But the down side will be the money that they have projected but not recieved will be spent ahead of time. When people either quit, go across state line or go the black market way. What will the govt. do when it has a short fall? Raise them again, say that alcohol or candy , or fatty food is just as bad and make a "sin tax" for them next? That is closer then you think. We really need to be careful. Before you know it, they will tax the air that you breath. Don't laugh, they are trying to tax a by-product of breathing now. (carbon dioxide)

"The ends DO NOT justify the means." This tax is wrong, as the Founding Fathers would agree. Have you ever read the "Uniformity Clause" of our Constitution?
Section 8 - Powers of Congress
"The Congress shall have Power to Lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States."
It is MY CHOICE and I ENJOY SMOKING! Just wait until BEEF is taxed by the ounce (due to cholesterol and associated health problems).
BTW, have you ever read the warnings on a bag of BBQ charcoal? Here in California it lists many of the same carcinogens as those found in tobacco smoke. In the name of the NANNY STATE WE MUST OUTLAW (or heavily TAX) CHARCOAL NOW! Think of the CHILDREN at our parks and beaches, breathing in these TOXIC FUMES as we cook our burgers and hot dogs! Outlaw or TAX charcoal NOW!!! I dare these hypocrites in favor of this tobacco tax to do so. What an UPROAR we'd hear.
And just watch how silly this all gets. GOD help us, for we are no longer a FREE NATION, unless one considers the freedom to do what one is told as FREEDOM.

* With the number of smokers already declining, a tobacco tax would further reduce the number of smokers, thereby eroding the funding source."

--But what if we're paying out less in healthcare costs because we don't have to pay for smoking related health problems? -

Any time the Government taxes something it is for their benefit not ours.
The people of CA voted for a .25 cent tax hike on cigarettes years ago to pay for rising medical costs and provide care for those who were affected by cigarettes.
The government took that money and has done what it pleased with it. Look at the financial condition of CA now.
No, these taxes will just fund more buearocratic black holes of tax payer funds being sucked into the hands of the incompetent money managers in the government.
These people are completely lost because they don't have to earn their money they take it from us. -

A Dutch study published last year (2008) in the Public Library of Science Medicine
Reply
journal said that health care costs for smokers were about $326,000 from age 20
on, compared to about $417,000 for thin and healthy people.
...
However, smokers die some 10 years earlier than nonsmokers, according to the
CDC, and those premature deaths provide a savings to Medicare, Social Security,
private pensions and other programs.
...
Vanderbilt University economist Kip Viscusi studied the net costs of smoking-related
spending and savings and found that for every pack of cigarettes smoked, the country
reaps a net cost savings of 32 cents.

Don't know if this is true or not, my ex told me this like 30 yrs ago and I haven't really delved into looking, but he said someone in the tobacco industry found a way to make cigarettes that were NOT addictive. Somehow someone else in the tobacco industry put a stop to that real quick.

I remember in the 60s where a big majority smoked, our teachers, my dentist right when we were in the chair, our doctors etc..it wasn't just poor people. and smoking was everywhere, on planes, in elevators, in hospitals etc...
and I'm just saying.....-

Poeple need to do thier research on the amount of money this country spends on the side effects of smoking. COPD, emphazema (sic), lung cancer, The main problem is that most of these people get so sick that they cannot work anymore and become eligible for welfare or medicare. They get a monthly check and health insurance that all healthy poeple may not be able to afford. The diseases caused by smoking have cost the government billions of dollars. A tax on smoking is like asking you to pay up front for the treatment that you will need 20 years from now.

Interestingly enough, many people that hate cigarettes have no problem smoking pot, which they don't have a clue what was put on the plants to make them grow, what could have been sprayed on they,,,, and they smoke it without filters and try as best they can to hold the smoke in their lungs as long as possible to ensure the best results.

A quick perusal of the many marijuana growing sites on the internet shows that not only do people not put stuff on the plants "to make them grow," but that there are really no products out there for this purpose, save old fashioned plant fertilizer.

The "best results" for smoking wouldn't have people holding smoke in for any more than ten seconds.
Of course, the vaporizers are big with the kids now - perfectly safe.
But it's great to read a purely vicarious post!

I have worked and paid for my health insurance and social security for 40 yrs. I'm entitled to collect every friggin penny I paid. You don't pay for me. You may pay for all the obese and overweight people who stuff junk food in their mouth and don't know what a job or exercise is. Not to mention all the junk food foodstamps pay for. 1 in 5 4yr olds are overwight or obese in this country. Thats something to get ****** off about.

I quit smoking in protest of higher taxes. Plus I don't buy Alcohol and limit any thing else that they raised taxes on. There are to many Democrats in congress. We need to vote some of them out. Get it back to the point that it takes a few from one side or the other to pass any thing.thats the only way we will see bi-partisan legislation.

$326,000 from age twenty until what age? I'm 57 and healthy. I don't care how healthy you are when you get old you get sick, smoking or not. Things wear out. $417.000 if your thin and healthy. My health insurance and social security is paid by me for 40 yrs if I get sick I PAID FOR MY HEALTH CARE. NOT TO MENTION ALL THE CIGARETTE TAXES I HAVE PAID SO I'M NOT GETTING ANYTHING FROM ANYONE ELSE. What are the medical costs if you overweight or obese. I bet it's a hell of a lot more.
