Human Tide Of Misery Flees The Anarchy Of Somalia - The Independent »
Posted By dissent 7 months, 2 weeks ago in NewsAs the world follows the escapades of the country's pirates, civilians are fleeing the anarchy on land, creating the world's biggest refugee camp.
These people are proof of the human cost of the accelerating collapse of Somalia, yet their fate attracts nothing like the global interest that surrounds Somali piracy and its threat to commerce. The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) that runs Dadaab urgently needs new money from international donors and new land from the Kenyan government. Neither has been forthcoming. Somalia's tragedy in a nutshell -
The USA pumped 50 million a year in aid and arms into Somalia to prop up a corrupt and unpopular dictator (it was a cold war thing, to mess with the USSR.)
Eventually, the central government folded anyway, leaving only various militias and warlords armed to the teeth both with US weapons, and the weapons the USSR had supplied to the other side.
US and Soviet meddling having reduced Somalia to complete chaos, we stepped back and said "Whoa, check out those primitive MFers."
In its way, not much different from the Iraq or Afghanistan treatment. Bomb a third world country back to the stone age, then point at the conduct of the survivors and conclude that they are too primitive, tribal, etc to govern themselves without our help. -
