Posted By capj71 9 months, 3 weeks ago in Political News

Sen. Patrick Leahy was on MSNBC’s The Ed Show tonight, where he extended an invitation to former vice president Dick Cheney to testify before his Senate Judicial Committee. Leahy said that if Cheney is so concerned about torture, then he should come before Congress and answer a few questions.

Cheney supposedly WANTS more open discussion of the whole subject, in order to "air" the "PRO" side of the argument. So we can all, no doubt, expect him to TAKE UP Senator Leahy's initiative --- RIGHT??

Cheney IS right about SOMETHING at least, though: there really SHOULD be a COMPLETE ventilation of the whole "issue" --- so that "we" can ALL see and hear just who all (if anybody) actually argues "in favor" of practices that obviously violate the most elementary norms of human decency.

As for Cheney and Bush --- and indeed their whole Crackpot Cabal of NeoConMen --- I say the following:

I wonder to what extent it may have been the case that some of the more egregious outrages by fighters on the "other side" may have been MOTIVATED by the kinds of treatment being meted out to THEM in cases when THEY were held as "our" prisoners!

By the time they (for example) beheaded Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, "al-Qaeda" MUST SURELY HAVE BEEN WELL AWARE (given escapes and "extractions" of prisoners that had occurred long before then) of much of what was being done to THEIR OWN brethren in captivity. (Only "We the People" over here were "kept in the dark" with regard to that.)

So then THAT, of course, raises the question of to what extent it has to be considered, as a matter of logic, that a factor MOTIVATING such atrocities as the Pearl murder may well have been what had been and was being done by "our OWN" people!

That is, maybe at least a part of the more-or-less universal outrage at THAT horror REALLY should be directed at "our OWN" murderers and torturers --- who now come along and muster the Chutzpah to argue that "we" have some kind of bounden obligation to "support" them on the things they have done, because THEY were supposedly "protecting" "us"! But did not what they did ACTUALLY ADD to "our" risk?? TALK ABOUT CIRCULAR REASONING!!

Well, HERE is the only such "circular" reasoning that is actually valid:

What GOES ‘round --- COMES ‘round.

I wonder if Cheney would actually consider this proposition? He would undoubtedly be asked questions that would not put him a good light. He would probably go before Congress if he only had to give his side of the story.

If Cheney is brought before the court to testify...will he be put in double jeapordy?

The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides, "No person shall … be subject for the same offence [sic] to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb." This provision, known as the Double Jeopardy Clause, prohibits state and federal governments from prosecuting individuals for the same crime on more than one occasion, or imposing more than one punishment for a single offense. Each of the 50 states offers similar protection through its own constitution, statutes, and Common Law.

What Cheney would want is to declassify documents about the information obtained because of the methods used. What Obama did was release only half of the information making the debate one sided. Cheney would be bound by those unclassified documents and not be able to discuss them.

Come into my house said the spider to the fly. Stupid idea.

Where is the information about Congress giving approval for those methods to be used. There was only one congressman that opposed those methods. My guess would be McCain. The Democrats agreed with those methods and now they have amnesia.

Leahy's a crook and an idiot. If I were Cheney I would be looking for a more intellectually honest forum.

If Pat wants a forum then he should invite Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. They are the ones who caused our current financial crisis. Let's try to get them to talk about it.
