ABC News/ Washington Post Poll: 50% Feel Country Is Headed In Right Direction, 69% Overall Approval »
Posted By TimALoftis 8 months ago in Political NewsAnother Day...another poll. This one from ABC News and the Washington Post.
Barack Obama approaches the 100-day mark with rising economic hopes, the best job approval rating at this point in 20 years, the broadest personal popularity since Ronald Reagan and half of Americans now saying the country's headed in the right direction.
His problem: The other half don't.
For all he and his supporters have to celebrate, overcoming political divisions -- an Obama pledge -- is not among them. His 69 percent job approval rating in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll is almost exactly the average for an elected president at 100 days in polls back to Dwight Eisenhower. But it belies a more modern partisan gap: Ninety-three percent of Democrats approve. Only 36 percent of Republicans agree.
There's a similar split in the sense that the nation's heading in the right direction. It's soared from 19 percent just before Obama's inauguration to 50 percent today -- a stunning advance to its highest in six years. But while right-track ratings have gained 50 points since January among Democrats, they're up by a far milder 9 points among Republicans.

With the President reaching the 100 day milestone this week, we are see a slew of polls from all media organizations. Look for polling from CNN, NBC/Wall Street Journal, CBS, and Newsweek over the next few days.
Reply
The average of all polling taken this past week (6 polls) has the President's approval numbers at 63%, which is up 2 percentage points from earlier in the month.-

Careful readers know that I have been at a loss to explain the popularity of The Modern Republican Movement - given the Moral Vacancy that is apparent in much of that Ideology.
Reply
Plus, the followers and supporters of that Ideology - at least on Propeller - have no real ability to ideate support for this Ideology ... other than petty frustration and overt hostility & insult.
In fact, one supporter of Modern Right Wing Ideology was so enamored of, and defensive of - Torture - that he proferred a desire to Torture all those who disagreed with him.
Such is the depravity that is an outgrowth of those who fall victim to the siren call of hardline, narrow-minded intolerance, and privilege for the privileged ... that is at the heart of Modern Republicanism.
As far as this poll ... I think this reveals that TRUTH is fundamental to all of us.
The Truth is that ... an evil disregard of Moral Justice and Rational Thought ... wrapped in a cloak of Audaciously Moral Hypocrisy ... will ALWAYS resonate with humanity ... regardless of race, creed, or mental acuity.
I believe the exit of the George W. Bush Administration was the closing curtain for policies that led to Welfare for the Wealthy, Keeping Children from access to Health Care, and Torture ... ... ... just a few select Moral Depravities ... ... ... from among a palette of mostly black hues that the right has used to paint our nation.
.
And calling yourself a 'Christian Conservative' ... does NOT make the embraced Ideology any more ... 'blessed'.

The cancer which festers in the Republican party is their unsustainable philosophy, which, though never explicitly stated, is dedicated to keeping the rich white man at the top of the food chain. Its a defense of the status quo. Theirs is a static view of America that is both Christian and male dominated. They believe that America's success and greatness are an expression of these two forces alone. The Johnny come latelies, the successes of other groups such as women and minorities are ascribed to the artifice of affirmative action and political correctness. These are regarded as a threat to the established order not grounded in merit but in social activism. If you don't believe me, just get a conservative drunk and they will give you their unvarnished opinion. I am not suggesting that they all feel this way, but its a big part of their constituency and it depends upon the marginalization of a demographic which is growing in size and power. If Republicans don't learn how to become more inclusive, they will find themselves more irrelevant.

What I don't understand is where are people like Chuck Hagel, Tom Davis, and Colin Powell to counter these embarrassing people like Palin, Jindal, Steele, Bachman, etc? Hell, I'd even take Condi. Can't they *do* something to rescue the party or are they also afraid of being blackballed by FOX?

Sure, let's all just go back home (if we still have one) and to work on Monday (if we still have one and continue to deny the existence of a problem.. The right wing can spin this however they want, but the numbers don't lie. President Obama is extremely popular.
Reply
Social conservatives will never like him because they really believe he he embraces all the social issues (ie: abortion, homosexuality) they have been crusading against for 30-40 years. But the vast majority of Americans are pro-choice and many more are supportive of gay rights....much to the chagrin and apocalyptic horror of this group.
Economic Conservatives don't like him because they really believe that restrictions on free markets will inhibit their ability to make more and more money. They don't care that laissez-faire economic principles are what got our economy in the state it is in today. Even so, the Republican Party should embrace their core principles of low taxes and limited government and have a REAL debate. But instead, they come out with a budget with no numbers and the only solution for economic recovery is more tax cuts for the wealthiest among us. President Obama will be raising taxes on those making over 250,000 a year - to Clintonian levels (which worked well, BTW) - and for that, he's called a socialist. Of course, the media machine - which THEY OWN (and let's be honest folks: between Lou Dobbs and FOX News, the message gets manipulated pretty well) - creates this faux populist anger over taxes which most of the average people will never realize in their own lives. The vast majority of us - those of us making under 250,000 (and yes, that also includes the majority of us who make more than 30,000 but less than 250,000) are receiving a tax cut, but NONE of that gets through...instead, they manipulate people who are uneducated in the complexities of the issues and emotions over the war on terror in hopes of organizing the Republican Party around those cells of anger. These economic conservatives are using mouthpieces like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glen Beck to stir up the stupid among us because THEY REALLY HAVE NO PLAN, OTHER THAN MORE TAX CUTS.

And we liberals (and fair minded independents, to be sure) are frustrated over the issue of torture. We believe the United States is obligated to the Geneva Conventions, that we have been violating laws we helped create These laws - all based on the the core principle of habeas corpus and the Magna Carta - are are part of the bedrock of American and western society. We believe these principles. Period. Still, most of us are willing to let Justice department work through these issues and - hopefully - bring those responsible to justice. We WILL speak up loudly on these issues.
Liberals (and fair minded independents, to be sure) are firmly behind the idea of universal health care because we realize that is needed. And as a person of faith, I have to say that we are a "WE" society, not a "ME" society ....and that no one - no matter who they are - should have to go hungry, or live without shelter, or be denied basic health care. These things are essential for Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness (and if kooks like Glen Beck ever actually read the Rights of Man by Thomas Paine, they'd realize these core principles....Paine was a flaming LIBERAL!). I cast my vote always looking at the basic tenets of social justice and civil rights. And I feel if that makes me a liberal (or even a socialist) in the minds of these kooks, so be it! I can look in the mirror with a clear conscience...
One thing is certain: we have a president who is extremely popular....and it's driving the nutballs crazy!
Good.-

At this point I believe the polarization of our country is at it's peak, more so than in the previous 8 years - but it is a polarization between sense & nonsense, & the reactionaries better come to their senses before this becomes a one party nation- not that the route the Democrats have taken is wrong - it is the correct one as of now, I'd prefer to fly in a plane with a copilot who is sane.

They are so frustrated at being foiled in their near Religious Zeal to turn America into a Pinochet-style Militarist/Corporatist Society ... with strict social codes rigorously enforced ... ala the Taliban.
Let me point this out to you specifically lloydm65 ... I recognize you ... I've met and talked to you throughout my life ... your bitter self loathing has seamlessly translated into a Hatred of Democracy.
You most likely don't even remember when it was that you started to hate America.
Fortunately ... your type is in decline.
Of course, this fact will only serve to further your frustrations ... and anger towards our nation.

Amazing that this submission is about Obama's popularity, and yet the liberals spend their discussion time on the opposing party.
Libs must not have many things to brag about that, so they have to talk about the cons most of the time.-

--It's because you're extremely short-sighted and partisan to a fault, Klarissa. Just because most Americans think the GOP is blocking their agenda doesn't mean we want to eliminate all checks and balances. We need at least one other party to keep the other one honest and to speak out on behalf of those they represent .

You are confusing the ABC/Washington Post poll with a separate (non scientific) poll that AOL is currently running. The two are not related.
Reply
In most AOL polling prior to the election, the AOL community favored John McCain 60 to 40% consistently throughout the fall of 2008. In the primaries, AOL non scientific polling also showed the community favoring Hillary Clinton quite heavily over Obama which we also know was not accurate. -

We had a heated argument this morning at a food store parking lot.A democrat said he knew some people who founds jobs last week pertaining to the stimulus package.when several called him a liar, and ask for the source of these jobs. I believe it's going to get tacky before any jobs come on line.I'm retired, and I watch all the news ,and business channels I haven't seen ,or heard of a single job.The unemployment funds are being depleted at a unsustainable rate. The time to tell the banks, and wall street,Whoa, and kings X and tick a lock all the way around.Even the illegals believe Obama is jerking our chains,I've heard of lovers that couldn't see anything but wine, and roses.I think it goes deeper than that with Obamiacs,it's more orgasmic like slobbering at the mouth,or caressing the love in their legs to increase the the ecstasy of their climax

My Fellow Americans: Thrust me, the Liberals believe what they want to believe. Unemployment at it's highest ever, U.S. can't sell new cars, people losing their houses at an unprecedented rate, tax payers covering the health care needs of every American including the illegal aliens, more homeless than ever in history, open borders attracting a new swine flu threat, banks folding up at an unusual rate, on and on and on. The polls of ABC or whatever have about as much accuracy as the weather reports. Polls taken of the normal Liberal population not the ones who vote and pay taxes. 100 days and they keep taking polls to convince who the ones who voted for the American Dictator President. Well, just wait and see in the next 100 days which should be enough time for impeachment.

My Fellow Americans: Really, who cares? You don't want to get a tear gas round in your chest, don't be there. However, along come all the lunatics horning in on something they know nothing about, trying to interject a moral meaning to another countries unrest. Mind your own business and concentrate on what is happening to the moral fabric of the world in general. It seems that the Muslim conspirators have their fingers in ever upheaval and disaster that is occurring everywhere in the world. Yet, we have people who claim to be religious spouting all this Media negativity about every single incident which has no real meaning to their lives. We have people claiming to be Atheist, Agnostic, or whatever setting a bad example to their children with all this anti everything filth. When we lived by our Constitutional guidelines and did not have all these foreign inhabitants with their off the wall ideas we were a more sane and happy country. Lately we have allow criminals, hate mongers, downtrodden subversives, communist, to inflict their so called morality upon our civilization. Then we have the so called, high morality, freaks like the Nazi Pelosi purporting her anti-American agenda and attempting to make it law. We have laws, we have a Constitution, we have a Bill of Rights, we have real Americans. We just don't have a group of Government representatives, that we voted in, to exercise and protect our original rights. "God Given Rights". Americans must come first before we can worry about solving the World problems. The Real American
