Looks like the far-right wing of the Republican party has shot itself in the foot again. Specter is by no means a liberal, but he's not a lunatic obstructionist and actually tries to follow what he thinks is right for his constituents and the nation.

    Also FTA:

In a statement issued about noon as the Capitol was digesting the stunning turn of events, Mr. Specter said he had concluded that his party had moved too far to the right, a fact demonstrated by the migration of 200,000 Pennsylvania Republicans to the Democratic Party.

“I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans,” Mr. Specter said, acknowledging that his decision was certain to disappoint colleagues and supporters.

Once Al Franken is seated, Democrats will have the 60th vote necessary to prevent the Republicans' relentless obstructionism.

Specter does try to pursue what he thinks is right for his constituents and the nation, but I think his primary motivation for switching parties was pure pragmatism in realizing that Pennsylvania, in its growing reluctance to support Republican obstructionism, would not re-elect a Republican Senator. Specter will still follow the beat of his own drum on issues with which he won't toe any party line.

Specter is an idiot, Just look up his involvement into the NFL and spygate. Not to mention his conflict of interest in the cable companies and with the NFL. Democrats just added another corrupt official. Their best bet is to say thanks, but no thanks.
