"White House photo op sparks panic
Thousands relive the dread of Sept. 11 as a passenger jet flies low over the Hudson River
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
BY TED SHERMAN AND LESLIE KWOH
Star-Ledger Staff
It was a secret mission, set up by the Department of Defense and coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration.
Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the region were notified last week, with the strict warning not to share the information with anyone but those "with a need to know."
Yesterday, the carefully choreographed flight of the presidential aircraft, accompanied by a single Air Force F-16, set off a panic on both sides of New York Harbor, as thousands of workers -- still haunted by the memories of 9/11 -- fled their high-rise office buildings at the unexpected sight of the huge, low-flying passenger jet over the Hudson River. Trailed closely by a military fighter, the plane could be seen turning tightly over the Statue of Liberty for what was later described as a "photo op."
An Obama administration official told the Associated Press late yesterday the flyover was done because the White House Military Office wanted to update its file photo of the president's plane near the Statue of Liberty.
The official said the military office told the FAA it periodically updates file photos of Air Force One near national landmarks, like the statue in New York harbor and the Grand Canyon. " -

An FAA spokesman said the flyover "was approved and coordinated with everyone," with notifications made to the New York City Police Department, the mayor's office, the New Jersey State Police, and other agencies.

However, a confidential security memo that went out last week by the FAA's Air Traffic System Operations Security office -- while acknowledging "the possibility of public concern regarding Department of Defense aircraft flying at low levels," instructed that all information about the flight be kept confidential, and not to be released to the public or media.
"The information in this document is considered FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY, and should only be shared with persons with a need to know," the memo declared. -

The airforce one plane costs least $60,000 and hour, plus the jets.
A lot of money for photo ops for Obama.
But he is more interested in publicity and traveling that tending to government business, like making appointments to the approx 100 vacant positions. -

My concern is that it has been reported that the feds informed the state and local government well before the flyover and they elected to not inform the public. If, and I say if, that is true, then my opinion is that the state and local governments have much explaining to do.

The rationale for the flyover may need looking into. The air space shouldn't be considered off-limits any more than any other city, especially for radar testing, response, etc... Doing a flyover should always require informing the local and state governments. The local and state governments have the responsibility of informing the citizens. If this was Hollywood doing the flyover, there wouldn't have been any ruckus. There is a need to determine if the feds did inform the state and locals, then it would be time to cast the eye upon those that did not perform adequately.

How typical. NeoCon lies by omission.

You forgot the part where Obama was outraged by this action when he learned about it. Your article continuously tries (as you to) to pretend Obmama not only knew about it, but was in the plane (both of these things being untrue).
No wonder you lost. No wonder you're going to lose again. The American public isn't that stupid. -

You Neoclowns are pathetic.
Under Bush if a democrat said what time a solider may or may not have wiped his ass, you'd scream about how they put the whole nation at risk, but someone tries to protect a presidential airplane and military jet and it's suddenly a coverup?
Jackasses doesn't cover it.

Did Obama's staff never hear of Photoshop?
Reply
Did you know that it costs "only" about $50K AN HOUR to fly Air Force One, and probably close to that for the fighter?
Even if Obama was totally clueless about this, do none of you Obama fans find it even a little disturbing that his appointees on a level that is high enough to deploy Air Force One and a fighter jet didn't have the sense to realize that, even if people HAD been deployed that low-flying jets in and around Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty were bound to cause panic, or at at least severe anxiety?
In my opinion, this is right up there with, if not surpassing Clinton's runway haircut.
Totally insensitive to the constituency. -

What was the point of this flyover, anyway? And if Caldera approved of it, is he the final authority figure, or was he acting at the behest of a higher up?
Reply
Somehow, I expect to find Caldera under the bus, with no further action taken. -

President Barak Obama forgetting something New Yorkers will never do. We still feel the wound. President help reopen that wound.
Reply
How could so talented make such a "bone-headed" mistake? We are New Yorkers, Mr. Obama. Two large passenger jets sliced through our twin towers. Killing all, crew, passengers, rescue personnel and thousands of trapped victims. Get it?
Next time you are ready to do something thrilling make sure the person with the brain joins the contingent. Really...
