Both. lol. And people who oppose a bill against "hate crimes" must be the ones who perpetrate or condone hate whether in the form of violence or acceptance that it's okay to treat certain people differently if they're not like you.-

The Republicans on the whole have become hate filled stupid idiots. To listen to the incredible rhetoric and talking points from them makes anyone with any intelligence or sensibilities cringe.
It's time to derail the Republican party for good. Their ranks are filled with far right wing religious nuts given us by the so-called moral majority starting with Reagan.

I beg to disagree. We already have laws against any violence. We do NOT need new constraints on freedom of speech defined by the government.

Virginia Foxx is without a doubt one of the FILTHIEST right wing hookers on the planet. The far right wing of the GOP sends disgusting female dogs like her, Bachman and Palin onto the floor to do their slimy bidding because they think having females say some of the reprehensible things they say immunizes them somehow. These sick creatures aren't women. They're thoroughly repulsive wh*res. Foxx is a hideous disease that needs to be cured. She absolutely should resign. Immediately. ;-(

First Read that. Then think about yourself. Just because your gay doesn't mean your not filled with hate. Fox is just saying that you use any Gay person in the News to justify your hatred toward people who don't believe in what you say. Perez Hilton. Gay. ******. Calls a girl a DUmb Biatch because she doesn't agree with him. THat's hate. You didn't say anything about that MEso.
Look at the Gay parade is San FranSIKO. The Gay's went into the Churches and desecrated statues of the Virgin Mary and throwing shiat in the churches and while wearing leather sex wear. Did YOU SAY ANYTHING?
I'm tired of watching the Gays blame everyone else for hate while they impose their hate on everyone who doesn't believe in their views. You are the true bigots. Stop using people to push your agenda. You remind me of how the Iranians use the Palestinians to get hatred for the Jews. Disgusting!!! -

The US, Israel and Racism: Face to face with history
http://www.propeller.com/story/2009/04/30/the-us-i...
The UN conference on racism confronted western countries with difficult truths – but that’s no reason for anyone to walk out.
Only one international body can lay claim to a semblance of democracy: the United Nations. All the other organisations that regard themselves as global – the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organisation – are creations of the west and their power structures reflect that fact. This is the reason why the United States has always had a troubled relationship with the UN; it is the one organisation where it is not assured of getting its own way. On the contrary, it often finds itself hugely outnumbered, resolutions on the Middle East and Israel being a classic trigger. That, rather than being strapped for cash, is why the US has always been so reluctant to pay its dues. So, it was no surprise to find the US boycotting this year’s UN World Conference against Racism in Geneva...
The flashpoint at this conference – and, indeed, the previous one – has been Israel and its attitude towards the Palestinians. Given that Israel has been central to US foreign policy in a region that has been its greatest priority, it was entirely predictable that the Americans would seek to prevent criticism of either themselves or the Israelis.
In fact, the Israelis offer a sad example of the intractable and ubiquitous nature of racism. After the horrific suffering of the Jews during the Holocaust, the west sought to salve its conscience by taking land from the Palestinians, in an area that had been colonised by the European powers, and using it to help establish the Zionist state of Israel. The latter has, unfortunately, always borne many of the characteristics of a transplant, and was bitterly resented by those whose land was stolen. At the same time, Israel identified itself with the west, to which it looked for sustenance and protection, never seeking to establish a modus vivendi with its neighbours.
.... The way many Arabs in Israel are treated as second-class citizens, and the brutality and cruelty shown during the Israeli assault on Gaza early this year, are eloquent testimony to the racism endemic in Israel. It is ironic that a people who suffered from racism on such an enormous scale should themselves display the same kind of attitude towards the Palestinians and their neighbours. It suggests that people do not necessarily learn from their history; and that those who have suffered so grievously may themselves even be particularly vulnerable to the same way of thinking as a result of their experiences.

You will never squash hate by passing a bill. You will never squash hate crimes against the homosexual community by naming a bill the "Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007."
Reply
Ms. Foxx, you will never make your point either by trying to say "It wasn't because he was gay" and then further adding "it's really a hoax that that continues to be used." It was uncalled for and you should apologize.-

"squashing" hate crimes isn't really the point. we can argue about criminal justice theories like deterrence vs retribution, etc. till the cows come home. take domestic violence laws for instance. there are a number of studies that show that tougher domestic violence laws don't deter incidents of domestic violence. does this mean we shouldn't have them on the books? no, because in order to enforce the rule of law and set certain non-negotiable moral standards, we must pass laws against people violating the rights of others and then enforce them when they are broken. similarly, it doesn't matter -- in my view -- whether hate crimes laws are ultimately proven to "deter" hate crimes, what matters is that we make the conduct illegal and enforce the law when the law is broken.

Virginia Foxx, Republican of North Carolina’s 5th District, speaking on the House floor on 4/29/09, falsely claimed that murder victim Matthew Shepard was a killed while committing a robbery!

I’m sure she’s getting quite a few calls today. If PEOPLE REALLY WANT TO GET HER ATTENTION, I might suggest waiting one week or so (until it might seem the furor has died down), and then calling any or all of her offices. Put it on your calendar. Better yet, call every Tuesday (or whichever day of the week you choose) for the next three months!
It seems she really should be asked what prompted her to falsely accuse a dead man of robbery. It is possible that the dead man’s mother was in the House gallery to hear Fox’s vicious speech.
She has several office numbers:
Washington, DC: 1-202-225-2071
North Carolina (Greensboro area): 1-336-778-0211
North Carolina (Charlotte area): 1-828-265-0240
TOLL FREE!!!: 1-866-677-8968 (Option to leave message or hold for receptionist.)
Campaign office: 1-877-253-0861 (Also a TOLL-FREE number, but a machine answers for now... could be a great number to have if she runs again in 2010! Mark your calendars!)
Please spread this information. If any phone number gets disconnected, please remove it before re-posting. -

Aside from the ill-advised comments she makes, I'm on the side of not needing this law. I think if you are going to pursue equality, you have to do it in all aspects. If one law definition is good for marriage for all individuals without consideration of race, gender, religion, sexual preference, etc..., then one law is good for defining murder or other crimes and legal definitions.
Reply
If you wants special privileges/consideration or to be considered *different* in one area, it is fair for that judgment to be used in all areas. That creates exclusivity vs. equality. I do not buy into the idea of separate but equal for anything. As goes marriage, so should go murder. It is what it is, without consideration of who was murdered.
That, in no way, excuses the comments made by the congresswoman. To cheapen anyone's death is a terrible thing to do and considering her alleged leadership role in this country, indicates that maybe her place as a representative of this country should be questioned.-

Reply
--You're very articulate. I don't agree with a lot of what you say but your arguments are decent. The main problem I see with your argument is that as written, marriage laws don't explicitly discriminate against gay people (which is why we have silly things like prop 8). In contrast, we already have laws on the books that single out some of the other "isms" but *not* sexual orientation. So, in that regard, it's not equal treatment under the law.
"If you wants special privileges/consideration or to be considered *different* in one area, it is fair for that judgment to be used in all areas."
--They already do. More importantly, as applied, sexual orientation hate crimes legislation doesn't single out gay people for protection. It singles out *bigotry* towards anyone (whether that person happens to be gay or not) rooted in hatred towards gay people. There is no exclusivity. The law adds a special protection for anti-gay bigotry (to the long list of already protected groups) and it's inclusive of everyone, straight or gay.

--At least you're addressing the subject of the thread. You obviously don't have all the facts associated with this incident, tangy. Otherwise you wouldn't try to draw comparisons between these two things. If you think they're comparable, at least say why. People say offensive things in Congress every 5 seconds. This story is about an elected official's anti-gay rhetoric and it's about Foxx virtually spitting in the face of Ryan White's mother who was there to hear every word that came out of this vile woman's mouth. So please explain how these two incidents are comparable --if you insist on dredging up some random incident that got your goat.

When white juries would not convict crimes by whites against blacks in the south (prime example, Emmet Till & the Miss. 3 )
Reply
congress passed laws against violations of civil rights with penalties as stiff as the ones for the crimes unconvicted
When organized crime was thumbing it's nose at justice, congress passed the RICO act with stiff penalties.
When people are violated & killed simply for who they are, congress must do the same as it has in the previous cases. Call it anti-hate laws or whatever you want but it is needed legislation . Wonder if Rep Foxx is a self-hating closet lesbian her vitriol is beyond what is called for.-

Ms. Fox,
Reply
Congresswoman Fox has shown the truth about the old prejudiced South that the congresswoman comes from. I am also from the south. Luckily I was raised by a family that believed all Americans should have all rights granted to one and all. If the south could be represented by most of the people I know it would not be so polarized. Unfortunately we have a long standing mind set represented by the OLD guard of Ms Fox that will end (I hope soon). Ms. Fox is only representing a small percentage of a small group of her loyal patrons that has kept her in a safe secure job. She has no value. -

I will never under stand the conservatives stance on the issue of 'Hate Crimes'
Reply
To hate a person so much that you would go out and kill just because of that person's color, ethnicity, or sexual orientation is so unimaginable for me. It is the low of the low. While killing someone for $20.00 bucks or killing your spouse because you caught he or she sleeping with your best friend is a potential capital crime and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, they are not acts of just pure and downright 'Hate' -
