"The whole notion was that if we showed courtesy or opened up dialogue with governments that had previously been hostile to us, that that somehow would be a sign of weakness," Obama said, recalling his race for the White House and challenging his critics today."

"The American people didn't buy it," Obama said. "And there's a good reason the American people didn't buy it — because it doesn't make sense." -

..so you don't think he is reaching out to us? You must be one of those deceived by Faux Fox News and Oxy Rush.... which means you don't think for yourself anyway. If you can't think for yourself and know who you are, then it makes no difference if Barack tries to help you.... you will always see it otherwise! Move out of America, as you don't have the conscience or the open mind of an American!

I feel we have seriously ignored our hemisphere and are at risk of losing any chance to forge a good relationoship with South American countries. What ever happend to the Pan American Union? If I were Obama, I'd try to get Colin Powell to become the good will Embassador with our neighbors....Chavez might be a Marxist\Socialist but he did't hand the fortunes of his citizens over the profiteers in the oil industry.

There is a distinction here between Iran as a government, and Iran as an assemblage of people. Calling an entire country 'evil' does nothing to help the young Iranians who are far more moderate and America-friendly than their stalwart leadership, in fact, it reinforces any government propaganda that states the US in anti-Islam in general and anti-Iran in specific.

Listen to the liberals espouse the foolish idea that countries with a diametrically opposed view to the US can be negotiated with. These foolish people ignore history. Chamberlain went to Hitler and came back with a treaty claiming, "Peace in our time." Why do these people and Obama think they can get ANY change out of these people. Look at the history of Israel. Since its inception it has fought wars just to survive. When the Muslim countries failed at outright warfare they haf resorted to Muslim terrorists. These terrorists have as their main beliefs as stated in their charters that three things are the only solution for them.
Reply
1. Destroy Israel
2. Kill ALL Jews
3. Install Sharia law in the region
This is the terrorists that the liberals keep telling Israel to make peace with. They are blinded to the fact that it is impossible to make a real peace with these groups.
The same hold true with many of the countries that hate the US. There is nothing we can say or do short of letting them do what they want that will keep them happy. Many of them want to destroy the US. So liberals how do you make nice to people who have that as their ultimate objective? Remember that the Muslim concept that war is deception is used by these people as well. Treaties mean nothing to them except to bide their time until the time is right. Muhammad did that as an example that Muslims and others follow. -

I hope that Obama is correct. It would truly be a better world if everyone would just get along.

It seems to me that Carter tried this same approach with the Soviet Union. Wasn't there some kind of quote from him shortly before his defeat where he admitted that perhaps the Soviets weren't completely honest with him in their dealings?
But, of cource, the dictators of South and Central America, as well as those in the Middle East, have a much better reputation for honesty, integrity and just plain common decency than anyone from the Soviet Union ever had, right? -

My hope is that Obama/Clinton will point out that aggressive, irrational stances are no longer palatable as a diplomatic strategy and that we as a nation refuse to indulge in such nonsense. If Iran's leadership wants to play the bully instigator while losing the ear of the world, they will continue to isolate themselves from their own people who will increasingly view them as a significant part of the problem.

Obama would be an idiot to play into the hands of those who desire increasing polarization in the region.
