I was on Highway 1 in North Vietnam on vacation in 2003. Every year they lose part of this road during the monsoon season to landslides but it is so vital to the region, it gets rebuilt very quickly. We were in a Toyota Land Cruiser headed into the highlands near the border with China climbing higher and higher into the mountains as the temperature dropped. I can remember after a few harrowing hours with the hair pin turns, muddy and rutted roads and some questionable retaining walls, I had a cigarette with the driver after we stopped and I don't smoke! It was just to calm the nerves. But it was worth it. Beautiful country and beautiful people. I'd go back in a heart beat.
