Comments for Signs of worsening malnutrition among Gazan children »
Posted By dissent 7 months, 2 weeks ago in NewsRising poverty, unemployment and food insecurity in Gaza, compounded by the recent 23-day Israeli offensive, have increased the threat of child malnutrition, say UN agencies, health ministry officials and healthcare NGOs in Gaza.
UN World Health Organization (WHO) officials are concerned by the warning signs, including rising malnutrition indicators - like increased cases of stunting, wasting and underweight children - and continuing high rates of anaemia among children and pregnant women.

This is the Palestinians' and Hamas's fault. If they decided to make peace rather than try to annihilate Israel, they would have all they needed. Hamas should also not steal the donations from other countries like blankets and food. there is no excuse except the Palestinians and Hamas!!

i know you don't, but i believe -- as does much of the world, except for a minority who insist that israel can do no wrong even in the face of overwhelming evidence -- that israel's blockade may just have something to do with it. go figure

If muslims wanted palestinians to live decently they would send aid across the border with Egypt. Arabs don't want palestinians to live decent lives. Arabs want palestinians to kill Israelis and know that the more misery they keep the palestinians in the more will become suicide bombers.

the border between egypt and gaza is closed. only one truck has been permitted to pass through since israel ceased its massacre. just now it has been opened to allow humanitarian aid in. but only for two days. the only alternative for the gazans are the tunnels which israel bombs daily

if you are saying that egyptians don't want to help the palestinians, you are wrong. support on every arab street is strong. the egyptian government is another matter. it thinks it better not to incur the ire and wrath of israel and its imperial patron -- us. it's lost such wars before. if you are saying that other arab countries should help the palestinians, you are well aware that they do. you also know that we call them terrorists
but your points detract from and fail to address the key point which is israel's criminal blockade of gaza

Well engineer, interesting how your religious racism makes you an accomplice to totalitarian crimes against humanity. Perhaps you should give up zionism and become a jew.

The History and"Morals"of Ethnic Cleansing in Palestine
I arrived in Israel 40 years ago. It took me many years to understand that the very existence of my country, as it is today, is based on an ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. The project started many years ago. Its seed can be traced to the basic fallacy of the Zionist movement, which set out to establish a Jewish-national state in a location already inhabited by another nation. Under these conditions, one has, at most, a moral right to strive for a bi-national state; establishing a national state implies, more or less by definition, ethnic cleansing of the previous inhabitants....
Among the common mantras provided to the Israelis to justify the above is the following:...
But the main mantra drummed into the conscience of an Israeli citizen from kindergarten, is that in 1948 "it was either them or us", "Arabs would have thrown us into the sea if we did not establish a Jewish majority state with a strong army", etc..... I together with most of my compatriots believed for years that 1967 was in fact a moment of existential danger for Israel. Until I stumbled upon some telling quotes, uttered by our very own leaders [4]: ....
Believe me, these Jewish-Israeli mainstreamers are not natural-born monsters. They just do not know any better. Alas, I used to be one of them. Then one day I stumbled, more or less by chance, into the West Bank with a group of activists. I acquired some Palestinian friends and finally understood the criminality of the treatment of the Palestinians by my country. And I learned to ignore the daily portion of preposterous propaganda which is provided to my compatriots by the media in lieu of "news"....
...For the sake of both nations living in this country, this outrage must be stopped. It must be stopped by pressure from outside, because at present within Israel there are no significant political forces to oppose it. Please do something, my friends, and do it urgently. And kindly ignore the endless "negotiations" between our government and the powerless Palestinian Authority, they are just a cover for more ethnic cleansing. If you do not believe me, come and see the massive settlement construction in East Jerusalem and West Bank. And the walls of the Palestinian ghettos.

Israel's Blockade of Gaza - Ethnic cleansing by Starvation
The latest tightening of Israel’s chokehold on Gaza – ending all supplies into the Strip for more than a week – has produced immediate and shocking consequences for Gaza’s 1.5 million inhabitants.
The refusal to allow in fuel has forced the shutting down of Gaza’s only power station, creating a blackout that pushed Palestinians bearing candles on to the streets in protest last week. A water and sanitation crisis are expected to follow.
And on Thursday, the United Nations announced it had run out of the food essentials it supplies to 750,000 desperately needy Gazans. “This has become a blockade against the United Nations itself,” a spokesman said.
In a further blow, Israel’s large Bank Hapoalim said it would refuse all transactions with Gaza by the end of the month, effectively imposing a financial blockade on an economy dependent on the Israeli shekel. Other banks are planning to follow suit, forced into a corner by Israel’s declaration in Sept 2007 of Gaza as an “enemy entity”.
There are likely to be few witnesses to Gaza’s descent into a dark and hungry winter. In the past week, all journalists were refused access to Gaza, as were a group of senior European diplomats. Days earlier, dozens of academics and doctors due to attend a conference to assess the damage done to Gazans’ mental health were also turned back....
... In truth, however, the growing catastrophe being unleashed on Gaza is only indirectly related to Hamas’s rise to power and the rocket attacks.
Of more concern to Israel is what each of these developments represents: a refusal on the part of Gazans to abandon their resistance to Israel’s continuing occupation. Both provide Israel with a pretext for casting aside the protections offered to Gaza’s civilians under international law to make them submit.
With embarrassing timing, the Israeli media revealed at the weekend that one of the first acts of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas prime minister elected in 2006, was to send a message to the Bush White House offering a long-term truce in return for an end to Israeli occupation. His offer was not even acknowledged....
In fact, Israel’s desire to seal off Gaza and terrorise its civilian population predates even Hamas’s election victory. It can be dated to Ariel Sharon’s disengagement of summer 2005, when Fatah’s rule of the PA was unchallenged...

The liar is you, and you and we know it. Let the Gazans make peace. That's all it takes. But, that would take an intelligent person to understand that fact. The Gazans seem to have plenty of people just like you Hyperbola who just don't have that necessary intelligence to see what is needed to improve their situation. Continue with the lies, deceit, hate Hyperbola, and nothing is going to change. Just simple peace will make all of the difference, but no one in Gaza seems even remotely willing to try that simple gesture. What fools.

Has anyone heard of the plight of our fellow American,
Tristan Anderson, on the news? Has the news mentioned that
Israel refuses to cooperate with the U.N. investigation on
the type of warfare used in Gaza? Have they EVEN covered the
testimony of soldiers in the IDF about what took place in
Gaza? If it is not complimentary.........it will NOT be
heard on our American airwaves!
Is any other nation - including the U.S. - granted such
secrecy? Not that I know of - and my question is......WHY??-

Yes, mental illness is a disease. It would seem to us all that the only place where truth about our military empire and corrupt oligarchies can be found is from Hyperbola. Of course, she has the fastest Google as well.

AntiUP, I'm continually amazed that you believe everything that you read online. I have a suggestion for you. Go over to the Gaza Strip and get the truth for yourself. I'm sure that you will have about 10 minutes time to collect your information before you're found dead in some street. Then at least, you will have the truth, although you won't be able to relay that truth to anybody. I would also suggest that you talk to the IDF soldiers that the news claims made those allegations. I think that you might find a very different story if you speak to the horse's mouth. News reporting today has lost all credibility. The Walter Cronkites and Dan Rathers don't exist anymore. Believe what you want. The first amendment gives you the right to be stupid as well as misinformed.

I believe that is EXACTLY what people like Thom Hurndall and Tristan Anderson

The real truth of the matter is you can always find a more honest discussion

Exactly who are they imprisoned? The wall was built to keep the Gazans out of Israel, plain and simple. Israel is under no obligation to let one person from Gaza set one foot on Israeli soil. Every country in the world protects it's borders and restricts movement from non citizens across their borders. Israel doesn't have to let anything cross into Gaza across Israeli territory. There is absolutely no international law which requires Israel to do anything for Gaza. Israel left Gaza and Gaza has it's own government. It is up to that government to provide for it's people. Maybe making peace would be the proper step to take to provide a corridor through Israel by which goods and people can travel. But, as long as Hamas is irresponsible as a government and holds to it's covenant of destroying Israel, Israel has no obligation to let anything pass into Gaza through Israel. Sovereign countries have the sovereign right to control their borders and what crosses those borders. Now, grow up and accept the fact that until the Palestinians make peace, they make their own bed.

fact: israel has complete control over what goes in or out of gaza, under or over gaza. whether it be by land, sea or air. yes, even gaza's airspace belongs to israel's f16s and apache helicopters.
knowing this, all the usual pro-israel talking points that you rehash repeatedly amount to absolutely nothing if not absolute nonsense. it's a whitewash. so please, cut the crap
israel is doing a great deal for gaza. it is starving it to death. and going to great lengths to achieve it, including another berlin-style wall built at enormous expense.
this is not israel protecting itself. this is genocide.

if you think each side must pull ITSELF up...... then how about we stop our pandering and mollycoddling of israel and let it stand on its own feet?

here's where we start....
the cessation of $3 billion/year in "aid" - 70% of our foreign aid - to israel that then spends that $3 billion/year on our military hardware. israel is a first world country. it can do just fine without the largest slice of our handout pie. i've had pro-israelers here scoff at that $3 billion is if it were chump change
the cessation of $30 billion worth of free military hardware. latest installment having arrived only 2 weeks ago while gaza starves. a consequence of israel's direct from the dark ages medieval siege. israel is one of the world's largest military hardware producers. they need our donations...... for what?
the cessation of our vetoes on all un resolutions and sanctions against israel thus consistently undermining the democratic authority of the un. israel screams victim then brags about how tough they are. easy to say with us in the way. let them come out from behind and fight their own fights without all the handouts, freebies and loaded dice we roll for them.
how's that for starters?

"Israel turns back Libyan ship bound for Gaza with aid
By Reuters
The Israel Navy on Monday turned away a Libyan ship heading to Gaza with 3,000 tons of humanitarian aid, ending the most high-profile effort yet to break a blockade of the Hamas-ruled territory.
The Al Marwa was approaching the Gaza coast when it was stopped by an Israel Navy vessel. The navy vessel ordered the Libyan ship via radio contact to turn back, said Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor, adding that no force was used.
In Gaza's small port, spectators, journalists and dozens of porters had assembled to await the arrival of the Libyan ship.
It was not immediately clear where the Libyan ship was now headed. If unable to unload the cargo in Gaza, the ship would return to Libya, said a senior Libyan government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the ship's journey with the press.
"The Israeli warships are making it difficult for the ship to reach the Gaza coast, in spite of the fact that this is a civilian ship, sent to help Palestinians during the siege," the official said.
