The first $136 million from the hotelier Leona Helmsley’s disputed multibillion-dollar estate has been distributed, trustees announced on Tuesday, but the bulk went to medical centers instead of dogs.

Only $1 million of the estate, valued at about $5 billion, was donated to the care of dogs, which Mrs. Helmsley had designated as her primary beneficiary.

“This is a trifling and embarrassingly small amount,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States. “Mrs. Helmsley’s wishes are clearly being subverted.”

Well I plan on living longer than my dogs. But if they don't mind real good , their outta the will. I'd hate to play favorites but the donkey will probably get to live on the property for the rest of her life. the heifer, hum?, That will be according how broke and hungry I get.

This story veers to the surreal in about a paragraph and stays there. What exactly would the dog do with $2mm that s/he couldn't do with $1mm? Bizarre. And the dog has a security detail? Hrm.

I don't think i agree with that decision, if she wanted her estate to go to the animals, her wishes should have been honored!
That said, it's sad that she would overlook so many other decent charities, but it was her money!

I think the trustees are doing the right thing, I think the animal groups should be grateful they are getting any thing. since the trustees are family members and close friends IMHO they have acted responsibly.

          Peace

I love my dog "personally" as much as I love any person. She's snoring on the couch next to me right and my gf's little black beast is on the other side.
But would I leave her money in my will??
            NO WAY!
I know she'd be taken care of by someone else who loves her and that is far the best thing that can happen to her. If she goes first that will be another story but there'll be no mink-lined coffin though I suspect copious tears and many sad awakenings.
But I suppose the instincts of the Helmsleys and Trumps and other such bloated maggots feeding on the rotting carcass of capitalism don't allow any other perspective of the Universe.
For some reason I just thought of the stinking conclusion of Kusturice's "Black Cat, White Cat"..
