I can fully understand the Vatican not wanting to have Caroline Kennedy as the United States' representative to the Vatican. After all, they should be allowed to dictate the politics and policies supported by all the ambassadors and faithful who come there. They should remain forever enclosed in their own little domain, and never waver. After all, one would not want someone who is a killer or a Nazi taking the papal throne, no?

It's not so much about the Vatican dictating anything to the US. More to the point; the Vatican is expressing dis-pleasure with the Kennedy's themselves. After all, they say they are Catholic, but do not support or defend the Vatican (catholicism) on important issues, such as abortion. If Caorline Kennedy proposes to be a Catholic, then her actions should reflect as such.

What koolaid are you drinking? An appointment to being an ambassador is what the president does. Sending a person who publicly goes against their beliefs is an affront to them and Obama should have known better. There is nothing the states have to do with this.

We shouldn't have an ambassador to the Vatican anyway.

Yes, I realize the Vatican is recognized as its own sovereignty, but they also hide behind the tax exempt status of "the church" as a way of pushing their influence and not being held accountable for it. We don't have ambassadors to every single sovereignty in the world, so there is nothing that says we NEED one to the Vatican. It's about time the churches and religious zealots stop having so much power and influence over our government, and dropping this ambassadorship would be a great place to start. At least until and unless the Pope is willing to stop straddling the legal fence in our country and hiding behind the cloak of religion to avoid full executive responsibility for his interference with our political workings. -

Hate to say this, but Endo is right on a few points. One, the Vatican is considered a country or state, and two they can refuse any diplomatic representative that they want. Though it is foolish for the Vatican and Endo to expect all diplomats from all the countries around the world to share the same views as they do. For example, conservatives attempt to convince the population that this country is founded on evangelical principles. So by that logic, combined with Endos logic, it would not be outrageous for us to expect the Vatican’s diplomatic representative to us to not believe in praying to the saints or the holy virgin because that would totally go against the protestant teachings this country is suppose to uphold.

Is that a little bit more up to speed for you Endo, because I am so here to please you.-

I suggest you read the history of who came to the shores of America and why they came. Going forward when did Christianity leave the country. The last poll taken about beliefs has Christians at 75% of the country. There was a 10% drop in the 60's but that has plateaued. What was the founding fathers of this country? Almost all of them were Christian. George Washington made the statement that if the country does no stay a Christian country the Constitution will fail. Why? Because the fact that Christians have an ethic from God and it is the same for all Christians. Adhering to that ethic allows the Constitution to function.

Where you fail to think is the fact that Kennedy is a supposed Catholic that sounds off publicly about her beliefs going against church doctrine and she knows that. If she was not a Catholic there would probably not be a problem. It puts the Vatican in the position of having a conflict with church discipline of adherents on one hand and treating her as an ambassador on the other. Of course non religious people never think about that problem. -
