Why do people use cell phone service that doesn't provide good reception everywhere? When did Americans become gullible enough to use cell phones more often than land lines, when land lines are more reliable, cheaper and never run out of power?

People I know who have dropped land lines in favor of cell phones alone are mostly single people who found that everyone tended to call their cell phones rather than leave messages on their home phones when they were at work and they felt it was a way of simplifying their communication system, especially if they use phones with e-mail capability.

Yes, younger people tend to use cell phones because they find them cheaper and more convenient, plus the additional features and fewer spam calls.

He was ranting about Americans as if it's their fault a cell phone doesn't work at a specific hotel, while even in the same city, it depends on things like where valleys or cell towers are located, and travelers usually won't know this until they reach a city, even if it shows up on the coverage map.

My nephew was visiting with a phone by one of the major providers, and he had problems in areas where my phone, from the other major provider, didn't. Where he lives, his provider has more thorough coverage than mine.
So it sounded like Beau was blaming people for something beyond their control--Americans, specifically.

I'm using this as an opportunity to rant about the way so many people (American and foreign included) adopt new technologies that don't work, and about the fact that corporations (American and foreign included) don't bother to make their products work correctly before introducing new ones with other features that don't work.

I was responding based on your response to my response. Guess I don't consider cell phones a new technology. As I said, I keep one on travel so I can be contacted in family emergencies.

I frequently criticize U.S. government policies and politicians myself. And I normally consider your posts to be quite insightful, too. Maybe I need to listen to Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown" for inspiration!

I have a land line at home. I have a cell phone for when I travel. And different providers have different coverage, and if you're located in a low-lying area, for example, or near an area that jams cell signals, your reception may not be adequate. Thus, it makes sense to stay in a hotel where one's cell phone works. Seems pretty logical to me.

It depends. Pay-as-you-go or low minute/restricted hour cell phones can be extremely cheap.
Cell phones with 450 anytime minutes are about 30% cheaper than land lines with long distance service in my area. They are about the same price as land if they have unlimited anytime minutes.
Cell phones with 450 anytime minutes are almost twice the cost of digital phone service through broadband internet in my area.
Regular land lines work in most power outages, which can be very handy if you work through the internet in many areas (compared to broadband internet).
Of course, a cell phone is great for emergencies.
