Chess players will always strive to improve their games so that they can win more games. This incentive of satisfaction in working out a win provides an urge to learn the opening theories, the variations, tactics in middle game, end game theories and so on. Through your effort to memorize such things, you will find an improvement in your memory. Like body muscles, memory also needs exercise to develop. Playing chess automatically provides this exercise. The improved memory has another positive effect. It helps to guard against the onset of Alzheimer’s disease that tends to affect a good number of people at their old age.

I sure wish I had the time to play chess. When I was a kid, I was on the chess team. My wife gave me a beautiful chess set a couple years ago...but there is no place to display it. Ah, time and space. We'll have more of that one day - but we'll miss the kids.

I try to play a few a games a week at least. I'm not great, but I try to develop different openings and strategies, as well as middle and end game ploys.
It has definitely helped in my memory as well as renewed a vigor for varying my routines. -

I love chess, but don't often have anyone to play with. Freecell has some of the qualities of chess. Logical, requiring planning several moves in advance. It's a great way to tune up the brain for the day and since all but one freak game is technically "winnable", you have nobody but yourself to blame for losing.

I like chess sets with a theme. It makes the game a little more interesting. One of my favorites that I have owned since childhood is a carved stone set. The king and queen are about 5" tall. I learned not to play sore losers with that set because the rook was breakable.

I wrote an online chess game a couple years back.

But there wasn't much server power,
so it had 2 levels; idiot and beginner idiot.
But I had fun with the choices of board and pieces.
my favorite was a jungle background overlaid on the squares,
the pieces were colored in dark and light camoflage patterns.
Unless you were one of those players who
can remember all the moes in their head,
You had to move slowly and carefuly, watching the jungle.

Chess is a good game, but it gets annoying after a while. If you wanna play something even more fun, try crazyhouse or better yet bughouse.

FICS hosts a lot of bughouse games and if you are interested you can download the client to play on your PC or even on your iPhone. You can play all kinds of chess there including normal, speed, suicide, atomic, crazyhouse, bughouse, etc.
