Maine is taking the steps necessary to provide equal treatment under the law for gay couples. Neither domestic partnership registries nor civil unions provide the same rights that marriage does. We have argued these points incessantly on here, but gays and lesbians will not back down from this fight. We deserve and demand equal rights.

(("Maine is taking the steps necessary to provide equal treatment under the law for gay couples. Neither domestic partnership registries nor civil unions provide the same rights that marriage does."))

That is what is wrong with this whole movement in a nutshell. Marriage does not provide any rights. The "right" to marry is protected by the constitution as the inherent benefits there of. Being married the benefits and responsibilities are automatic because the two are now one. So you say it is the same in a homosexual "marriage." So a roommate dies and the surviving roommate/friend wants to claim the property and insurance benefits of the deceased. How is that any different from a homosexual relationship? It's a private friendship and if that were to be the desire of the deceased there are numerous solutions to that end and the same solutions are available to homosexual couples without any regard to their relationship.

There is no relevance to support homosexual marriage except to unnecessarily pacify the interest of the involved parties whom like that ridiculous Perez Hilton simply want everyone else to celebrate them when we have no interest whatsoever in them. I will not ever acknowledge a homosexual couple as married no matter what the law does with the issue.

That sir, is the point at which your arguments collapse. Vermont, in September, will begin recognizing same gender marriages beginning September 1 by a law passed by the legislature without a judicial ruling. In Connecticut, the people passed a law allowing for gay marriage, and whether the governor did not like the law or not, she still signed it (to comply with a court order, I admit).

The laws were prevented to keep black people from marrying at all. They were property in the south...lest you forget the whole civil war and the passage of the 13th through 15th Amendments. The rest of your argument is faulty at best, and downright wrong at worst.

You may not like gays or gay marriage, but it is coming, and nothing you do will stop us from fighting for legal recognition.

Kudos to the state of Maine.

I never thought I'd ever see gay marriage anywhere in the U.S. in my lifetime. It's overwhelming, really, to know that I could actually marry my partner if I chose to do so. I'm 48, and I've been fighting for my rights my entire adult life. I could die a happy man today, knowing (that my country is no longer in the hands of a dangerous lunatic and) that we have made such great progress (in spite of forces working against us).

I certainly hope I do see full equality in my lifetime. But I'm also at full acceptance that we may never get there before I die. I hate to be cynical, but there are too many nutballs entrenched power here in the south. They are beholden to the mega-church cults that have sprung up everywhere. So no, I don't ever expect full equality in my lifetime. ....the william-sires of the world will make sure it doesn't happen... ...and that's too bad.
