FactCheck.org: Obama's Prime Time Pitch »

Posted By Klarissa 8 months, 1 week ago in News

President Obama sometimes strayed from the facts or made dubious claims during his hour-long evening news conference March 24.

Some exaggerations and misstatements from his evening news conference.

Obama is correctly characterizing the differences between his projections and the CBO’s figures. But it’s not entirely accurate to say that the administration's assumptions are consistent with the Blue Chip Economic Indicators, which is a survey of forecasts from 50 private economists. In fact, the most recent Blue Chip forecast is far more pessimistic than either CBO's or the administration's.

Obama said he was "angry" about those "inexcusable" AIG bonuses, and called for Wall Street to restrain its "outsized" pay:
. . . We don't dispute that the president felt angry; that's for him to say. It’s worth noting, however, that Obama's own administration opposed tough rules, passed by the Senate, that might have prevented AIG from handing out those bonuses in the first place.

Not all the errors came from the president. Kevin Chappell of Ebony magazine asked a misleading question about homelessness and the recession.

Chappell: A recent report found that, as a result of the economic downturn, 1 in 50 children are now homeless in America. With shelters at full capacity, tent cities are sprouting up across the country. In passing your stimulus package, you said that help was on the way. But what would you say to these families, especially children, who are sleeping under bridges and in tents across the country?

A study from the National Center on Family Homelessness, released March 9, did find that 1 in 50 children, or 2 percent of all children in the U.S., are homeless at some point during the year.

But NCFH has a broader definition for homelessness than Chappell implies. Its definition isn't restricted to children who are "sleeping under bridges and in tents."

It also includes children whose families are staying with friends or family members, in hotels and motels, in trailer parks or in "substandard" housing.

What I found amazing were the following sentences which came one right after the other:

'And we will continue to do whatever is necessary in the weeks ahead to ensure the banks Americans depend on have the money they need to lend, even if the economy gets worse.'

"Finally, the most critical part of our strategy is to ensure that we do not return to an economic cycle of bubble and bust in this country. We know that an economy built on reckless speculation, inflated home prices, and maxed-out credit cards does not create lasting wealth. It creates the illusion of prosperity, and it's endangered us all."

First he tells Americans that the banks need to start lending them money
Then he follows with the "maxed out credit cards" line

He knows that unless we start spending again the economy won't recover since consumer spending is 70% of GDP

I think that most Americans realize that the spending binges can't continue - that is why we are seeing an increase in savings and people paying down debt

Wouldn't it be better to concentrate on getting manufacturing jobs back here?
We produce very little and an economy built on spending is not sustainable
Why is this so difficult for Washington to admit?

This is what is in store for us if Washington doesn't wake up

No buyers for Government bonds as debt fears grow
Mounting fears about Britain's soaring national debt derailed a gilt auction for the first time in seven years.

The UK failed to find enough buyers for £1.75billion of 40-year bonds, receiving bids for just £1.63billion.

The last time the Government's Debt Management Office was unable to attract enough investors was in 2002 when it tried to sell 30-year index-linked bonds.

The flopped sale sent ripples of alarm across the City, given that the Treasury has to flog a record £146.4billion of gilts this year.

It came just a day after Mervyn King urged the Government to be 'cautious' about racking up extra deficits in the April 22 Budget, sparking a row between the Bank of England and Downing Street.

Adding to tensions, King criticised Gordon Brown's decision to order the Bank to target a measure of inflation that excludes house prices. This 'probably made it more difficult for us', he told a House of Lords committee.

I just cannot see any wise investor buying up bonds on "toxic assets".

Out of fear that it is a deep hole of debt the government cannot handle, or afraid that if they do the government will find some excuse to limit their profit ot take it away as obscene.

It was a wonderful speech. Inspiring and expertly delivered.

I've not seen such an eloquent speaker since the likes of Abraham Lincoln.

I'm honored to have him as the president for the next 8 years.

      ROTFLMAO
So you listened to Abraham Lincoln did you?

On a serious note it was not Lincolns eloquence that was the great thing about him. It has been found in going through his effects that he kept working on ideas continuously. His Gettysburg Address had concepts he had been working on for months. A lot of what seemed extemporaneous and quickly drawn up was really the result of his long term working on these concepts. The people that wrote about how he sounded said he had a high pitch voice that was not very charismatic.

What we have with Obama is a charismatic man that can deliver a great speech making whatever words put in front of him sound great. He makes little content sound like he is saying everything needed. This news conference is an example of his lack of thinking things through. He also tell wrong facts in this. Possibly unintentional but it makes him seem like a liar. Those four bullet points show this.

The claim that he is going to cut the deficit in half in 4 years ignores that his spending this year is over $2 trillion in deficit. He is going to cut his own huge deficit spending in half. Leaving it hugely higher than the Bush deficits that liberals correctly ranted against.

Another problem that Obama had was using the technique of answering a different question than the one asked and the reporters just ignored that for the most part. And he is supposed to be a new kind of politician. Open and transparent. Not hardly.

He talks well that's true enough, I'll give him that. And after Bush I can see why anyone would love the idea of a well spoken president (I know I like that about Obama).

However, were you really inspired? Can you honestly put this man on the same 'inspirational' platform as the late great Abe?

      Surely you jest.

Obama has not uttered one 'phrase' for history,,,, "Ask not What your Country",,, "There is nothing to Fear", Four Score and ". He has said "The Buck Stops Here" but that's not his.

Inspiration is about hope of the future, until a week ago he only talked gloom,,,,,, even now he just says hey don't blame me I inherited this mess, which is true. But the man ran for president of the US like those much Greater Men Before him in the past that also Inherited some difficult stuff that said,,,,"Ask not What your Country",,, "There is nothing to Fear", Four Score and ".

ith all this money tossed around to save the ‘middle’ class. Would it not have been better to just pay off all housing owned by those in the 30-150K range?

        • That would have solved the banking problem and the ‘bonuses’ would have gone to the people that will have to pay them off anyways.
        • Instantly the middle-class would have received a $800+ ‘stimulus’ in their monthly income. I’m thinking, that would help more than $13 bucks a week for a few months.
        • The banks would be made more ‘whole’ with the influx of money and most of their mortgages aid off.
        • This would save AIG as well.
        • Then the auto loans would begin, saving that industry.
        • More Autos mean more steel; I think you get the picture.
        • Then you’ll still have $400 a month extra (if you aren’t dumb enough to blow it all on a ‘nice’ ride, to save, or spend on other items, repairs or the like.

Nope instead, we are going to be saddled with a few hundred thousand dollars of additional debt for each American and get our 13 bucks and be thankful that the campaign promise of 95% of us WILL see a tax break was Kept.

Thanks DC you guys and gals are da bestest!

Amazing how you cons, who over the last 8 years created the largest pile of crap ever created in the history of the planet, expect the elected officials to clean it up in less than 3 months, while you whine and cry and snipe like the cowards and babies you are, complaining about which way the wind blows, while sitting like the lazy greedy slugs you are in your armchairs.

8 years of repug greed, rape and murder, and listen to you whine while the elected government tires to right the sinking ship. Not one of you cowards will take ownership of creating the problem, unregulated greed, casino capatalism, lying the country into a trillion dollar war, murdering half a million innocent muslims who had nothing to do with 911 for a neocon zionist militaristic experiment gone bad, the largest economic redistribution of wealth in the history of the planet to the rich, and you yellow bellied cowards won't admit you caused all this for voting for the bush regime.

freaking yellow bellied cowards. As ignorant as they are arrogant. America the stupid. You cons were born on third base, and swagger around bragging you hit a triple.

Meanwhile listen the cons crapping all over the officials elected to clean up the mess you made.
