I would say legalize it just because it will stop the mexican drug cartels. In Northern Cali. these guys are hiking to the middle of our national parks and setting up shop. THen the slash and burn the forest so they can grow some weed. It's crazy..

Ending prohibition is the only logical option. FTA: "Harvard University economist Jeffrey Miron published a report showing that legalization would save $7.7 billion each year on enforcement, while generating as much as $6.2 billion in taxes. In response, more than 500 leading economists wrote an open letter to federal and state officials supporting a regime of legalization and taxation."

Wow. Imagine the states where the deficit would be helped by this. Imagine the resources that the police would have to go after violent crimes. -

hey, let's all give the druggies a free get out of jail card. do you really believe legalizing mj would decrease the damage it would do. do you want drug driving accideents to be like drunk driving, arrested 30 times and still driving. how about a drugged up person running over your fanily mamber and paying a fine and walking away. THIS IS A BAD IDEA.-

do you really think ANYBODY is deterred from doing it by the fact that weed is illegal?

Do you really think that all kinds of people who don't do drugs now will run out and start toking up the minute it becomes legal?
If it is legal, it can be regulated and taxed -- like liquor. This can make it a bit more difficult for kids to get their hands on it. The dealers don't care who they are selling to -- and when you get down to the local dealers, it's usually kids, themselves, selling it. At least, that's the way it was when I was in high school. Even a dealer who is not a big, bad "evil drug dealer", is not going to worry too much about selling dope to a 14 or 15 year old if the little entrepreneur is only 15 or 16 himself.
As far as driving impaired, enforce the laws we have. It is illegal to drive impaired -- regardless of the substance causing the impairment. Making marijuana legal will not make driving stoned legal.
And, btw, having driven with drunks and driven with stoners, I'd rather drive with a stoned person any day of the week -- if I have to get in a car with an impaired person for any reason. -

Actually, you should do some research. A study conducted by the University of Toronto showed that stoned people actually tend to drive more cautiously than sober people, and certainly FAR more safely than drunk people.

"Toronto researchers analyzed new data as well as several controlled international studies and concluded that marijuana-impaired drivers compensate by driving more slowly and cautiously. "

The Gallup poll data gives me pause. We are on our way, but we are not there yet.

In my view, marijuana should be legalized, taxed and regulated the same as liquor (complete with the prohibition for those under 21). It is much less harmful than alcohol.
The myth that marijuana is a "gateway drug" has been floating since the '60s or '70s... This makes a good selling point for the failed drug war, but has no basis in fact. Here are a the myths surrounding marijuana:

Truth is most of us never "graduate" to anything harder. And I would submit that the "happy hour" drinker is much more likely to cause harm to others than is a pot smoker.
The good news - to put it bluntly - is that the old farts are dying off and opinion is moving to our side. -
