Over the years there have been more than a few tax cuts and packages aimed in doing what Prez O's is. The problem is that it takes time to implement them. The economy moves at such a speed that by the time these things are implemented they are often no longer needed. That's the basic argument I might have with Prez O's stimulus pagkage--that it doesn't do what it's purportedly aimed at, viz. getting money into the economy quickly. Some of the stuff it included was nice and some badly needed ; but quick?--not.

As part of MO's share of the stimulus package, the new highway that comes to within 2 miles of my door will be extended to about a mile past. I love the road. It's been long needed; it saves me and my neighbors lots of driving time; and the areas along and near it are suitable for many kinds of businesses. But it won't be completed until late 2010. I guess the guys who were working on the previous segments will keep working on this; but it doesn't look to me like there'll be any new jobs. If one assumes that they would have had nothing to do otherwise and would have been unemployed, I guess you could call it job preservation. Personally, I'm skeptical of that.
