    Are you ready for change?
    Here it is!
We are all about to live the principles articulated by Saul Alinsky, whose 1971 book "Rules for Radicals" articulated a socialist strategy for gaining political power to redistribute wealth from the "haves" to the "have-nots."

    Welcome to the have-nots!

FTA-Moreover, an amendment to the bill introduced by Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., one of the bill's 37 co-sponsors in the House, appears to severely restrict the First Amendment by prohibiting the youth participating in the program from attempting to influence legislation, organize or engage in protests, petitions, boycotts or strikes.

FTA-It is uncertain whether restrictions will survive into the final legislation that would prohibit GIVE Act participants from being recruited under the program to work in ACORN, a radical community organizing group facing criminal charges in several states for voter fraud.

FTA-The problem is that taxpayer funds under the GIVE Act could end up getting paid to volunteers in organizations that are doing political advocacy activity,"

Yes. God forbid Americans should be asked to work to make their country a better place and get paid for the experience, rather than be able to go out and score a below-living-wage job at McDonalds and get stuck in food service the rest of their lives.

Yet another lying headline. I've read the relevant sections of both HR1388 and the U.S. Code and I find nothing, absolutely nothing that could be described as "mandatory".

Mandatory, for those impaired by long listening to Rush Limbaugh and Fox News is:

      "containing or constituting a command"

There is nothing in this bill that mandates that anyone has to be a part of a, ahem, volunteer organization. So there you have it.

Read the bill and then read the relevant sections of the U.S. Code.

Then tell me if it's mandatory or not. I can't find anything that even suggests that.

You can tell on these threads who wants to work for a living and those that want others to work for THEIR living, those that applaud Obamas Socialist Bills and "spreading the wealth" ideas are those that want others to do the work and they make the profit and those that don't want socialism are the ones that are fighting against Obama. I have worked since i was 13 because I WANTED to no one made me , i like the idea of a hard days work not sitting on My Azz and making other support me. and those "below living"wage jobs that are referred to are there to help ppl make and start a job history which you need to get the higher paying jobs or do you believe that any should be able to get a executives wage and job with no experience ??? Oh wait you do because you voted for Obama

Will you all be honest. Your oposition has nothing to do with it being volunteer or the ages.

What you're all against is that the President wants to increase the amount of money they make, increase their education awards (can pay back part of their student loans.), as well as what they currently get.

Just be honest. And AGAIN have any of you who are against it talked to the volunteers or the sites to see the good that is being done?

I can tell you right now ND AmeriCorps members and Conservation Corps members have been helping sandbag. Members in SD, ID, Iowa and MN as well as other states will be there helping clean up after the flood as well. But you all don't want to talk about that either.

      question:

if some sort of mandatory service bill gets passed, how many liberals here would approve of such a bill?

I fail to see what the problem is, even if the service were mandatory, which it is NOT. The bill as written and the Title I code to which it applies mentions nothing, NOT one IOTA about this being a compulsory service.

What if this were some sort of civil service that were mandatory? It would mean that teenage crime might actually drop in inner cities because teens and young adults would be empowered to make their communities a better place to live. Most European countries already demand civil or military service between the ages of 18 and 21. Consider Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. All of these countries have compulsory service for teens. Much of what they learn through the volunteer programs translates into job skills which they can use later in their careers.

We are investing in our nation's future. What is the problem that so many Conservatives have with wanting to improve our nation rather than just saying no to every proposal put forth by the Dems?

HR 1388 is a harmless bill to vaguely encourage volunteering

It isn't about anything mandatory, isn't about anything
manditory, and even in point of fact has nothing to do with
      anything mandatory.

The neo-con people quacking in panic above are acting in possession of a demon of deceit and fear.

Let us all take sober warning of their sad fate and strive to avoid it by encouraging an ambition to be honest.

Well if this bill is about volunteerism, but the volunteers get paid by taxpayer funds, isn't that just a government job?

I "voluntarily" go to work everyday in the private sector, but it's because of the paycheck.
