FTA-"One friend, Edward Perkovic, said the gunman feared "the Obama gun ban that's on the way" and "didn't like our rights being infringed upon." Another longtime friend, Aaron Vire, said he feared that President Obama was going to take away his rights, though he said he "wasn't violently against Obama."
Reply
This nutjob didn't have his rights taken away by Obama, instead he has now lost them because of his own insane actions.
Credit should be given to the police who took this guy in alive. They acted professionally it seems, while I am certain their emotions would have had them wanting to act otherwise.-

Yes, this guy is truly a nutjob, and it's very sad that these people lost their lives.
Reply
The police definitely acted professionally in managing to take this guy in alive. Maybe psychiatrists can learn something about insanity by observing and interacting with him.

That is insanity. Police officers like all citizens are innocent until proven guilty. This is not a matter of an eye for an eye. It is a matter of law and order. Sure there are bad cops out there. But I would suggest their number is rather small.
Reply
As for the NYC incident you refer to I believe the police were acquitted after a grand jury investigation. Like it or not that is our justice system. And considering the number of encounters between police and criminals made in NYC incidents such as that one are quite rare.
The option is anarchy. Thankfully we do not operate on a "law of averages". Please once again try to justify why these officers deserved to die? Explain it to their families. Their wives and their kids. What exactly were they doing wrong? Responding to a domestic violence complaint I believe?
Very sick logic. -

Hobe - Of course the stories about bad cops or mistakes in shootings get all the publicity and outcries.
Reply
However, we overlook and take for granted all the good work they do - ensuring our safety, arresting criminals, putting their lives on the line for the greater society. For that we owe them our profoundest gratitude, but the police seldom get that.
This is not the place or the time to rant about the few bad cops that are publicized. We should just mourn and honor the 3 policemen that have just been killed.

I was at my nearby Wal-mart today and walked by the sporting/gun cases. The clerk and a customer was talking about the shortage of various types of guns, shells, and bullets due mainly to what they saw as the Obama fear.
Reply
Scary that these types exist.-

No it's not scary that they exist; it's scary that their fear has a basis in fact. Guns and ammo are flying off shelves like never before. You think that's all due merely to people who, like the Pittsburg nutball, just want to kill some cops?

Recreational shooters and people who think guns are the only reasonable means of self defense (women, people with disabilities, etc.) are very concerned, because Obama has never been friendly towards the 2nd Amendment. Even on whitehouse.gov he lists several things he plans to do that would abridge rights and, IMO, not have the desired outcome.
So people are buying up guns they believe may be banned and ammo of all kinds in case his administration does something to make it very expensive (tax, manufacturing specs, etc.) or impossible to find. The guns and ammo are mostly being bought up by these recreational shooters--not lunatics.
Regarding the craziness, during the Great Depression, the suicide rate sky-rocketed, and we have been moving towards a depression, in case people are in an area where they are not seeing the fallout of the economy. Our local soup kitchens can't keep up, and the people who used to donate to them are out of work and in line themselves. People frequently don't cope well under such conditions.
I think the economy is definitely scary, but I think people who value their right to defend themselves are just thoughtful.

In 1982 a women woke up and found her car and her 14 year old son gone, she called police and said if you see him and stop him and make sure he gets home okay, her son had just went for a joy ride the note told his mother. The police found him and called for back up they started a chase with him and he was scared anyway being 14 and taking his mothers car.My mother had a police scanner at that time and were listening to it all, they tryed to get him to stop but he just stepped on the peddle and was going about 90 to 95 miles an hour while all of them had that high speed chase with him. I well never forget what happened. every policeman that was in that chase with that 14 year old boy shot at him the car stopped. after a while, on the news the next day it showed the car , on that car all you could see was bullet holes it was like the whole car was covered and the windows all shot out they killed the 14 year old boy and she had ask them to make sure he got home safe. I well never forget it it was alful.

The statistics suggest that legal gunowners are a very peaceful lot. When guns are banned, criminals terrorize the citizens--like in Mexico, Congo, the U.K., Australia...
Reply
That's why the U.S. founders did something different--they decided to trust ordinary citizens and involve them in their own self-protection and that of the community and the nation.
Lunatics are a small percentage of the population. Most people are law-abiding and would help the police if they could. That's why our founders chose to arm U.S. citizens.

The fact that these three officers were murdered as they were is a true tragedy.
Reply
An even bigger tragedy is that there was no way of knowing that this nut job would do such a thing when he was allowed to obtain the guns. The same is true about the mass killing in Binghamton - the killer was actually a permit holder.
I was in one of my customer's home, he had about 3 dozen guns in his den, some in boxes not even opened. Why does a sane individual need that many guns? Is he going to be the next to make headlines? Or are the guys who burglarize his house going to be the ones?-

There are many millions of gunowners who have a variety of guns, and the vast majority never commit crimes involving guns. And gun collections are an investment for a lot of people, and a great source of retirement income.
Reply
Recreational shooters enjoy shooting different kinds of guns--they all have special purposes. And since Obama states on whitehouse.gov that he plans to ban some and change laws that undercut rights, people have been buying them while they still can.
Concealed carry permit holders are far less likely to commit crimes with guns than the general population.
The facts just don't support the hysteria over guns--even if we didn't have a Bill of Rights.
