No they didn't use the word bet, but I'll bet they were all hoping that the Obama Administration would somehow fail to effectively resuce the captain. It cetainly appeared to me that they could hardly contain their glee at the possiblity that President Obama would get blamed for doing nothing.........
In reality it is just another example of the lack of morals in the pseudo-conservative movement where nothing is as important as denigrating the opposition. The Long and Hidden History of the U.S in Somalia
.... From the late 1970s until just before Siad Barre's overthrow in early 1991, the U.S. sent hundreds of millions of dollars of arms to Somalia in return for the use of military facilities which had been originally constructed for the Soviets. These bases were to be used to support American military intervention in the Middle East. The consequences of U.S. military support for the Barre regime on the Somali people was deemed of little importance by American policymakers. The U.S. government ignored warnings throughout the 1980s by Africa specialists, human rights groups and humanitarian organizations that continued American aid to the dictatorial government of Siad Barre would eventually plunge Somalia into chaos.
These predictions proved tragically accurate. During the nearly fifteen years of support by the United States and Italy, thousands of civilians were massacred at the hands of Barre's increasingly authoritarian regime. Full-scale civil war erupted in 1988 and the repression increased still further, with clan leaders in the northern third of the country declaring independence to escape government persecution. In greatly centralizing his government's control, Barre severely weakened traditional structures in Somali society which had kept civil order for many years. To help maintain his grip on power, Barre played different Somali clans against each other, sowing the seeds of the fratricidal chaos to come, which in turn would contribute to mass starvation and spur the ill-fated humanitarian intervention by the United States in 1992.-

But this "issue" will be addressed more as a question of whether Obama has now proved his "strength of character" in "defending" America, rather than addressing the underlying farce of the failure of our imperialism. The connection to Afghanistan or Pakistan will occur to only a few.

Hype, we could go on and on, country after country, where our hands have been hacked off in the cookie jar when it comes to geopolitical politics. The problem of piracy can't be hung on this current administration. As your comment shows the deterioration of the country of Somalia has been ongoing. Needless to say obama's handling of the situation was outstanding. In addition I am starting to see in some areas an opening up of dialogue with countries by this administration on a level that is unprecedented. Cuba for instance. It's been 50 years since there has been any meaningful dialogue between the U.S. and Cuba. It's a start. Does it right the wrongs that have been done in covert ops in so many countries, NO! I think trying to lay that on any one or even as many as 5 presidents would be a daunting and formidable task. Commerce and trade are the underpinnings of a stable economy and a peaceful world. For the Somalians to lash out and threaten those pinnings is bringing more trouble than what it's worth to them. There are far better propaganda techniques to grab the world's attention than to indulge themselves in international crimes. Quite frankly, I don't even think the pirates understand the seriousness of what they are doing and all the possible ramifications. They are just a simple gang of criminals, with no political backing. They could possibly bring a a vengeance on their country that would make the suffering they are experiencing now seem like child's play. If a military intervention occurs, the same mistakes of before will not be repeated.

GLee - I do not know of any lib who is calling the killing of 3 pirates murder. I certainly do not. I am sad that in their poverty they had to turn to crimes like piracy. But they did commit criminal acts. They deserve to be punished and in the situation of imminent danger to Cpt. Phillips had to be shot.

I give him credit for taking a hard stance and getting the job done and I hope he will do this in the future. Way to go Mr. President. I believe in giving credit when it is due. In 1991, the government of Somalia collapsed. Its nine million people have been teetering on starvation ever since – and the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country's food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.
Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died....
.... At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia’s seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish stocks by over-exploitation - and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300 million worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalia’s unprotected seas.
The local fishermen have suddenly lost their livelihoods, and they are starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: “If nothing is done, there soon won’t be much fish left in our coastal waters.”
This is the context in which the men we are calling “pirates” have emerged. Everyone agrees they were ordinary Somalian fishermen who at first took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least wage a “tax” on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coast Guard of Somalia - and it’s not hard to see why.
In a surreal telephone interview, one of the pirate leaders, Sugule Ali, said their motive was “to stop illegal fishing and dumping in our waters … We don’t consider ourselves sea bandits. We consider sea bandits [to be] those who illegally fish and dump in our seas and dump waste in our seas and carry weapons in our seas.” William Scott would understand those words.
No, this doesn’t make hostage-taking justifiable, and yes, some are clearly just gangsters - especially those who have held up World Food Program supplies. But the “pirates” have the overwhelming support of the local population for a reason. The independent Somalian news site WardherNews conducted the best research we have into what ordinary Somalis are thinking - and it found 70 percent “strongly supported the piracy as a form of national defense of the country’s territorial waters.”-

Did we expect starving Somalians to stand passively on their beaches, paddling in our nuclear waste, and watch us snatch their fish to eat in restaurants in London and Paris and Rome? We didn’t act on those crimes - but when some of the fishermen responded by disrupting the transit corridor for 20 percent of the world’s oil supply, we begin to shriek about “evil.” If we really want to deal with piracy, we need to stop its root cause - our crimes - before we send in the gunboats to root out Somalia’s criminals.

They even took in escaped African slaves and lived with them as equals. The pirates showed “quite clearly - and subversively - that ships did not have to be run in the brutal and oppressive ways of the merchant service and the Royal navy.” This is why they were popular, despite being unproductive thieves.....

Postscript: Some commentators seem bemused by the fact that both toxic dumping and the theft of fish are happening in the same place - wouldn’t this make the fish contaminated? In fact, Somalia’s coastline is vast, stretching 3,300km (over 2,000 miles). Imagine how easy it would be - without any coast guard or army - to steal fish from Florida and dump nuclear waste on California, and you get the idea. These events are happening in different places but with the same horrible effect: death for the locals and stirred-up piracy. There’s no contradiction.-

An Iranian blogger sent to Tehran's infamous Evin prison last month for allegedly insulting Iran's religious leaders and agitating against the government has died under questionable circumstances.
Omidreza Mirsayafi had consistently denied the charges against him, saying his blog posts were not political in nature, while relatives and a fellow inmate are casting doubt on the official cause of death.
The doctor told them how to treat him, asked them to send him to a city hospital. But they ignored the doctor and said [Mirsayafi] was faking his illness. The doctor said, 'his heartbeat is 40 per minute, you can't fake that.' But they sent the doctor out of the room."

No one wanted Obama to come out and reveal any plans. No one wanted him to be like "right now snipers are trained in on the pirates heads". A simple "This is unacceptable and our military will do everything in it's power to bring Captain Phillips home safely." would have been great.

Also remember that the military is rarely sent in to free a private U.S. Citizen that is being held hostage. The FBI is almost always the first responder, domestic or international.

Maersk is not a U.S, company, the global headquarters are in Denmark. Where was the Danish Navy?
When one ventures overseas, US citizen or not, you are basically on your own. I know, I do it regularly. This Captain was merely a US citizen working for a foreign company at his own risk.
What I said about Obama stands. Any statement by him regarding what people of your ilk think he should have said(after the fact) would merely have been turned against him and been fruitless at best.
Piracy on the high seas is an international matter and needs to be handled by all affected, not just the US.

No. The people I fight are other martial artists throughout the system. And if it comes down to using force to resolve a situation I am more likely to pull my gun and hold the perps until law enforcement arrive than I am to fight. If I have to fight and do not tell my opponent that I am a trained fighter I can go to jail. Just as I can go to jail for killing a person even if it is self defense.

Sweet. I just got rid of all my kel tecs after they kept jamming on me at the range. Have you had any problems with yours? They seem to be hit or miss. Both of mine jammed and one of my buddies jammed but I have 2 other friends who swear by theirs. Anyways I keep an IWI Eagle or a PX4 Storm on me at all times. In my truck I often have my M4 as I have the best truck for it. I constructed a holster of sorts for an M4 under the rear bench seat. Very easily accessible.

no .. I have 3 .. 2 380s and a p9.. the 9 jammed until I shot a couple hundred rounds.. none since.. I also have a PLR -- 223.. .. I carry that in my bug out bag, in a locked box behind the seat in my truck.. It's a nice compromise.. could be used for hunting if necessary and great for an urban setting.. and with the sling worn under a vest of jacket and is fairly discrete...

Obama went through a thoughtful process. The first option is ALWAYS a period of negotiation to find out if there are solutions without loss of life.
At the same time, Obama and his advisers quietly made preparations for a military offensive WITHOUT broadcasting to the world and the pirates what those preparations are.
Then you trust the commanders and advisers who are on the scene to make the final decisions since you trust they are competent and have a good plan to follow.
From news reports, it appears that sharpshooters were flown in and airdropped onto the deck of theUSS Bainbridge. Then the tow line pulling the lifeboat was quietly reeled in so that the boat was much closer to the destroyer. This made the shots much easier and certain.
All this takes time and planning. You do not want to put the pirates on high alert since that would make them much more dangerous to deal with and Cpt. Phillips life in greater danger. As a matter of fact, if you make the pirates feel like they have the upper hand, you would be giving them a false sense of security and they would let their guard down.
It seems like Obama DID care, but he was also very smart about it. You, Glenn Beck, Newt Gingrich all owe Obama a huge apology. You don't know sh*t about hostage negotiations, rescue tactics, and keeping your collective mouths shut.-

Where do you get that? SECNAV asked for the ability to use force and Obama signed his request. After that it was the Captain of the USS Bainbridge who was in charge of the situation. Our first response (Which was all over the media) was to send in the nearest Navy vessels. That was before Obama even signed SECNAV's request. You're making this sound like Obama was hands on with every decision and you are wrong. He received real time updates and other than signing his name to SECNAV's request for the use of force he had nothing to do with the response. Should I congratulate him for staying out of the way?
How could the pirates feel like they have the upper hand while sitting in a life boat staring at a Navy Destroyer?

I guess Obama should have flown over. Landed by chopper on the ship wearing a flight suit. Raised a bull horn and asked the pirates if they could hear him. Tell the pirates we would get them dead or alive. Then he could have made a speech congratulating himself in front of a mission accomplished banner. That would have been doing something.

Does this justify their converting to piracy and endangering the lives of crew and merchant marine in order to make money? These pirates are now aligned with warlords and possibly al Qaeda who reap some of the cash.
So when does self defense become criminal? At what point does protecting coastline become piracy?

The fringe appears to carry much more intensity and passion for what they believe, which would definitely make them a more loyal listener/viewer group. Study up on how the economy works a little more. Do a bit of research about banking regulations and the way debt is traded as a speculative venture.
If after reading up a bit, you still believe the problems of our economy were created since 2007, you have no hope of ever understanding complex systems.
As for quelling dissent and calling critics un-American, that was (and is still) done by actual elected officials, not just by a few Internet bloggers, after 9/11 and for the rest of Bush's term.

I am not defending what much of what went on for the last eight years -- or twelve years or even 40 years, but the invective you spew is really quite over the top.
How on earth do you propose that the nation "heal" and we come together when all you can see is the worst possible motives for anyone with whom you disagree?
Yes, absolutely there are evil, greedy and black-hearted republicans and conservatives, just as there are evil, greedy and black-hearted democrats. But the majority of those on BOTH sides of the aisle want all the same things for this country and themselves -- they just believe that there are different paths to get there.
Glenn Beck is an idiot -- I'll grant you that. I can't stand to watch him, but if you notice -- especially on the rest of the clips -- those soundbites were heavily edited and taken out of context. And STILL did not constitute the claim of the headline -- that they were betting against Obama.
I am estatic that that captain was safely rescued. I'm even MORE estatic that the hostage negotiators got nowhere and we didn't pay for his rescue -- which appeared to be the way it was going to go down until the Navy actually took him out of there.
I was quite upset that when the captain managed to free himself, no one was paying attention so that he got captured again.
I am baffled by the report that WHILE THE GUY WAS STILL A HOSTAGE, the navy got close enough to the lifeboat to tether it to the destroyer (we were towing it!) but still allowed the guy to be held hostage.
So, I'm sorry if my questions about this whole operation doesn't rise to the level of unquestioning adulation and support of Obama that you seem to require, but that's just the way it is.-

It is true that I have disagreed with Obama, Clinton and most of the rest of the democrats, but that doesn't mean that I automatically agreed with Bush, but anyone who disagrees with you is automatically a lock-step Bush-bot with a totally black soul and no redeeming qualities whatsoever -- (I really do find it hard to believe that you would be so rigid in real life, but that's how your posts come off).
Now, you have not heard me say ONE WORD against Obama's motives. You have NEVER heard me say that Obama is an evil-doer intent on destroying the country. You have NEVER heard me call Obama "Obummer" or Obama bin Laden or any of the derogatory names many used.

In the midst of this hostage situation, instead of supporting OUR president and letting him do his job (which he did), all you cons were harping and carrying on about his failure and wishing him to fail. What a bunch of losers. You show no love of country, no wisdom in keeping your mouths shut, no rallying behind the president. Then you blame the libs and Obama for not healing the country???
You really know nothing about the whole situation. The lifeboat ran out of fuel and it was drifting closer to shore. If it got to shore and the captain imprisoned there, then the captain would be in even greater danger and rescue would be infinitely harder. So the navy offered to tow the boat to open water. How they convinced the pirates I don't know - probably for "safety."
The captain tried to escape, but he only got a few yards away when the pirates fired on him with automatic guns and forced him to turn back. The navy ship kept a distance because the pirates fired several times and the navy did not want to put the captain at any more risk from the trigger happy pirates.
The rescue operation apparently started the previous night when the Bainbridge quietly reeled in the lifeboat closer to get better shots. The pirates apparently did not realize they were being reeled in until it was too late.
On top of everything else, Obama did not claim glory and adulation. hHe deflected all glory onto the rescuers and navy personnel that were on scene. Can you imagine Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld in the same situation? They would be crowing to the high heavens about how they defeated terrorism and how bold their decisions were.
So you can pack your whole cynical smirkiness and all-knowing disdain and shove it

why did it take so long? what was it, a week? not really all that long. First, they brought in experts in dealing with hostage situations (FBI), then they managed to bring one pirate on board while bringing food and clothing over (helping the American, getting first hand intel, reducing the number of targets, and gaining their trust), then they convinced the pirates to accept a tow (securing their position in calm waters in the lee of the ship), and then they killed the pirates and saved the hostage.
and still Obama hasn't taken any ego time in front of the camera.

Cons are merely p'od because Obama didn't give them any statement they could seize on and distort to their advantage. The best they can come up with is that he was "silent" for a few days. their Super-Power Patrons"). According to British journalist Kevin
Dowling, Indyk next surfaced in Israel, as a "media consultant" to
Israel's Likud Prime Ministers, Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir.
In 1982, Indyk came to America, ostensibly on a six-month sabbatical
from his duties with the Office of the Israeli Prime Minister. Based
out of Cornell University, Indyk formed a research department for the
America-Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the "official"
Israeli lobby in the United States. Within a year, AIPAC had ponied up
$100,000 to Indyk to hive off the research unit as the Washington
Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP). Pro-Israel luminaries in
Washington, including former Vice President Walter Mondale, former
Secretaries of State George Shultz and Alexander Haig, and former
United Nations Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick, were among the initiating
members of WINEP's advisory board, according to Dowling's Sept. 27,
2000 account of the Indyk counterintelligence probe.-

Now hold on. My wife is serving in the Navy and didn't think the skipper had a chance. Not because Obama is so incompetent or that he wouldn't actually allow them them to splash the pirates. We both felt that in a confined space like the life boat is, the chances of being able to take then out before they had a chance to kill him were much greater. I'm very pleased to see the captain safe.

One other question, will Barrack insist on a trial for the last pirate? Was he read his rights? Was a lawyer offered to him? I personally feel they should hold a short trial and hang him. However, the president wants trials for the Gitmo folks with all of the pomp so why wouldn't this guy receive the same rights?-

It is great that the SEALS came through in a big way to save the heroic Captain. Obama can take credit, he certainly would have been blamed (but not accept it) if things went wrong.

Obama should be glad he "inherited" a well-trained, can-do military, right on down through the captain of the ship, the commander of the SEALS, and the guys who pulled the triggers. Credit to the Merchant Marines and their brave captain as well.
Does taking these three pirates out make us safer, since the pirates are vowing revenge?
The confrontation with the pirates is just beginning. It is going to get complicated with world reaction, ongoing incidents, other hostages, who knows what? I hope it continues to go well for us.
Let's hope bringing the 4th pirate back to the States for trial doesn't end up as a circus. This pirate may only be 16 years old. Los of issues and complications here for conservatives and liberals to clash on.

Frankly, I do not see evidence of that assumption. Obama has already proven that he is willing to admit a mistake when he makes one...nor did he ask for or take any credit in dealing with this hostage crisis, though he deserves it.
Most of us can remember Obama being criticized for saying, 'I screwed up' when Daschle withdrew his nomination due to tax problems.-

Yeah. That'd be cheap. Along with the trial, incarceration, and rehabilitation that liberals say we owe the captured Somali teenager who by all rights should be fish food by now.
We all know how the final stages of this rescue went down. So the question is, were we fed a line, as I hope we were, or did we just hand the Somali pirates their bullet-point list of how NOT to hold an American hostage? (xqz the pun)

I thought it was ironic that Gingrich brought up the fact that there have been 66 incidents of piracy since Obama took office. How many occurred during the Bush reign? Hundreds? This isn't a new phenomenon. Bush waited until 2 weeks before Obama took office to form a piracy 'task force'.

Obanus gave the order in writing which is required by law, he had nothing to do with rescuing this man even though every news agency would have you think he orchestrated the hole thing. He wants to destroy the defense department and deflate the military in a time when a strong defense is the one thing this country needs.
