I hope this really is the beginning of the end,of the war in Iraq.If President Obama keeps his word, there will be none,or very few,Western combat troops in Iraq by 2011.
It was a war that I opposed.Saddam Hussain was a nasty piece of work no doubt.Though had there not been a war,Iraqi civilians would not have suffered,to such a massive degree. There would have been few,if any "jahadists"in Iraq. There would have been no American,UK,or other coalition deaths.
The future for Iraq is still far from certain.I hope all the death, suffering and destruction, will not have been totally in vain.A democracy, with civil rights, conforming with international law,is/was the ideal outcome.I guess the biggest fear was that it would become another Afghanistan. The truth as always will be somewhere between the ideal and it's opposite.
There is still the lingering threat of Iraq breaking apart. There could be a Shia south,a Kurdish north and a Sunni center.Though this "threat"has lessened,it is still a strong possibility. Why it's perceived as such a threat,I'm unsure. It could lead to further bloodshed and ethnic cleansing, but could be handled peacefully.
For me a federal State offers the best solution, the best possibility of Iraqi people,of whatever ethnic group, living peacefully and prosperously side by side.
Though today only a few thousand British troops, past on their responsibilities to American troops. It felt like the first step towards dismantling the West's massive war machine.
I do hope that, after the Saddam years and all that entailed. Then the massive strife of war and the "Jahadists"trying to gain a foothold, that the ordinary Iraqi will be left to prosper.

It would be fantastic if a friendly democracy really could come about in Iraq, instead of Sharia Law. But, I'm betting it will become like Afghanistan when our heroes are pulled out of there. If not, man, I'll be wrong BIG time about Islam conquoring the world.
