I know ... you like the Modern Republicans because they DEMAND that we remain a SUV culture and send our national treasury to Saudi Arabia.
Reply
Well ... Republicans have ALWAYS been in bed with the Arabs.
I say ... kick the Arabs out of our bed and develop alternative fuel resources!
.
Of course, I realize that my fellow Christian Conservatives will resent this comment. They RESENT Government limiting their freedoms to buy the biggest, gas guzzling vehicles possible so they can empower Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela.

I have been talking about this with my friends for years (being someone who doesn't drive as result of epilepsy)

the biggest cost to airlines is commuter flights, nock them out and replace with high speed rail corridors from boston to miami, chicago to new orleans, seattle to san diego, san francisco to new york, and san diego to atlanta. (with stops between obviously)
let the govt own the rail and private enterprise own the cars and rent time on the rails.
add to that improved urban transit systems with the same govt/private partnership and we got ourselves a job creating, economy stimulating, green infrastructure for the 21st century. -

Driving my dad home from a trip to Sacramento last week, he pointed out the longest freight train I've ever seen. After several miles we realized we'd never catch up to the engine. As an accident many miles up slowed us to 25mph on the interstate, that train just flew by us. The huge cargo containers would have put scores of 18 wheelers on the roads. I agree that trains are an excellent idea for transport, not to mention travel. I'd rather ride a train than fly.

MY GOD ... it's like this president feels like we can be every bit as innovative and forward thinking as the rest of the Industrialized world.
Reply
Wow ... I never knew throwing over the Dreary Ideology of Modern Republicanism could result in such dramatic, positive thinking about our nation.
Imagine, just 6 months ago, we were led to believe by Republicans that ...'America and Americans are stupid and our nation can't do anything but build weapons systems' and provide welfare for the wealthy.
Now - we can prove America is every bit as innovative as the rest of the world.
Thank God we've finally cast off the CAN'T DO Millstone of Modern Republicanism.

"One small bit of information that most people don’t know, even in our Department of Energy: a large majority of the nuclear waste from France is actually shipped to the U.S.," Goswami said.
"It’s stored in South Carolina. That’s because when initially the French started building nuclear reactors, the U.S. was suspicious of the French, and said ‘hey, you don’t need to keep that nuclear waste over there, we’ll store it for you.’" -

PARIS, Dec 17 (Tierramérica) - France sends thousands of tonnes of nuclear waste to Russia each year, but the details are shielded by a decree of "national security" in order to block debate on the issue, says the environmental watchdog group Greenpeace.
"This kind of traffic of nuclear waste between Western Europe and Russia has gone on for more than three decades already, and allows the big nuclear energy companies, like Electricité de France, to store their radioactive waste at extremely contaminated sites in Siberia," Greenpeace-France spokesman Grégory Gendre told Tierramérica. -

Paris, France — Greenpeace today revealed that France's iconic sparkling wine, Champagne, is threatened by radioactive contamination leaking from a nuclear waste dumpsite in the region. Low levels of radioactivity have already been found in underground water less than 10 km from the famous Champagne vineyards. -

"Areva's hyper-active public relations department has made much of recent orders to build two new reactors in China. But it's now begging France's taxpayers for some $4 billion in short term bailout money, and may need still another $6 billion more to pay for investments in uranium mines, fuel production and heavy manufacturing ventures." -

Hmm.. let me see if I can twist this back to the story at hand.....

This is an article about the Energy Policy Act of 2005..
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic...
The bill's biggest winner was probably the nuclear industry, which received billions of dollars in subsidies and tax breaks covering almost every facet of operations. There were subsidies for research into new reactor designs, "fusion energy," small-particle accelerators and reprocessing nuclear waste, which would reverse current U.S. policy. Rep. Ralph Hall (R-Tex.) even inserted a $250,000 provision for research into using radiation to refine oil.
The bill also included $2 billion for "risk insurance" in case new nuclear plants run into construction and licensing delays. And nuclear utilities will be eligible for taxpayer-backed loan guarantees of as much as 80 percent the cost of their plants. -

It's a great idea, but that is about it. It is another way to look like a "progressive" thinker, great programs, great projects, etc until they have to be financed and built. A high speed rail system would never be cost effective. Our country is too spread out to make it efficient. If you dont believe this ride a Greyhound bus from city to city. A train altough faster would have to make so many stops to draw enough paying passengers it would take forever to get anywhere. Fly or drive is still the most cost effective way to travel, and you pay for what YOU use, not to keep a goverment rail system employed by too many overpaid goverment workers. Look at the postal system, its broke and then look at UPS. Privately owned by employees and super efficient.

Until the person riding the train can get into his own car at the end of the train ride the idea is a bust. Everyone wants to be able to get around at their destination. the cost of renting a car is what makes driving long distance the money breaker in the decision process. Add to that that most train stations are in a bad section of town. Only people from New York get along without owning a car, and can walk the distances between places to go. Who wants to get off a train take a taxi/bus to a auto rental place and pay through the nose? Its why AMTRAC is a bust. Same problem.

It's a nice idea. It's also one that has been floating around for decades in this country. The problem is one of scale. The president uses France as an example of implementing this technology. France has a size of 643,427 sq km. The United States has a size of 9,161,923 sq km.

Because of the shear size and distance between city centers, the concept of high speed rail is highly unfeasible.
We can't maintain the highway, air, and rail system as it is. How are we going to maintain an aditional system? -

Yes, so is almost every great endeavor before it's accomplished. Modern marvels exist because men and women of vision attempted the impossible. The naysayer crowd is still sitting in the cave in awe of fire. The rest of us are embracing a future outside of that cave. Welcome to our future.
