Comments for Officials: FBI launches criminal piracy probe »

FBI agents are investigating the Somali pirates who hijacked a U.S. ship and are holding its captain hostage, U.S. officials said Saturday, raising the possibility of federal charges against the men if they are captured.

That's right, don't save the captain, just probe, study, form a committee, talk about it.

"If there were ever a U.S. victim of one of these attacks or a U.S. shipping line that were a victim, our Justice Department has said that it would favorably consider prosecuting such apprehended pirates," Stephen Mull, the acting undersecretary of state for international security and arms control, told Congress last month.

    Wow - prosecute!

    How about saving the Captain?

This is stupid. When is someone going to tell Obama that the FBI does not have jurisdiction. This is outside the US. It is the job of our armed forces. Jefferson dealt with these same kind of pirates in 1805 and later. He sent in the Marines and all of a sudden the Islamic Barbary Pirates were no longer Pirates. I guess these Islamic pirates need the same education. Or does Obama have the backbone to do what Jefferson did?

FTA "Under U.S. law, crimes aboard U.S. ships or against U.S. citizens can be prosecuted in U.S. courts, even when they occur in international waters."
That's all fine and dandy but the problem is that the FBI can and will only go after the group who attacked the ship. We need to destroy every one of these terrorist pirates which the FBI does not have the jurisdiction or the manpower to do.
          This is a Navy/Marines solution.

No it isn't. There are still thousands of these terrorists floating around waiting to strike again. They still have control of 17 other ships in the region. Do you not care about that???

If Obama has since given the Navy the authority to seek out and kill everyone of these terrorists in the region he has done the right thing. If he is saying "ok, we got our guy lets prosecute the captured pirate and be done with it" he is dead wrong!

He has been rescued. Just because authorities are doing on thing doesn't mean they aren't doing anything else. Its called multitasking. The FBI is looking into this while the Navy was working on the rescue.

That's the problem that we've faced in recent years...lack of a thorough focus on jobs needing done. Energies can be spread around, focus can be shared between agencies, and more than one stone can be turned at a time. That way the WHOLE job gets done instead of fixing an isolated leak in the boat while ignoring the huge hole ripped in the hull. It's good to see things are getting back to where they should be...finally.

....'raising the possibility of federal charges against the men "if" they are captured'.......

If? Why bother prosecuting them? A US Navy Destroyer has them in sight and you can bet your ass there is a Navy SEAL team on board waiting for either an FBI Negotiator or a bleeding heart liberal politican to make up his lame ass mind whether or not to rescue the poor guy. I say execute those Somali pirates on live video. That should send them a message to the rest of them.

While it is still extremely early in his administration, this "strongly" reminds me of the Iranian Hostage Crisis of the Jimmy Carter presidency.

Q: What did it take to finish the standoff back then?

                  A: President Reagan.

I was listening to CSPAN this morning, and (some, not all) liberal callers were making excuses for the pirates. Here's some examples:

                    1. They are pirates because we've driven them to a point where they have to steal to survive.

                    2. Just pay them the money and then tell them - next time - we'll do what has to be done.

                    3. This is just like oil in Iraq. Somalia has something we want and we're setting them up for war. I can "sense" it.

Folks, these were real comments...I'm not making them up.

They weren't close to the shore:

The Alabama was loaded with food aid when the pirates hijacked it Wednesday, 350 miles off Somalia's coast -- a distance that used to be considered safe from pirate attacks.

                          http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa/04/09/ship.hi...

Since the cargo ships are sailing further off of the coast, the pirates are using mother ships to take them out to sea then use the small dinghys once they are close to the ship they want to hijack

Time to start taking out a few mother ships

                        Karissa,

You know, this isn't an isolated offense, how many times have these pirate terrorists hijacked ships and passengers? Why can't these waters be secured by those countries who routinely use them (NOT just the US)? These pirate terrorists continue to do this with impunity, what has THEIR government done to stop it?

FTA: Attorney General Eric Holder said this past week that the Justice Department had not seen a case of piracy against a U.S. ship in i very long time. But authorities have prepared for such an event as the threat of piracy along the African coast has risen.

Does it seem to anyone else that "authorities have prepared for such an event"?

International; law forbids cargo ships to carry arms. (Of course that's Obama's fault!)

International law, cargo ships not to be armed. Years ago it had to do with mutiny and seizing a valuable cargo. Through the gulf of Aden there should be a armed group on each vessel ready to shoot if their ships are boarded.

like when they hijacked a ship full of RUSSIAN tanks.. the Ukrainian's PAID.. to get them back... it was the US that stood watch over that one. . to make sure the pirates didn't offload the tanks...

Feb. 6 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Navy delivered food, water and fuel to a Ukrainian cargo ship that was released yesterday after being held by Somali pirates for four months.

Sailors from the USS Mason also checked the health of crew members on board the Faina, a Belize-flagged vessel, the navy said in a statement.

The Faina, with a cargo of 30 Soviet-designed T-72 tanks, was seized on Sept. 25 and freed after the Ukrainian government paid a $3.2 million ransom, according to the pirates. The U.S. navy has tracked the ship since the hijacking to ensure the cargo didn’t end up with Somali militias.

The ship is anchored off the Somali port of Hobyo, the navy said. The Ukrainian government said yesterday the vessel would deliver its cargo to the Kenyan port of Mombassa before sailing back to the Ukraine.

The ship had a crew of 17 Ukrainians, three Russians and one Latvian when taken. The Russian captain died of a heart attack shortly after it was seized.

The hijacking spurred Russia to send a frigate to the waters off Somalia, where pirates last year seized 43 vessels. Nations including the U.S., France, India, Britain, Denmark, Italy, Greece, China, Malaysia and Taiwan have also sent warships to confront the increase in piracy. About 10 ships are still being held by pirates.

Maybe 0bama is afraid because there might be five pirates? Or maybe everyone hasn't come back from their "brain storming" groups with ideas.

When I was a sailor in Korea in 52,and 53 we had a repel boarders program. When, and if the alarm was sounded, the ship would sound general quarters, and every one on the ship would report to their assigned station. Many would be armed with ten gauge shot guns.Today that would be consider a vile attack on people who hate and want kill us.I need a directive on what to call them.

Did they ever prosecute those Somali's that killed those Americans in Mogadishu in the 90s? did they ever prosecute those Somalians who dragged our dead soldier through their streets, hooting and hollering. Screw Somalia, may they get what they dish out.

guess all you tough guys.. aren't related to the hostage.. and he's just collateral damage.. and in fairness.. he's probably prepared to die..one way or the other.. but who kills him is a major deal in the eyes of the international community... I'd bet Bush's navy would not have "blown them out of the water" either..

                                                remember..

all's well that ends well.. so let it end..

Blackwater USA should send over a few teams disguised in luxury yachts and let them mow down some of these trouble maker skinnies!

this problem should have never been allowed to escalate to this level. This has been going on for years. Bush should have stopped it and Clinton too.

Now this man's life is in danger because he wanted to save his crew. He is a hero that deserves to be rescued NOW! Then these cowards should be blown out of the water, end of story.

I like the idea of attaching a cable to the life boat and towing it around (in circles??)
