Coming Next - State Sponsored Newspapers / The Government Co-Option of Newspapers Bill hits Congress »

Posted By pc25 8 months, 1 week ago in News

It didn’t take long for Democrats to try bailing out and co-opting an industry that they see as vital to their cause. Senator Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) wants to have the federal government fund newspapers, providing the faltering industry with subsidies in exchange for control over their editorial decisions. They would also become — I’m not kidding — charitable institutions (via Michelle, emphases mine):

and they talk about reinstating the Fairness Doctrine.......apparently the conservative blog sites are giving the libs fits

    FTA

A news media dependent on government funding and political protection becomes an organ of government, not an independent entity for informing a free people. The Obama administration might just as well have Organizing for America distribute newsletters door to door with the Approved Information of the Day. Once newspapers become dependent on government for their survival, they will do nothing to jeopardize their standing with that government, at the state or federal level. They will form an Orwellian Ministry of Information for whichever party is in charge.

if you cant compete in the age of new media go out of business.....

"Tyranny cannot be safe without a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace." James Madison

Given how the press fell for Obama during the campaign perhaps they will qualify for funds under the Faith Based Initiative

This is absolutely the most ridiculous proposal I have seen

    This might explain Cardin's angst:

Liberal mainstream media titans are falling faster than snowflakes in a globally warmed December. On Monday, the mainstream media conglomerate Tribune Company, which includes the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Baltimore Sun, the Orlando Sentinel and Chicago’s WGN broadcasting company, among others, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to rapidly falling revenues and circulation induced by the loss of advertising dollars to Web-based publications

The Balto Sun, largest newspaper in MD, and very left is about to go under

Being taken over by the government would really be the nail in the coffin for newspapers. Who would go to the trouble to read the propaganda? The only purpose they would serve would be to line the bottom of a birdcage or paper-train a puppy.

If this is true, it is just another example of where "too big to fail" leads. When your business model is failing, you need to change it, not look to the nanny-gov to prop you up -- unless, of course, you're "too big to fail".

The thought of the gov't having any kind of ownership stake in the press is frankly, quite terrifying. And that's the truth whether it's democrats OR republicans in power.

But after 8 years of Bush how dare we fear these things? I mean a country taken over by progressives is far better right? Even if they take away every right we have?

If the newspapers fail and the public educational system are not hiring, where will all of the shapers of public opinion go?

Seriously, where is the harm in letting a percentage of newspapers fail?

Although the elimination of the ability to endorse political candidates would remove the mystery of which Democrat would get said endorsement.

If we really had a liberal news media in America it would demand the end of our illegal aggressive wars of conquest. It would demand a new investigation of the controlled demolitions on 9-11. It would call for an audit of the Federal Reserve cartel and it would expose the rampant bribery in Washington. It would represent the hopes and dreams of the people not the corporations. Newspapers are failing in America because they spend their time either expounding elite propaganda or wasting time on sensational nonsense.
Most Americans know more about Britney's sexlife than they know about the US Military explosives found in the rubble of the World Trade Center.

Behold, another lovely Easter basket of ignorant myopic right wing opinion, the sludge leftovers from viewing faux noise non stop, not to mention Drug Gayboy listening 3 hours a day.

Faux noise is all the cons need, the rest (objective information) is all communist propanda for the con mind.

If it doesn't involve bending over for some corporate executive or Pope or just some Paris Hilton inheritor of wealth, like thier Hero George W Bush, the cons are not interested.

Hup two three four, who do cons bend over for? Rupurt Murdock, Karl Rove, the rich, Saudi Princes, Drug Closetgayboy.

What a snap shot of america the stupid. A collection of status quo hate filled Rambo wanabes, stupid to the bone.

The investigative journalists are the 4th leg of this former democracy, but listen the to the above collection of Sara Palin voting imbiciles crap all over their own country.

Of course, the same above collection of idiots wants creationism to be taught in schools, and thinks science and statistical analysis is a liberal communist plot.

The above collection of subhuman morons, each day display their brainwashing by faux noise tabloid watching, like the idiot lemming brown shirt sieg heiling brown nosing bend over for the rich morons they are.

The new powers being bandied around for government will someday go over to the opposition party. Powers given are hard to rescind. We must assume the worst outcome of the use of these powers if given to the government when considering their value.

Newspapers have generally been editorially biased toward the left for many years. I understand the left's concern, but to prop them up for their advantage will not be helpful. It will only be a larger waste of paper. Republicans won't read them and most Democrats can't.

This is just another step toward socialism. The liberal media already acts like the state run media. Now to have a state run newspaper?! I wonder if we'll have a choice as to which communist country to live in? What? A choice? Ha! Ha! Yes, the Nazi Liberal Herald coming soon to a gulag or concentration camp near you.

I'm sorry , somebody please help me out, what in god's name is liberal about supporting aggressive war, and the mass killing of civilian populations for corporate gain. Echoing the lies that brought us to war . Condoning torture and illegal wiretaps or the political assassination of Elliot Spitzer for trying to shine a light on the controlled collapse of our financial system?

Freedom of speech, which leads to arguments about Govt policy and assorted other differences of opinions and thereby foments unhappiness with in the ranks of the proletariat, will soon be controlled by state run news papers....

Comrade 0Bama, the perfect model of absolute truth in a truth less bourgeois world, will tell you, in simple words and sentences, because your brain is too small to think for itself, what to think and how to think and what to say to stay happy and be less 'bitter' about your lowley place in the workers paradise of the United Socialistic States of American.
