"My husband — you know him. He is going to be very jealous of my afternoon," the First Lady said Thursday afternoon during a visit to a girls' school in London. "He is meeting with important people, but it is not as much fun as my afternoon."

Michelle Obama has been busy demonstrating both what an immense asset she is to her husband and his mission and what an inspiring human being she is in her own right.
Not only did she charm and delight the Queen, but here she is mingling with a multi-racial cast of schoolgirls and knocking their socks off too.
I found it a tear-jerker - but I am a softie (except when confronted by prejudice, hypocrisy, unkindness, cruelty, racism, fascism, communism, violence and lies).

Lets also be clear that Michelle was NOT implying that her young admirers were unimportant - she was in fact demonstrating quoite the opposite simply by her presence.
    As the article puts it:
"This was a rhetorical feint of sorts, since Michelle's whole point was that she was meeting with important people too, a group of about 200 proud teenagers from a mind-boggling variety of backgrounds. The Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School has about 1,000 students, all of them girls ages 11 to 17, two-thirds of whom speak English as a second language. Fifty-five languages are spoken at the school. Ninety percent of the students are ethnic minorities, and no single ethnic group makes up more than 21% of the student body. As a group, they treated Obama as if she were an American Queen, a personification of what they can only dream of becoming in a country where no minority has risen nearly as high as the Obamas."

"This is her new role, it seems, a balance to her husband's grim and sober task."

The writer is exagerating a small bit, to draw an interesting picture where Obama is dressed in a black cloak and holding a scythe, and Michelle is in white robes with a gold halo.

He brings grim news; she brings hope?
But it was very well written.
      Thanx Gama!

I sent heads-ups re this story to my maximum of 25 individuals who I believe are all of the female persuasion. It seemed to me that they might appreciate it the most - which is not to say that I thought men wouldn't enjoy it too..
I'm grinning from ear to ear about it and my partner whose diligently preparing some of the work that we share, in the adjacent room is wondering what the chuckles and exclamations are all about..

Gama, I'm hurt! I'm a male and I like the story. Wife and I love Michelle and the class that the Obamas have brought to the White House. It's not the elite aristocratic type of class but a very human, down-to-earth type of class. They are people who care about other people, all other people.
I'm going to forgive you this time for the slight. Don't let it happen again.

Just from her picture at the top of the article, you can see the kindness in her eyes. She appears to be such a gentle woman. Her persona exudes grace and intelligence, and i will say it again, she's a class act!

Last week I submitted a BBC article concerning Mrs. Obama and how the UK seemed to be falling 'Heads over Heels' for her. I personally saw it as a 'Feel Good' piece and thought that most if not all of the comments on the thread concerning our new first lady would be very positive and as uplifting as the story was. I was wrong.

I don't listen to talk radio and for that matter I spend very little time watching cable news which has turned into nothing more than 'Opinion TV' or as CNN's former anchor, Aaron Brown once called it 'Hate Radio on TV'. In turn I did not know what certain segments of our society was thinking or being told what to think. After doing some surfing on various conservative blogs, I found this anger...it was the same anger that crept into the Propeller comment thread as well. For me it was a awakening that these feelings existed and was in fact this strong in opposition of our First Lady.

those obamas!! the world just seems to love them. maybe its because they are approaching the world with an open hand and without the sense of entitlement that Bush brought with him when he met world leaders. by contrast, the obamas seem to want whats best for everyone, and they mean it. they're definitely not out there trying to put some plan into play that has a very narrow, selfish focus and will only benefit themselves and a small circle of people. and the world seems to really appreciate that.

and no matter how much the cons try to put a negative spin on their every move (he insulted the president of brasil!! she insulted the queen of england!!) nobody cares.

because the obamas are what no republican seems to have the ability to be: inspiring.

must really suck to be a con these days.

Well, the rhetoric is different, but many of the actions seem to fit in perfectly with Bushie style military imperialism.

The secrets of Obama's surge in Afghanistan

Is United States President Barack Obama telling it like it is as far as his new strategy for the Afghanistan and Pakistan war theater - AfPak, in Pentagonspeak - is concerned? There are reasons to believe otherwise. ...

The Afghanistan-Pakistan war has got to be 2009's prime theater of the absurd. It took the New York Times and the usual "American officials" something like 13 years to "discover" that the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) - a Central Intelligence Agency twin - helps the Taliban. And this while the CIA, alongside their ISI pals, is compiling a mega hit list in the Pashtun tribal areas inside Pakistan. Maybe this is what US Central Command supremo General David "I'm always positioning myself for 2012" Petraeus means by a "trilateral" love affair, as he told CNN's State of the Union. ...

Obama is selling the surge basically as nation building, based on trust. A hard sell if there ever was one - as Washington cannot trust the ISI or the Pakistani government, while the Pakistani masses don't trust Washington.

Insistent rumors in Washington point to a troika - Holbrooke-Petraeus-Clinton - finally being able to convince Obama that the surge should be just the first step towards long-range nation building. Anyone with minimal familiarity with Afghanistan knows this is an impossible strategic target. ...

Richard Holbrooke, Obama's special envoy to AfPak, finally let it slip on CNN: the "people we are fighting in Afghanistan" are essentially ... Pashtuns. This was followed by a stark admission: "In the informational side ... we don't have a strong enough counter-informational program to combat the Taliban and al-Qaeda."

So this amounts to the State Department admitting that the Pentagon/Petraeus "humint" (human intelligence) component of counter-insurgency in AfPak, hailed as a gift from the Messiah all across US corporate media, is essentially useless. This also means there's no way of winning local hearts and minds.

                    Thanks g

I believe this is a couple that understands their roles and respects them.

I am a male heterosexual and appreciate the fact that you still invited me to review this article -- most of which I agreed with except this one statement:

<<For Barack, the big question is how he is going to save the world from economic and nuclear Armageddon. For Michelle, the big question is who made her darling cardigan with the sequins and the argyle print.>>
