WASHINGTON — Gay marriage legalization in several states and the public's growing acceptance of same-sex unions have Democrats sensing political opportunity and some Republicans re-evaluating their party's hard-line opposition to an issue that long has rallied its base.

As more states adopt gay-friendly legislation, we will reach a tipping point in the US in which gays and lesbians will have equality throughout the nation. Gays and lesbians will have the same protection under the law for our families and our relationships that heterosexual couples have.

"Also, the GOP has no titular head setting the tone on this or other issues." As stated in this article the GOP is not moving in this direction and the leaders or lack of them is not encouraging change. The GOP seems to be perversely stuck in reverse when it comes to social issues.

Yes, there seems to be some GOP dropping of "hot-button" social issues as wedges by which to rally the faithful against progressive legislation.

Of course, Chaney and Rove continue to pump the fear treadle; but it's rather like Oz just before he's been exposed. The economic situation has helped to focus everyone on which battles are actually important to fight, or count at all.

Though gay people must be ever-vigilant, as homophobia is very much alive and well and dangerous.

The GOP has to distance itself from the Fundamentalist Evangelical church and it's destructive teachings if they hope to survive. They became entwined with these charlatans under Reagan and now the ranks of the GOP are filled with these fanatical right wing bible-thumping, warmongering, gun loving freaks! If they don't clean their own house of these crazy people, their party is doomed.

There is the super left wing and the homosexuals trying to make believe that just because every time it goes up for a vote they lose it means nothing. When someone sues in Iowa for not marrying two of the same sex watch out. Some idiot will and then the anger will force the legislators to run for cover. My wife's family is from there and it is a staunch Bible belt area.

I never thought I'd ever see it anywhere in the U.S. in my lifetime. It's overwhelming, really, to know that I could actually marry my partner if I chose to do so. I'm 48, and I've been fighting for my rights my entire adult life. I could die a happy man today, knowing (that my country is no longer in the hands of a dangerous lunatic and) that we have made such great progress (in spite of forces working against us).

I certainly hope I do see full equality in my lifetime. But I'm also at full acceptance that we may never get there before I die. Too many nutballs are in entrenched power here in the south. They are beholden to the mega-church cults that have sprung up everywhere. So no, I don't ever expect full equality in my lifetime.

            ...and that's too bad.

What amazes me is that the states that are the loudest when opposing gay marriage are also the ones who allow marriage between second cousins.

My Fellow Americans: So who is gonna survive in the end the Gay society or the non Gay society. Very odd a Gay (Man?) acting like a woman and a Gay, (Woman?) acting like a man. How did that occur. Yes, that legislation is passing in most States because Congress People have no intestinal fortitude. (Guts) for the dumb. Go hold your buddies hand and kiss his scratchy beard and leave us normal fun loving people alone. The Real American

I don't care what these perverts do,if they could keep it to themselves.I'm so tired of their moaning, and groaning.I myself will be surprised if PETA doesn't start demanding marriage between animal owners their animals.Maybe they at could at least make male, and female.I think it would be a breath of fresh air.At least I wouldn't be subjected to a well dressed intelligent looking man on TV lamenting I want to be able to marry my husband.Lord come quickly even today.
