Yes we will. Everything runs out eventually. And if one says nothing other than "We will run out", that person will certainly be right sometime.

I remain something of a skeptic. When I started my work career in the early 1970's, we were being told that there was only 9 years supply of oil left. Now we are being told ... that there is only 9 years worth of oil left. One can only listen to "Wolf!" so many times before one becomes insentitive to it.
There are reasons to be headed towards alternative energy. And there are valid reasons why we should not or maybe just let it remain Jules Verne science. Personally, I've yet to see any credible anylsis that shows renewable not imposing a major cost increase; though I have seen a few that say "major cost increase today, major savings down the road". That scenario is fine if (a) you have the major money today, and (b) you can afford major cost increases until the major savings kick in. Lots of people can't.
Looking back to the furor last year's gasoline price increases caused, it strains my belief to think that a self-imposed cost increase of maybe the same order of magnitude will be greeted by joy. I know it's fashionable to mock economic motivation -- always has been--but the people for whom it's fashionable are usually the ones who can better weather the storm.

as it becomes more expensive, more supply will become available.

a lot of the losses that the oil companies have bene facing during this financial collapse is based on writing down the value of their known reserves as the value of that oil drops.-

More CRAP from the neo-cons.

A DOE report under the Bush Cheney administration said that if they drilled all available resources (offshore, Alaska Preserve, et cetera) it would have the ENORMOUS impact of reducing the cost of a barrel of oil 5-6 cents.
Time to move away from fossil fuel and into the 20th century (and beyond into the 21st). -

What about an ambitious government-funded, private contracted project that would create wind turbine facilities in key parts of the US that have a lot of wind activity or solar facilities in places that get a maximum amount of sunlight? Use the stimulus money for something tangible. These projects would be on par with projects like the Hoover Dam and the Grand Coulee Dam, to create another source for electricity.

The ambition would be good, but the results might not be so good. Though it would be very difficult to predict without testing.

It's quite possible that desert-like areas that get enormous amounts of sunlight do so because they are desert-like. The additional heat going to the ground in these areas, and warming the air, will create columns of heated air which may actually keep clouds away. If you were to harness this solar power, and prevent it from being converted into heat energy, the conditions that create the desert and lack of cloud might disappear. The previously high-sunlight area would become a high-cloud-cover area and the solar panels would be much less effective than predicted. Doubtless they would still have some effect, but unintended consequences always follow grand designs.
We are the first known species capable of adapting our environment to suit us, rather than the other way around. This is what makes us unique and great. Yet we constantly underestimate our ability to do just that - affect the environment. I'm not saying don't pursue solar power as an energy source - just that we are incredibly naive if we think it will be "free".

"We the people did long ago...yet the Government squeezed out of the majority's grasp again, and again...for no gain. They are suddenly punishing us and continually rewarding themselves for mistakes.
