Conservationists tried twice to release Waikiki back to the wild, but he kept returning to human habitations, which were much more familiar to him than the forest. So they decided to take him deeper into the jungle, which is where we met the now 10-year-old orangutan. NBC News producers spent almost a week with them in Sumatra, reporting on an ambitious new project to reclaim one of the island’s last areas of protected forest for the orangutan, which is critically endangered here.
