I also agree that in studying the Bible, it's important to study within the context of the greater whole and within the historical context as well. That's how I came to realize that Paul was specifically writing to Thessalonians who thought Christ was going to return in their lifetime, and Paul was simply trying to comfort them with the explanation that those who had died before Christ's return would certainly not receive any less reward. Of course, it's hard to study the Bible in this way without being a scholar oneself, but it's rewarding to learn as much as we can.
