Pew Poll: 1 In 5 White Evangelicals Still Believe Obama Is A Muslim »
Posted By TimALoftis 8 months, 2 weeks ago in Political NewsMore than two months into Barack Obama's presidency, as many people incorrectly identify him as a Muslim as did so during the 2008 campaign. When asked about Obama's religious beliefs, 11% say he is a Muslim. In October, 12% said Obama is a Muslim, which was unchanged from earlier in the campaign.
In the current survey, 35% say they do not know Obama's religion, either because they do not know enough about him (22%), or because they have heard different things about his religion (13%); another 6% refused to answer.
As was the case last fall, white evangelical Protestants (19%) and Republicans (17%) are among the most likely to view Obama as a Muslim. Fewer than half in each group -- 38% of white evangelicals and 46% of Republicans -- correctly identify Obama as a Christian.

I'm sure that comparable percentages also PURPORT at least equally strongly to believe in a literal (rather than an alllegorical) interpretation of the Book of Genesis, and in the notion that The Deity fawns over only US alone (out of all the vast universe it has created), and they probably also believe in the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy.

LOTS of people blithely "believe" whatever they WANT to believe, and equally blithely ignore mere "logical" inconsistencies and irrationalities in their systems of belief.-

Well ofcourse they do. Obama is supose to be the enemy. The enemy cant believe in the same god as we do. Oh no, he has to be a Muslim. Yes Muslims are the enemy. Ofcourse the entire religion is responsible for 9/11 regardless of the facts that there are millions of muslims in our country not committing crimes of terroism, and are infact doctors and lawyers.

Anyone know the rule "once a Muslim ALWAYS a Muslim OR one is killed by a Muslim???? He was resistered as a Muslim as a child and attended prayers at the local Mosque until he left Indonesia.
Reply
OR did you hear the interview when he spoke "of my Muslim faith" only to amend it at the prompting of the interviewer??
There is grounds for believing he is still Muslim because of these facts AND his apparent departure from Orthodox Christian tenets of faith. All recorded on video tape!!!-

No but I've hear the saying that once an idiot always an idiot. When Obama was a child he had no chice of religion but when he was old enough to make a choice he chose to live with his grandparents while his mother chose to go to other places. What faith is John McCain? Once an Episcopal always an Episcopal? McCain switched faiths after adulthood but that is alright I guess.
"OR did you hear the interview when he spoke "of my Muslim faith" only to amend it at the prompting of the interviewer??"
Saw the interview and that statement was taken out of context. They were discussing John McCain staying away from the issue of calling Obama a Muslim.
"There is grounds for believing he is still Muslim because of these facts"
Only in your own mind just as those radicals that still don't believe Obama was born in Hawaii even though the state of Hawaii has it on their record that he was. -

Hi Redneck, A Muslim is a person who submits his will to the will of God but Obama is not a Muslim just because he was born to a Muslim father. He might have attended prayers and followed any other Islamic way of life when he was a kid but does he follow Islam now? There is no such thing as secret Muslim unless there is a threat to his life. BTW, Is it wrong to be a Muslim in a country that is Secular not a religious theocracy? Why can't be a Secular Muslim like Husny Mubarak or any other despot becoming a leader of America? I don't see any difference between Zardary of Pakistan and an American leader they are both same in their greed for power and control and also when it comes to hypocrisy and they have nothing to do with the religion especially Islam because Islam will never compromise any of its principle for the sake of worldly life and pleasure.-

Here's how the Republican party uses "religion." First, you need to understand the difference between religion and Christianity. The religious crowd believes in keeping sacraments or "works" as a way to gain favor with God. Christians believe that works are not sufficient.
Reply
Now, the right wing recognizes that they only have to appeal to "strong opinions" or ideology. They don't necessarily have to be a Christian to use religious ideology. So, they say things like "anti-aborition" and like the Pope "no condoms." Now your religious zealots will think "yes, these people agree with me," becaue they believe in the same things that sound right to me.
All the while they sponser wars killing innnocent men, women, and children. In the case of Bush, they torture, steal, and murder. In the case of the Pope, these "perfect people" like priests are molesting young children. The Catholic church covered it up.
You see people can't be perfect, because we are sinners. Christians know this, but the religious people don't. The Republicans fool the religious people by pettiness at the expense of the larger picture. -

Why is it that the Evangelical right has such a low level of intellectual curiosity? I would seem that they are incapable of original thought. RRJ has shown time and time again that his facts are based on opinion and hearsay. The twists and turns he uses to justify his inane statements are astounding.

See - them Lie-berals believe in an INFINITE God ... with INFINITE possiblity.
We Christian Evangelicals dont go for all that hocus pocus.
It says reight in the Bible that Man was made in the image of God. So ... right there ... you know God aint very smaht.
Cause mosta the folks I know here in Ocala ainnt very smaht. My friend Cletus is so dumb ... If his brains were dynamite, he couldn’t blow his nose.
So right theres proof that God aint smaht. Why try to expand our world view when God is already accepted us as our equal? Dont make no sense.
That also explains why we pride ourselves on not votin for smaht poeple for president. Thats why we LOVED GeeDub.

What difference would it make?
I mean ... granted ... as a Christian Cosnervative, its yours and my duty to ridicule other faiths. Thats all part of bein a Modern Christian in AMerica.
Thats just ONE of our duties.
The other duty is to vote for candidates who work to keep children from getting access to health care ... oh ... and our support for Welfare for the Wealthy.
But, heres the deal ... if we say that moslims AINT allowed to be presdient ... aint that like the old Soviet Union ... where you could ONLY be Premier if you were an avowed ATHEIST?
Now, I understand that our Modern Republican Party has gotten a LOT of inspiration from the OLD SOVIET UNION ... after all ... a hardliner is a hardliner ... be them in America ... or The Old Soviet Union ... but still ... your outrage seems kinda weird.
REALLY weird.

automan - If you just bothered to google Barack Obama's history, you would immediately discover that Barack Obama's father was named Barack Obama.

What is so bad about wanting to bear the same name as one's father? Doesn't the Fourth Commandment order Christians to honor thy father and mother?

The heading of the poll was "No Decline in Belief That Obama is a Muslim".
Reply
The sub-heading was "Nearly 1-in-5 White Evangelicals Thinks So"
Based on the poll numbers, the sub-heading just as easily could have been:
"More Republicans now think that Obama is Christian than before" ,
OR
"Fewer Democrats now think that Obama is Christian than before"
OR
"About(.35)-in-5 Democrats still think Obama is Muslim"
This can all be understood by looking at the poll data and applying some simple thought to it.-

Roughly 15 million of my fellow Christian Evangelicals believe the lie that Obama is a Muslim.
In addition ... 4 million refused to answer the question about Obamas religion. Youd have to think that some of them believe him to be moslim.
Thats more poeple than live in NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES ... and CHICAGO ......... PUT TOGETHER!

At the end of his presidency, 23-25% of Americans still supported Bush.
Reply
Which shows there will always be a minority percentage of stupid people who will believe whatever they're told to believe despite mountains of evidence to the contrary.
