The reason for the big difference in sentences was because the people affected by the crack pushers asked for something to be doe about the epidemic of crack users. The increase in sentences took a lot of the pushers off of the streets for a longer time and had people taking second thoughts about this deadly drug. 1 use and the person is addicted. This drug is more devastating than the rest.
