Supreme Court rules against free speech in broadcasting »
Posted By memestryker 7 months, 1 week ago in NewsWASHINGTON; The Supreme Court ruled narrowly Tuesday in favor of a government policy that threatens broadcasters with fines over the use of even a single curse word on live television, yet stopped short of deciding whether the policy violates the Constitution (although it clearly does). To avoid fines, a station would have to pre-record all material and block all words ruled vulgar.

This case resulted from 2 music awards shows where speakers used the "f" word in unprepared comments. SCOTUS attempted to sidestep the first amendment, but the ruling clearly encroaches on it.

Even small broadcasters operating on shoestring budgets can now be forced to pre-record all material and remove all words deemed vulgar by the FCC to avoid fines.

Ironically the late George Carlin. The FCC won a case giving it the right to regulate indecent speech over the air after a parent was upset over hearing Carlin's infamous 7 dirty words. They did not have a policy so the networks began using Carlin's bit as a guide.

Scalia, joined by his four conservative colleagues, said the FCC "could reasonably conclude that the pervasiveness of foul language, and the coarsening of public entertainment in other media" justified a stricter policy "so as to give conscientious parents a relatively safe haven for their children."

conservatives ..party of PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.. shouldn't those PARENTS monitor what their kids are watching.. and would it not be assumed that a rapper who's songs are bout killing, rape, and degradation of women.. might indeed say FXXK.... -

Kids can listen to endless filth on popular rap or metal songs played over the radio, but say the "f" word on tv and a small station can be irreparably damaged. It just doesn't make sense. What's funny is it's a bunch of religious extremists complaining, and in this case it was Fox, which caters to religious extremists in many cases. OTOH, Ann Coulter can be a real potty mouth and she claims to be a "Christian." So maybe she's just "tempted" a lot because the Lord is testing her...(yeah, I know you have to neg me...I'd probably neg myself for that).

I don't have children. I don't plan on adopting any. Why should I be denied programming that I want to see because some gal couldn't keep her legs closed?

You chose to have children. You monitor what they watch. I think it's funny that someone like Libs who, since the election, is all about "small government, get the government out of our lives" is all about having the government decide what we can watch and what we can't. So it's up to the government to protect your kids from evil swear words on a nighttime television program, but not to help you when you lose your job.
Right?
