AOL Appeals To Users To Visit Propeller Again »
Posted By JessicaLaurie 7 months, 2 weeks ago in NewsAOL’ s Propeller launched in 2006 as a “ Digg Killer” - a Digg like site with editorial oversight that had massive netscape.com traffic directed to it. All those Netscape users were used to seeing a standard news page, though, and didn’ t quite know what to do at the new site.

Does aol understand that they have to spend money to make money?
I can understand how a new sign-up might not stick around depending on the day. The site can be a bit frustrating at times. Stats not working properly - lots of 404s. One of the comments stated 'bad web design'. We who have been here from the beginning know that the devs have done the best job possible with what they've had to work with.
I'm one of the lucky ones that has had a great experience at propeller. I would hate to see it go. -

Hi guys. This is the first in a series of e-mail notifications we are working on. In the previous version of Propeller, the Daily Activity Report was a bit hit with many members, and we would like to bring that back, as well as providing a way to receive great stories and James' Week in Review via e-mail. I'll be writing up a blog post on it when more of the pieces are out there. If you look now at your settings page, you'll see a "Manage Notifications" link, where you can already opt in to a few notifications.

Thanks for the encouragement. -

If it wasn't for Propeller I dont think that I would bother that much to be on the computer, I look forward everyday to hurry and get on Propeller, I have told my family and friends about it and they dont know what they are missing. I love propeller and everyone on propeller seems to me as if they are all part of my family. I would be a sad lady if it wasn't for propeller. I mean it I love yous all.

It's not all just because of AOL.

You have to look back around ten years ago and more. Web portals were all over the place. AOL, MSN, Yahoo, Netscape, Lycos (Now that I think about it, we have a "champagne economy", with bubbles going all the time) and they prospered when people couldn't even figure out how to connect their computer to the phone.
Things have matured a bit. Just look at the differences in where those companies have gone and what they have done.
Unfortunately, If they want to make the place "bigger" there will be a huge trade-off.... More varied content and the vapid Babylon of the digg-esque, or a giant sterile monolith of time-warner vapid information, and who knows what to get people to come here.
Unless they have new ideas, the head of what owns aol will expect much more from it than they are willing to put into it. And it's very late in the game.

For all the grumbling I have done over the years, I truly enjoy Propeller.com in all the various forms it has had from Netscape to now. To James and Tom, keep up the awesome work and I am definitely looking forward to the continued improvement. Thanks much!

I love Propeller. And as one of the "old dogs" I've seen some things happen that I'm not stoked about, but I firmly believe that much of what has transpired over the last several months has been positive.

One thing I've noticed, is that while many sites have an automatic "share" with such sites as Digg and Reddit they do not with Propeller. Why not? We rock over here and people need to know that. Now, I know it isn't like Digg where you can be a giant assclown without people giving you the smackdown, but that's part of the beauty of this site.
More people need to know what it's like to take a spin on Propeller. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors and tell your enemies that there is only ONE great social networking site that makes sense.
PROPELLER FOREVER!!! -

Things kind of tanked when AOL took it over (the whole AOL brand isn't very confidence-inspiring right now) and changed what was kind of a public-directed meritocracy.

Sure, the so-called Navigators had their own individual agendas, but when they left, so did lots of other members
Then they dramatically changed the look to put less information and more advertising, so you'd have to go through more pages to get as much information as you had before.
They have to work hard to "prop" up a failing model with a declining user base and a dramatically aging demographic.
The whole "portal" thingy is so last millenium. I think it would be a change to see them actually drag people to this site. Everything would certainly be shaken up. -

I enjoy reading the stories and have come to accept the new propeller but i have to say there are way too manny radical republicans/democrates. It seems those are the only ones that stayed. Many political stores become just a back and forth sh*t shows that really brings down the site.
