Why the Faithful Approve of Torture »
Posted By TechnologyExpert 7 months ago in ReligionThe more often you go to church, the more you approve of torture. This is a troubling finding of a new survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life . Shouldn't it be the opposite? After all, who would Jesus torture? Since Jesus wouldn't even let Peter use a sword and defend him from arrest, it would seem that those who follow Jesus would strenuously oppose the violence of torture. But, not so in America today.

Are you equally vehement in your denunciation of torture when it is zionists who are the torturers?

Israel's Torture Ban
...Eitan Fellner, head of the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem, says that "torture became a bureaucratic routine in all Shin Bet interrogation centers. We estimate that 85 percent of Palestinian detainees were tortured, though many were later released without a charge." In other words, there are tens of thousands of Palestinians who made confessions under torture that are now presumably invalid, and who are entitled to redress...
...At the Israeli Justice Department the official in charge of matters affecting Palestinians, and thus a man well trained as an apologist for Israeli security forces, was an American emigre called Justus Reid Weiner. Weiner, now a "scholar in residence" at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, financed by Michael Milken and his family, is the author of a grotesque attack on Edward Said in the latest issue of Commentary. Boyle remembers telling Weiner that Jewish-American professors such as John Fried and Richard Falk were among those raising this question of Nuremberg accountability. "I shall never forget Weiner's response,' Boil recalls. "He said, 'There are large numbers of self-hating Jews living in America. That's why I moved to Israel.' At that point I realized I was wasting my time talking to a fanatical anti-Arab racist, so I terminated the conversation."
Although the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal gave much space to Weiner's slurs, neither would print Said's rebuttal. The Israeli daily Ha'aretz did so on September 8. That same day the Palestine Center for Human Rights in Gaza issued a statement on the Supreme Court's ruling, concluding with its "appreciation of the work of Israeli human rights organizations on this issue." Would that American Jewish groups could have merited such gratitude. Instead of which we find the Zionist Organization of America waving Weiner's attack and demanding that Said be evicted from his presidency of the Modern Language Association!...

Torture: Israel’s expanding export industry

Yuval Ginbar is a scholar and human rights activist, and has recently written a book for us called Why Not Torture Terrorists?: Moral, Practical and Legal Aspects of the “Ticking Bomb” Justification for Torture. In the post below he gives his opinions on the Israeli academics who support the use of torture in the “war on terror” and are seeking its legitimization....
.... Israel has produced a surprising yield of academics who support torture and seek its legitimization, if not legalisation. Publishing widely, including in the most prestigious journals and publishing houses, they advocate the use of interrogational torture in the “war on terror”....
... Israel is not the focus of my book, but of the four “models of legalized torture” described and analysed there, two have, unfortunately, been in operation in Israel, in one form or another. Then there is the “torture warrants” model. The fourth is, of course, the US model....

How Alan Dershowitz Misstates, Misrepresents and Misapplies the Law
As an ultra-Zionist, what he insists is akin to "the law is what I tell you it is! And why can't the World understand that!" While cherry picking, mischaracterizing and misapplying International Law, Professor Dershowitz ignores what every Law School and University teaches on the subject.
Should he spend more time in the Harvard Law School library, and less in TV studios, he would surely learn that an objective application of international legal norms to the conduct of Israel is Gaza would result its leaders being indicted and brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.....

Now waiting for Mut to come in and tell us it doesnt matter how badly Christians act, just as long as they are not quite as bad as the Muslims.-

Of course when the torture was so bad that it had to be exported, it went to the arab countries who rely on such actions as their daily source of amusement.
A video recently smuggled out of the United Arab Emirates shows a member of the country’s royal family torturing a man so cruelly that the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is now under pressure to investigate and take action. The footage, obtained by ABC News, shows Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al Nahyan, brother of the country’s crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed, stuffing sand down the man’s throat, shocking him with an electric cattle prod and, at one point, dousing the man’s testicles in lighter fluid and setting them aflame. The victim—who is held down through much of the video by a man in police uniform—has been identified as Mohammed Shah Poor, who the Sheikh accused of short changing on a grain delivery to his royal ranch on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi. Near the end of the video the victim is shown being run over by the sheikh who is driving an SUV, the sound of bones cracking can be heard.

I think I can answer this question with some degree of authority.

You see, I've been going to church here in Ocala ... and before that ... in Tennessee ... and if there is one thing that is common to every Christian Conservative Church from Ocala Florida to Pocatello Idaho is this ... Christian's are told every Sunday that they are sinners.
After decade upon decade of being told you are a sinner ... that your sins are the reason Jesus died a horrible, painful death ... one feels as though they DESERVE to be tortured.
Of course, this is also why Christian Conservatives are always so angry.
Just look at the typical commentary from those who claim to be Right Wing Christian Conservatives ... usually they are full of insults and obscenities. (libsRfunny and Endoscopy come to mind - although Endo usually refrains from the most egregious obscenities.)
To The Modern American Christian Conservative - Torture is what we all have waiting for us anyway ... getting a little taste of it before hand is like watching a movie trailer ...
It's as if they say ... "What's the big deal?

this is a silly premise G.

maybe its something as simple as faith brings moral certainty.
for the faithless, life is nothing but shades of gray.
i dunno. i'm not a churchgoer.
it rather grates me, though, that the left side of the aisle has no problem picking on the the people that do go to church as retards. with this poll, now you have 'proof' that they ARE retards.
maybe it makes you (the royal you, not G in particular) feel morally superior. -

Why do you think that you are such an authority on Christianity?
You said, "After decade upon decade of being told you are a sinner ... that your sins are the reason Jesus died a horrible, painful death ...one feels as though they DESERVE to be tortured." Just that statement alone proves that you don't know what Christianity is.
If you get the impression that I am upset then you impression is correct. I get very frustrated with people who talk about Christianity when they have no knowledge or understanding of what true Christianity is all about.
And if you would like to get into a serious discussion about the true meaning of Christianity I would be only to happy to converse with you.

"White evangelical Protestants were the church-going group most likely to approve of torture. By contrast, those who are unaffiliated with a religious organization and didn't attend worship were most opposed to torture -- only 42% of those people approved of using torture."

I think it has a lot to do with the preachers or what ever you call the guy that stands in front of the followers (the flock). With the rise of the mega church and the southern baptist convention these leaders are more politically connected and a part of the military industrial complex. They profit from war so they want to keep the wars going. It has nothing to do with Jesus. The flock is following these war mongers to the gates of hell. -

It makes perfect sence that inbred evangelical morons who worship a liberal jew god jesus, who spent all his time advocating for the poor and sick and ranting against the authoritarian government, and then being tortured to death by same authoritarian Cheneylike government, for saying the emperor was not a god....that these hyporcrite cowards and evangelical cons would then hate their same savior jesus, using their mythical jew as a barometer for what to NOT do.
Reply
Evangelical Cons always vote for the rich, vote and practice racism, and not suprising, support torture. Cons: hate america and hate jesus while preaching patriotism and hatred for liberals, liberals like their savior and messaih, baby jesus.-

What a load of crap that woman is spewing. She simply cannot come to grips with the notion that is so clearly demonstrated by this poll: religion is evil and those who adhere to that evil tend to be violent and evil themselves. It's too simple to require a lot of explanation. Deal with it.

My Fellow Americans: Just like their President these people will come up with anything of the top of their pea brain heads. The Faithful approve of Torture? Yes, and the Unfaithful approve of being Tortured. They also approve of fagots, tax cheats, liars, President born in another country, not an American, printing money until they run out of paper, kissing Terrorist butts, bowing down to a Sheik, Sheik, Sheik, a Shake, Shake, Shake, and kissing his booty, believe in making the poorer even poorer, bankrupting banks, taking over business, can't drive a car let alone build one, worshiping Satan, and throwing big parties in the White House with American Tax Payer Money. His followers are low life, Ayers a Terrorist who blew up Police Officers, Gueitner, Tax Cheat and thief, Biden a dunce, Dodd and Frank money jugglers and lovers of each others criminal agenda. Naplitano a useless piece of jello, who tells the American people to watch out for our home coming hero's. So we have figure you low lifes out so go ahead make up some more lies. Rearrange some more honest statements to make them look threatening. You all are about to face a judgement day.

There are "religious people" and there are Christians.
Reply
The religious people believe in "works" as a way of gaining favor with God. They don't know that A) it's impossible B) it's not what is required.
So, these religious folks like to feel "puffed up" in how good they behave. Meanwhile, they are sinners like the rest of us. (Even the Pope is a sinner- don't blame me). They "cling" to their religion and become accusers of other people. Yes.
I gather they eventually see no problem with torturing other "bad" people. They see (wrongly) their judgment as a natural extension of the divine's judgement.
That is what is happening, regardless of what other people claim on this thread. -
