Recession Fueling Right-Wing Extremism in U.S., DHS Says »
Posted By ybdogsct 7 months, 2 weeks ago in NewsRight-wing extremists in the United States are gaining new recruits by exploiting fears about the economy and the election of the first black U.S. president, the Department of Homeland Security warned in a report to law enforcement officials. The DHS report said such fears were driving a resurgence in "recruitment and radicalization activity" by white supremacist groups, anti-government extremists and militia movements. It warned that home foreclosures, unemployment and other consequences of the economic recession "could create a fertile recruiting environment for right-wing extremists."
Extremist groups are preying on fears that President Barack Obama, the first African American U.S. president, would restrict gun ownership, boost immigration and expand social programs for minorities, the report said.
It said such groups were also exploiting anti-Semitic sentiment with accusations that "a cabal of Jewish financial elites" had conspired to collapse the economy.

We have seen this kind of thing before in the world. Perhaps we should be addressing urgently the identity of the oligarchs that finance the extremist campaigns. Germans would have been much better off if that had been done in time in Germany.

Historical Comparisons: Fritz Stern Publishes "Five Germanys I Have Known"
"Can It Happen Here?" is the headline of the NY Times review of the Fritz Stern's memoir:
In November 2005, Fritz Stern received an award for his life's work on Germans, Jews and the roots of National Socialism, presented to him by Joschka Fischer, then the German foreign minister. With a frankness that startled some in the audience, Stern, an emeritus professor of European history at Columbia University, peppered his acceptance speech with the similarities he saw between the path taken by Germany in the years leading up to Hitler and the path being taken by the United States today. He talked about a group of 1920's intellectuals known as the "conservative revolutionaries," who "denounced liberalism as the greatest, most invidious threat, and attacked it for its tolerance, rationality and cosmopolitan culture," and about how Hitler had used religion to appeal to the German public. In Hitler's first radio address after becoming chancellor, Stern noted, he declared that the Nazis regarded "Christianity as the foundation of our national morality and the family as the basis of national life."....

Economic pressures were indeed the catalyst for the unleashing of the forces of Nazism in Germany but the agenda was not identical to that of the neocons.
In some ways the US has an even more frightening potential for explosion, fuelled by the overwhelming number of guns in private hands.
Not every gun owner is going to be on the same side but there is obviously a preponderance of right-wing weapons enthusiasts.
The maverick factor, which bears no resemblance to any historical precedent is the issue of drug gangs and the potential for the "war on drugs" to get completely out of control.
Mexico City comes to the US?
Perhaps not, but that problem still has the potential to inflict or incite great damage to the culture and social fabric of the US.-

"But it warned that home foreclosures, unemployment and other consequences of the economic recession "could create a fertile recruiting environment for right-wing extremists."
"To the extent that these factors persist, right-wing extremism is likely to grow in strength," DHS said.
The report warned that military veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with combat skills could be recruitment targets, especially those having trouble finding jobs or fitting back into civilian society."
The department "is concerned that right-wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to boost their violent capabilities," the report said.
What better way to divide the people of the United States than by having recent veterans turn against their country and president.
I've already read the coments of some vets on here that take me back to the days of the Nam vets. Unemployed and feeling angry, dangerous.
Yeah they could try to turn us against each other. But I hope Americans know beter than that. Because United we are strong, divided we are easily broken apart. -

There is a duplication coming now. Under Warren G Harding and Calvin Coolidge the depression was brought on. Reagan and the Bush's copied the actions of Coolidge and Harding. Hoover hardly did anything. It wasn't until FDR came in that things improved. Obama will be the new FDR but better just by his current actions.

At that time, though, far right extremists grew as well, just as today they are there.

FDR fixed it all right. 10 years of 20% unemployment. He killed the chance of business starting by having a tax rate for the rich of 90% to 100% for a while. The rich put their money where it would not earn anything and that killed the money for businesses to operate and start. Then he spent tons of money putting the country into hock that has not been paid back today.
Compare that depression to the one in 1888. The government did nothing and it was over in 2 years.
Then Nixon and Ford had some inflation. Ford had it going down a bit mostly by vetoing a lot of Democrat spending. Then came Carter and the spending took off again. Stagflation hit. 8%+ unemployment, 13%+ inflation, and 20%+ mortgage rates. Carter did not have to raise taxes by law because the ladder system back then had people going up the ladder to higher percentages. Get a raise and it is wiped out by the increase in taxes. Kept going until Reagan dropped the tax rates and in 2 years it was over.
Great plan tax and spend. Keeps the problem going for a long time. Historically it has failed every time. Doing nothing or lowering taxes has had it get better quickly. Of course liberals never want to hear that. They have to have the rich punished even though that means less revenue for the government. Silly liberals. -

For those of you who think this is some kind of liberal creation. A few quotes from an actual Right Winger who associated himself with before the election. Somehow he felt comfortable saying these things. That is until i told him I was voting for Obama. The question now is whether to turn his emails over to the authorities. Still torn on that one..but see for yourself...
Reply
Some actual quotes:
"Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Rahm Emmanuel, Teddy Kennedy, Barbie Boxer, Diane Feinstein...God, I could name ALL of them, if I had the list in front of me. What's going to happen in the next four years with our Supreme Court...does it matter to you? Look a bit deeper. Sorry, Pal...to keep from being run over in ANY way by those self-serving pr*cks, I'll load as many 30-rd. mags into the SIG556 as necessary...and experience pure joy from the taking."
"That's what the 2nd was and is all about...not duck hunting! When government goes out of control and departs for our Founders' vision (too far), it's time for Patriots to take action into their own hands. Sound crazy? Too bad."
"I'd personally take the skinny black bastard out, if there were any more decent backups for him in line...think Biden, Pelosi, etc. I'm thinkin' that'll happen on its own, inside a year's time, anyway."
" If it happens (Obama's election), I won't be listening for any crying from wacko liberals...an axe handle to the head will make it quiet real quickly. It's blood in the trenches, my friend...screw polite boxing rules."
How's that for extremism! You want to suggest again these people don't exist? Some random quotes from a right wing extremist! Evidence that is likely going directly to the Secret Service because I don't trust the local authorities to do anything. This idiot owns over 100 weapons including a supposed machine gun. As I have said before I can easily blend in with these types. He thought for months I shared his views.
Still think this is a joke! I hesitate to turn him in but I would also suffer some extreme guilt if he did something and I did not act. If the ATF showed up at his house they would be in for a firefight. A real mess but I think he is one of many.

And to all the supporters of the 2nd Amendment (and I AM one, believe it or not....this is one of the FEW issues Obama is to my left on...), stop the panic. We have three branches of government, including a conservative judiciary and a congress which - despite all the screams to the contrary - has many conservative "blue dogs" who have no desire for gun control. (I live in Arkansas and I can tell you with certainty that my congressional delegation would vote against any restrictions in gun laws). And to tell you the truth, anything more than a reinstatement of the Brady Law (which banned assault weapons...a move even I support, BTW) would be a waste of Obama's time.

We have a supreme court that upholds the 2nd amendment by a 5-4 vote, and our far-left president will soon have the opportunity to replace a few of them (no doubt some of the five who voted in favor of the 2nd amendment - or am I being speculative?).

Thanks for the story, ybdogsct. The combination of economic strife, disorderly immigration, abuse of foreign "guest-workers" and a black American president from left of the center certainly are perceived as a vital threat by the wingnuts and hate groups. Advocating violence against the Obama administration smarts of a fascist backlash that needs to be addressed openly.
Reply
That these extremists account for less than 16% of our population should never be taken for granted. The danger of ignoring the rise of a reactionary right wing movement in this country could be disastrous. Uniting people by fear of economic security can certainly bring homophobic, xenophobic, racist, and antisemitic personalities together. Exposing their rhetoric and conduct is imperative to defusing their influence.
After 8 years since our constitution has been dismantled, it is vitally important to restore confidence in a government that respects constitutional law and international law. These are precarious times we are in; nothing should be taken for granted.-

There is Spadecaller thanking ybdogsct for a story that is ridiculous on the face of it. The head of DHS has her head where it does not shine. What are the operative words that lead me to say that? "said threats had so far been "largely rhetorical.", could create, likely to grow, is concerned, similar assessment of left-wing radicals completed in January, likely to accelerate" A lot of hot aier speculating about what might be. Why don't you liberals go and find the document released in January about the left wing problems. It is probably more of this nuttiness.

How exactly a society can defend itself against these incidents is beyond my capacity to imagine.
Of course the presence of guns in every corner of the nation in immense numbers is the worst possible starting point.
There's NOTHING more undemocratic than someone loose with a gun who shouldn't be - even someone who's just having a VERY bad day.

The Modern Republican movement began with two groups uniting their most heart-felt issues into a Political Force - thereby empowering each other.
1) Christian Conservatives, (arrayed from Ocala Florida to Coeur d'Alene Idaho - and from Midland Texas to Paducah Kentucky) - were outraged at their perception that Liberals were bending over backwards to help black people ... providing welfare. You have to imagine how outrageous this was to a group of people who lived for decade upon decade under a racist society.
2) Politically minded Conservatives - nationwide - were outraged at the efforts of Liberals to scale back our massive military expenditures. They were incensed that they were not permitted to turn Vietnam into a "Parking Lot".
But it was the issue of Abortion that created a politically convenient nexus for these two affiliations to claim they shared a similar agenda.
That's why I always say ... the Modern Republican Movement was born on bigotry and fear provoked war mongering.
Look, it really isn't a very long step between murdering those four Freedom Rider boys in Mississippi ... to shooting police officers in Pittsburgh under the Right Wing Media Inflamed Paranoia that Obama is coming to take away people's guns.
We're only talking 45 years between the murders of those young Freedom Riders ... for daring to register black people to vote in Mississippi to today.
We're only talking 45 years between Little Rock Central High School and now.
Social attitudes rarely change dramatically. And when they do - they more often coalesce under some other malformed, redirected misanthropic manifestation ... as opposed to being reformed towards any positive expression.
For instance, RedRiverJ is trying his level best to instill a fear that Obama is a Communist.
pc25 is trying his level best to instill resentment and fear for Obama from every angle.
Glenn Beck is trying to instill fear that Obama is a Socialist out to destroy our country.
Many have tried to instill fear that Obama is a Muslim - as if he's a turbaned terrorist.
Others have even tried to instill a fear that Obama is not even an American!
These are merely echos of 1950's Joseph McCarthy and 1960's KKK rhetoric.
I think things are changing - but it will take many more decades.

Your idiocy about Christian conservatives flies in the face of reality. Who pushed through the civil rights acts? Christian Republicans. Too many of the southern Democrats voted against it. Silly post Goppy.
Politically minded Conservative wanted to turn Viet Nam into a parking lot. You have that one backwards Goppy. North Viet Nam generals a few years later admitted that they had lost the war and the liberals here forced the US out. Remember that Kennedy killed the weapons and ammunition for South Viet Nam as we were getting ready to leave and he is still proud of that. Result - the killing fields and hundreds of thousands in concentration camps. The compassionate liberals brought that to Viet Nam and Cambodia. Are you forgetting that little fact Goppy? Liberals empowered the losing side to try and create that parking lot. What a thing to be proud of Goppy. Turning a won war into a loss and all that death and prisoners that went with that.
You are hilarious about the Republicans being hypocritical. The Modern liberals ranted all the time about the Bush deficits claiming that they were bankrupting the country. Average Bush deficit $200billion plus. Obama wants to spend a $2 trillion deficit plus and $1 trillion deficit forever. Not a peep out of the liberals. Then Goppy has the gall to talk about Republican hypocrisy when the liberals have cornered the market this year.
What is the matter Goppy? Do you have amnesia? -

From the point of view of someone who doesn't share all of your views, it does seem that liberals care more about who's doing the crime as opposed to the nature of the crime itself, the severity, etc. That's what I've never understood about you all. For the last three decades (and probably a lot longer), right wing violence has been a rarity. Murders, rapes, beatings, robberies etc, all fueled in part by bad times, by the way, have mostly been committed over the last half century by groups that have nothing to do with the "right wing."
Reply
It also seems to me that liberals don't know much about the groups they berate. You're all segregated into enclaves with like minded individuals who only learn about others from what they've been told by television, the Internet and other sources that don't accurately represent the rest of us.

The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) has claimed responsibility for setting several fires, including a July 1998 fire on a ski resort in Vail, Colorado, that caused $12 million in damage.
The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) has been connected to break-ins, thefts, and vandalism at animal-research laboratories on the West Coast and to a March 1999 firebombing of circus trailers in Franklin Township, New Jersey. Most of the 600 crimes that the ALF and ELF are suspected of committing since 1996 have not been classified as acts of terrorism.
