete in the age of new media go out of business.....-

Another predictable echo of faux noise.
Reply
Wouldn't it be great if all there was was faux noise, 24/7????
Carl Rove, Dick Morris, Pat Buchanan, Newt Gingrige, Sara Palan, Drug Limbo, and all these right wing Goebbels level hate mongering point of view relativists, funded by the same billionaire mogals that fund Israel and the American war industrial complex.
You people are so completely brainwashed, it's really amazing. You all are crapping 24/7 all over your own country, trying your best to tear any progress down, so the rich can continue owning and raping what is left.
Let the republitool right wing mating dance commence. -

What I think this is about is that most cons don't (and probably can't) read. Seriously, they're illiterate. They don't care about the journalism world at large because they're used to having their news shouted to them in small soundbites via radio and television. Having alternatives to FOX in the game reminds cons that there's a whole world of information out there closed off to them simply because they don't know that many words with more than one syllable. Right now as they're tiny brains are struggling valiantly to process the information in this post, they're probably asking themselves who even really needs to use words that require sounding out?
Reply
Maybe you think I jest but think about it...How many times do we hear cons putting down "elitists" (whooo...Obama speaks well...how can we put a negative slant on that?) and deriding our public schools, or whining about "liberal" professors (well that's kinda convenient) or sobbing that public broadcasting is a waste of money because the lefties dominate the programming with annoying fact-based stories and documentaries about illegal wars and penguins and cute cuddly animals with fuzz around their cute lil chins? Who doesn't like to watch penguins? Helllooo? In fact, none other than yours truly is a sucker for cute, fuzzy, animals...Only I hate when they film one getting snatched up off the ground by a bird of prey or attacked by wolves or whatever...Though,come to think of it, wolves are cute and fuzzy in their own way. Their babies are even cuter (but not as fuzzy). Oh...Sorry. Where was I? Back to cons...
--Cons say the education system sucks but then they nominate, elect, re-elect and praise people like Bush, Sarah Palin, and John McCain (serious underachievers, to put it mildly) and they don't care if their hero Bush chooses underachieving nitwits like Monica Goodling and gives them 100K plus jobs. Who cares if more qualified cons or liberals deserved those jobs? Cons should have been outraged but they didn't care. They just sat back slack-jawed with their eyes glazed over and watched Rush. :-(

"Tyranny cannot be safe without a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace." James Madison
Reply
Given how the press fell for Obama during the campaign perhaps they will qualify for funds under the Faith Based Initiative
This is absolutely the most ridiculous proposal I have seen
This might explain Cardin's angst:
Liberal mainstream media titans are falling faster than snowflakes in a globally warmed December. On Monday, the mainstream media conglomerate Tribune Company, which includes the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Baltimore Sun, the Orlando Sentinel and Chicago’s WGN broadcasting company, among others, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to rapidly falling revenues and circulation induced by the loss of advertising dollars to Web-based publications
The Balto Sun, largest newspaper in MD, and very left is about to go under-

How stupid do you have to be... to think the right wing media tycoon Sam Zell, owner of the Tribune group, the hard right zionist neocon jew israel firster billionaire, is a liberal??? He fired every Journaiist in the Pultzer prize winning LA times, fired everyone at the Chicago Tribune, and turned both into an advertizing rag, so he could try and sell for a profit, just like your hero, the Austrailian Media Billionaire Murdock, and his tool, the right wing Isreal firster neocon hard right propandist Roger Ailes did at Faux Noise.

Your loyality is to the political arm of the right wing billionaires, and if you weren't an obvious coward and an idiot, I'd consider you a traitor. But, your just one more Caribu Barbie voting moron.

Being taken over by the government would really be the nail in the coffin for newspapers. Who would go to the trouble to read the propaganda? The only purpose they would serve would be to line the bottom of a birdcage or paper-train a puppy.

If this is true, it is just another example of where "too big to fail" leads. When your business model is failing, you need to change it, not look to the nanny-gov to prop you up -- unless, of course, you're "too big to fail".

The thought of the gov't having any kind of ownership stake in the press is frankly, quite terrifying. And that's the truth whether it's democrats OR republicans in power. -

Never underestimate how a group of cons is even stupider than a con who thinks on his own.

Oh, that's right, there is no such think as a con who thinks on his own.
Listen to what you are saying, can't you see what a collection of lock stepping idiots you sound like. Not an origional thought or even a shred of intelligence, just propanda and swiftboating of objective journalism.

If the newspapers fail and the public educational system are not hiring, where will all of the shapers of public opinion go?
Reply
Seriously, where is the harm in letting a percentage of newspapers fail?
Although the elimination of the ability to endorse political candidates would remove the mystery of which Democrat would get said endorsement. -

If we really had a liberal news media in America it would demand the end of our illegal aggressive wars of conquest. It would demand a new investigation of the controlled demolitions on 9-11. It would call for an audit of the Federal Reserve cartel and it would expose the rampant bribery in Washington. It would represent the hopes and dreams of the people not the corporations. Newspapers are failing in America because they spend their time either expounding elite propaganda or wasting time on sensational nonsense.

Faux noise is all the cons need, the rest (objective information) is all communist propanda for the con mind.
If it doesn't involve bending over for some corporate executive or Pope or just some Paris Hilton inheritor of wealth, like thier Hero George W Bush, the cons are not interested.
Hup two three four, who do cons bend over for? Rupurt Murdock, Karl Rove, the rich, Saudi Princes, Drug Closetgayboy.

The new powers being bandied around for government will someday go over to the opposition party. Powers given are hard to rescind. We must assume the worst outcome of the use of these powers if given to the government when considering their value.

Newspapers have generally been editorially biased toward the left for many years. I understand the left's concern, but to prop them up for their advantage will not be helpful. It will only be a larger waste of paper. Republicans won't read them and most Democrats can't. -

This is just another step toward socialism. The liberal media already acts like the state run media. Now to have a state run newspaper?! I wonder if we'll have a choice as to which communist country to live in? What? A choice? Ha! Ha! Yes, the Nazi Liberal Herald coming soon to a gulag or concentration camp near you.

Nazi papers of world domination and degradation by enemies of the State only go to Concentration Camps....

Papers of liberation from the evil bourgois and stories of 'proletariat happiness' of the working masses happly producing for the state and therefore the welfare and happiness of all citizens of the world only go to Gulags.
But I do like 'the Nazi Liberal Herald'...
Say it ain't so......Could we have Libo-Nazi's acting as a 'disruptive mole element' in our workers paradise?
Sounds like another class struggle in the making. Has AIG and the NYT heard anything about this.

I'm sorry , somebody please help me out, what in god's name is liberal about supporting aggressive war, and the mass killing of civilian populations for corporate gain. Echoing the lies that brought us to war . Condoning torture and illegal wiretaps or the political assassination of Elliot Spitzer for trying to shine a light on the controlled collapse of our financial system?

Comrade 0Bama, the perfect model of absolute truth in a truth less bourgeois world, will tell you, in simple words and sentences, because your brain is too small to think for itself, what to think and how to think and what to say to stay happy and be less 'bitter' about your lowley place in the workers paradise of the United Socialistic States of American.
