The Georgian trap »
Posted By jovial 10 months ago in Political NewsFor five straight days, thousands of Georgians have filled the capital of Tbilisi demanding the resignation of President Mikheil Saakashvili. Saakashvili is under fire for his handling of the August 2008 war with Russia. Unfortunately I couldn't watch the video because of sleepers nearby.

Nor do I really have a handle on the Georgia scene.
Nevertheless I'd be willing to bet that you're on the right track when you suggest that this is part of a bigger play about much more vital issues - and I very much doubt that we have seen the end of this story.-

Gam, the story relates a tale of PNAC being implicated in a bid to start a conflict with Russia in order to boost the prospect of McCain becoming president. During the debates McCain took the lead in condemning Russia for it's offensive in Georgia. It seems that the links between the Georgian president and McCain ran deeper than thought originally. We all knew back then that one of the big players in the Georgian political scene had direct links with the McCain campaign. McCain's top adviser was a paid lobbyist for Georgia. If you get a chance, do view the video.

The immediate demonizing of Russia concurrent with all the praise and support for the small country known as Georgia, where the oil pipeline passes through, never rested well with me. It has that distinct smell of propaganda and political marketing.

History has increasingly become easier to predict since the depletion of the world's oil resources have become a vital issue. In each and every geographical place on this earth, where there are oil pipelines or oil resources you can count on corruption and subterfuge. -

A few years back Georgians were in the streets supporting him, also days after the Russian occupation. Georgian is sitting in a poor situation now and the only ones happy are once again the Russians. The Russians had their eye on this part of Georgia for a long time and for a long time beforte the war they had been giving those in that region russian passport. This was also the reason for the quick massive military action.

Well perhaps one should at least remember that Georgia was part of Russia for close to three centuries (long before the USSR existed) before the Russians negotiated their independence. The present struggle comes because parts of the region DID NOT WANT to be part of independent Georgia and fought a war of independence in the early 1990s to gain their independence from Georgia.

Your short term history doesn't address the complexity of the situation.
As for candidates, the opposition to Saakashvili has been strong from the beginning and in fact claims to have won the last elections.
In any case, it is certainly for Georgians and not the US to decide who their politicians should be. In other words, all the US money flocking into Georgia from neocons and others to buy corrupt political power should be banned.
