Right after the Vermont legislature voted (100 to 49, precisely the 2/3 needed) to over-ride Governor Jim Douglas' veto this morning of a law permitting gay marriage, my daughter got a text message, "Yeah, Vermont!"

    So long ago, Vermont passed one of the first of its kind laws protecting the civil rights of gays and lesbians in public accommodations, housing, and assuring protection against discrimination on the job. Today, Vermonters celebrate equality for all as they allow gays and lesbians to wed. The law in Vermont lacks a clause that says that only Vermonters can wed there. Truly, they have taken a huge leap forward.

      Its been a good couple of months for the gay rights movement. Vermont and Iowa, almost back to back. I only recently heard the news (actually just read it on another website) and I'm quite thrilled.

        Next it is the turn of the voters. How many legislatures will be replaced by those proclaiming to repeal the law. They blocked it going to a vote by the public.
