Can Texas Go It Alone? »

Posted By JamesMarcus 7 months ago in News

Deep in the heart of Texas, there seems to be a lurking urge to--well, go it alone. Residents of the Lone Star State have always been an individualistic lot, and there is some history to take into account: along with Hawaii, Texas is one of two American states ever to have existed as a sovereign nation. Still, it's hard to know what to make of Governor Rick Perry's recent rumblings about secession. As reported in The Dallas Morning News, his comments have gotten a mixed response.

"The empathy Perry has shown this week to those spitting-mad-at-Washington secessionists had newscaster Geraldo Rivera calling him 'grossly irresponsible' and ripe for impeachment," writes News reporter Christy Hoppe, "while former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said that Perry was being a righteous governor 'standing up for the sovereignty of his state.' What is certain is that Perry has struck a chord. And it is aimed at Texas' ultimate mythology--that because it began as a country, by gum, it could go it alone again."

What do Perry's constituents think of his breakaway talk? On Twitter, at least one Texan sounded alarmed. "I saw a sea of white people at tea parties," said @yves1960. "Here in Texas things were radical. Our nutty gov. was ranting secession!" There was a similar response from a transplanted Texan, @tomthedog: "Trust me, as a Cali boy moved to Texas, it's the non-celebs who are much more embarrassing (like Rick 'Pro-Secession' Perry)."

    Quite frankly, who cares?

Texas can't and isn't going to secede from the Union. It's ludicrous.

The 25% of Texans who want to secede are the ones that would always tell the liberals "love it or leave it." LOL! The only problem is: they don't love it and won't leave.

If 25% are seceding, isn't that more like moving? :-)

A pure ploy by the Great State of Texas. Besides that, the other 56 states need them!

"Libs in CA or NY wouldn't want to secede because they are pathetic, weak people who believe in crackpot Marxist ideas that are destroying them (which they deserve), are generally pantywaists, are already broke, and don't have weapons anyway, or else would be too cowardly anyway like you."

Like Washington...things do not always end the way the majority votes...the decisions are made with money, oil, mineral wealth, etc. Oh, there is a good source there ready for work...the ones that always end in the fast food places, etc. They have all they want...plus someone to do it. lol A real Texan would just have to laugh...I lived in Houston and remember the cops getting tired of giving out DUI's...they had a fight coming. That was just another time the majority enjoyed their two drink limit...driving or doing anything. After all, it gets hot there...and work gets that much harder.
Washington wants a super race of people...that work until they drop dead! Slavery you know...has been around for a long time...wait until factories are fully equipped with robotics...then what will we do? We the humans? Look now and you can see a pattern...a direction...

I think Texas could easily make it alone. Maybe they will lead the way. Would be VERY interesting.

I posted this comment on another thread on the same subject - but it deserves reposting on this thread--

The state that gave us Bushwhacker, rampant executions, Ron Paul & an long list of nut jobs -- good riddance - don't let the door kick you in the ass when you leave

Wow - I can't wait! This glorious fundamentalist Christian theocracy which suppresses minorities and women and outlaws abortion, premarital sex and contraception, in which an oligarchy of the filthy rich rules over the disenfranchised and disproportionate underclass, will give the "Right" what they have always wanted. Welcome to Saudi Arabia!

Texas doesn't supress minorites and women! As a Texas women myself, I am well respected! I am called mam by Texas men, and doors are open held for me, what a terrible thing! And, of course abortions are outlawed, MURDER is not something we approve of, unless we are in a life or death situation. We are proud to be known as different! Also, you better hope we don't suceed, because your cute little car needs all the gas & oil our citizens produce for it to run. We definately could survive, but the thing is we are really proud to be Texans, but also Americans. We support our soilders who are dying for YOUR freedoms. We are not backwood uneducated people as most of the "Yanks" think we are. We are Exxon - Mobil, Nasa, and the University of Texas just to name a few, we are black, white, hispanic, asian. Wanna know why we are so close to God our Father? Come on down sometime, and enjoy our summer heat. You can imagine how HOT hell is gonna be.

If 25% of Texans want to secede from the Union, then part of the State can break away from the rest and those 25% can move into that breakaway part. That Texas can break apart into up to five entities is permitted under their Constitution.

While Texas is, without doubt, the supreme state of the Union,
and would, without doubt, go on to great things as its own nation...

          - it won't;
          - it can't;
          - it doesn't really want to.

And while we can talk in these free states,
with absolute liberty about whatever we want,

          - there is no avoiding the contradiction of
conservatives who bleed blood through their eyes as
they weep for the joys and duties of patriotism,

          - and then casualy support sedition and the disolution
of their nation when the wind blows against them.

Texas, second largest state, after Alaska
          Population: 20,851,820 (2000 census)
          Area: 268601 sq.mi, 2nd Land 261914 sq. mi., 2nd Water 6687 sq.mi., 9th
          Number of counties: 254 Counties
Agriculture: Cattle, cotton, dairy products, nursery stock, poultry, sorghum, corn, wheat.
Industry: Chemical products, petroleum and natural gas, food processing, electric equipment, machinery, mining, tourism.

          source: 50states dot com

With its size, population, and natural wealth, it could easily succeed as a sovereign nation, especially without the burdens of federal oppression. (And, it would be an oil exporter to the U.S., since the U.S. won't extract its own considerable large oil reserves.)

However, the governor was probably verbalizing a lot of the frustration among Americans, similar to what we have felt with our jobs and personal situations.

Let them go. Texans have always had big mouths, let them back it up and secede...there is NOTHING so important about what Texas has that the rest of the UNION can't live without, and we can especially live without its arrogance. they'll be bankrupt in a heartbeat and begging to return to the Union as they find out just how much financial investment is involved in being your own country...ALL their borders might have to be monitored because they are now a sovereign nation, they can't manage their southern border already, how are the going to handle that? Plus ALL the commerce that comes in and out would change...now they would pay export duties on everything and import taxes would be required...YUP...let them go and they can take Waco Wackos with them, along with GW and this idiot Governor who's more invested in feeling powerful by causing a stir than in getting the job done. As they sometimes say in Texas..."All hat, no cattle"....

Texas would join the other relatively conservative states, which, similar to the civil war would include the southern states, midwest states such as Montana, N and S Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Alaska, and a few other states that would like to return to tradition and family values. About 40-45% of the country is traditional like this currently. Howver, due to the Constitution, we can't break up the Union, nor would it be recommended. Just like the Republicans running things, we will eventually get sick of the Democrats running things, will "throw the bumbs out" in a few years and will return to Republican rule. This is how democracies work.

          (And it's a good thing).

Let the soveriegn nation of Mexico buy Texas back. We will keep the oil rights, start a corporation and give every U.S. citizen an equal ammount of stock. If we do not do this we are in danger of having another Dodo come to washington, like the last one.

Texas could probably do it alone. We are proud of our State and the USA. We like a few million other citizens of the United States are tired of baling out big companies. Our government is making it too easy for the big companies to mismanage, and too easy for people to stay on Welfare and depend on the government to support them. I believe in helping people but only people that help themselves. How did we get to be a country that would prefer to support some welfare recipents that are too damn lazy to work and then not support our senior citizens after they retire. I work in healthcare and see the elderly make decisions as to whether to buy their meds or eat. How sad! So go for it TEXAS, I will move back and support it. Support your soldiers!!!!
